You asked: What are the benefits of foam rolling? We tapped Alex, Fitness Manager at 24 Hour Fitness - San Leandro, CA to answer.

Foam rolling is a simple stretching technique that effectively delivers quick, positive, feel good results. By applying our own bodyweight on the foam roller we allow overactive muscle fibers to stretch, unknot and realign.

The benefits include improved range of motion in joints, correction of muscle imbalances, reduced soreness, improved muscle recovery, and most importantly decreased impact of everyday stress on our body. It’s safe to say a couple rolls a day, may keep the doctor away!

Which is better: free weights or weight machines?

Coach Alex from 24 Hour Fitness - City of Industry, CA says there are benefits to both and breaks it down for us:

For experienced and injury-free individuals, free weights are preferred because they make the body work harder - not only do the primary muscles work to execute the movement, there are secondary muscles that are working hard, as well.

For individuals who have injuries or limited experience with free weights, weight machines offer the ability to easily isolate muscle groups while having the chest or back supported, allowing individuals to strength train safely with good form.

What should you eat before and after your workout?

Coach Amanda from 24 Hour Fitness - Torrance/PV, CA offered this answer: As a general rule, you should feed your body about an hour prior to exercise. Try some Greek yogurt and a banana, oats with peanut butter, or a protein shake with almond milk to get the protein and carbs your body needs to perform at its best!

After exercise, you'll want to replenish your body with protein and carbs as well. Lean meats with a leafy green salad, plant-based protein shakes, or a delicious burrito are all great options.
