Automotive Engineering! 🚙🧑‍💻

🔍 Intern Ian Burpeau spent two weeks with our Automotive Engineering team this summer, diving into Polaris MRZR vehicle sensor data.

✔️His efforts have helped the team optimize lab operations and demonstrated how cadets can innovate with available techs.

✔️Ian also identified ways to improve future sensor data, enhancing lab experiences for CME Auto/Weapons Track cadets.

Dr. Nathaniel Helminiak and Engineering Technicians Mr. Matt Stanton and Mr. Mike Flowers got up close with Army Engineer demolitions training, watched Cadets build and detonate urban breaching charges, and even joined the action! 🔧

This hands-on experience gave our civilian staff a blast of insight into the intense training our Cadets undergo. 💪

Bridging the Gap: commodifying infrastructure spatial dynamics with crowdsourced smartphone data - Communications Engineering Liam Cronin and colleagues develop an end-to-end approach for crowdsourcing vibration data from cell phones in vehicles to extract bridge vibration characteristics known to be sensitive to structural damage.

Dr. Brock Barry and Dr. Talal Salem led practical exercises, field training events, classroom instruction, team-building activities, and reflective sessions over two and a half days while participating in the West Point Civilian-Military Experience (CivMX).

Dr. Brock Barry earned special recognition for his excellence, with the training cadre commending his outstanding attitude, dedication, and leadership.

Last week 9 faculty and 1 newly graduated 2LT from the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering attended the American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. They presented their papers, served as moderators for the various sessions, and networked with other engineering educators to exchange ideas and methods.

To a standing ovation and chants of "U-S-A," the West Point Concrete Canoe Team received the "Spirit of the Competition Award" at the 37th Annual American Society of Civil Engineers Student Concrete Canoe Championships held at Bringham Young University in Provo, Utah.

West Point placed 12th overall in the Nation having taken 8th place in the Technical Presentation and 13th place in the male slalom race. 2LT Abby Gash paddled solo in the women's races, which won accolades from the judges. During the final 4-person coed race, the canoe took on water and submerged requiring the team to swim the canoe 300 meters to the finish line.

The 2024 USMA Concrete Canoe, the Black Widow, is making waves at the 2024 ASCE Civil Engineering Student Championship in Provo, Utah. The team is 1 of 25 schools competing in the national concrete canoe competition. The team was judged on technical proposal, prototype display, prototype demonstration (the races), and will finish out the competition with technical presentations today.
