👣 Guiding Your Birth with Body Positioning: Empowering Choices for Every Stage 🤰🌟

Hello, Spokane parents-to-be! 🤗👶 When it comes to birthing your precious little one, the power of body positioning can't be underestimated. As your doula, I'm here to share insights about how different positions during labor can make a significant difference in your birthing experience. 🌈✨

🧘‍♀️ Active Labor Positions: Movement and flexibility play a vital role during active labor. From standing, walking, swaying, or using a birthing ball, these positions can help encourage progress and reduce discomfort. 🚶‍♀️🤰

🪑 Supported Positions: Leaning on a partner, nurse, or using a squat bar can provide added support and gravity-assisted help during contractions. This can also create more space in the pelvis for baby's descent. 💑👣

🪑 Semi-Reclined Positions: Resting on your side or semi-reclined can be helpful during longer labors, allowing you to relax while still encouraging progress. 🛌😌

🧘‍♀️ Squatting Positions: Squatting can help widen the pelvic outlet and promote the baby's descent. Squat bars, squatting stools, or even a supported squat can aid in this position. 🤸‍♀️🏋️‍♀️

🛁 Water Birth Positions: If you're considering a water birth, being in the water can provide buoyancy and comfort, allowing you to move and change positions more easily. (My personal favorite laboring comfort measure)🛁🌊

🪑 Side-Lying Positions: Side-lying can be beneficial for rest, and it's particularly helpful if you need to labor on your side due to medical reasons. It can also be a comfortable position for some birthing activities. 🌙💤

Each labor is unique, and finding the right positions for you will depend on your comfort and the progression of your birthing journey. As your doula, I'm here to guide you through these options, providing insight, encouragement, and hands-on support to help you find what works best for you. Let's work together to create a positive and empowered birthing experience! 🌟🌷

🌟 Harnessing the Power of Positive Affirmations during Pregnancy and Birth 🌈💕

Hello, Spokane mamas-to-be! As a doula, I've witnessed the incredible impact of positive affirmations on the beautiful journey of pregnancy and birth. 🤰👶✨

Affirmations are more than just words; they are empowering statements that can shape your mindset and transform your birthing experience. By surrounding yourself with positive thoughts, you can build confidence, reduce anxiety, and connect with your inner strength during the time of transition. 🌿🌺

Repeat these affirmations daily, embrace their empowerment, and let them guide you through the waves of labor:

🌟 "I trust my body and the process of birth."
🌟 "Each surge brings me closer to meeting my baby."
🌟 "I am capable, strong, and supported."
🌟 "I release fear and embrace the power within me."
🌟 "My baby is surrounded by love and warmth."
🌟 "I welcome this journey with joy and grace."

As your doula, I'm here to support you every step of the way, offering guidance, reassurance, and a caring presence throughout your pregnancy and birth. Let's welcome this journey together with positivity and confidence! 🤗💫

“Don’t worry! Fed is best anyways!” A doctor at the hospital tells a mother who just birthed her baby who won’t latch.

“Don’t worry, they all grow up to eat chicken nuggets anyways!” Laughs the nurse at a babies 3rd well visit, he isn’t gaining weight the way they want.

“Don’t worry! It hurt me to nurse too so I stopped!” Says a woman to her friend over lunch as she watches her cringe in pain.

“Don’t worry! A bottle will help her sleep through the night.” Says a husband to his wife when the alarm goes off to feed.

“Don’t worry! He’ll never remember you stopped!” Says a coworker to his friend who’s freezer supply is dwindling and she’s struggling to get more then an ounce.

Don’t worry they all said. Fed is best anyways.

She cried for help.
She sobbed in that office.
She called her friend exhausted.
She went to anyone she could.
She begged. She pleaded.

But fed is best anyways.

A phrase we started to help moms know it’s okay if it just simply “doesn’t work out” Is crippling thousands of woman.

Choosing formula over breastfeeding is a choice. Yet the mothers choosing breast are having that choice ripped from them - before they ever stood a chance.

So I encourage you, next time a mom is begging for support, don’t turn to her and say “Well fed is best anyways!”

Ask her what you can do.
Help her read the books.
Help her search on google.
Help her find an IBCLC.
Help her get the help she needs.

The western world has the lowest and shortest breastfeeding terms globally. I’ll let you do the math on why you think that is.

If you are a mother who struggled and had your journey end before you were ready, I stand with you. My heart hurts for you.

Just know there are woman like me, doing everything we can to make sure the next generation doesn’t have to beg and plead for the help they need.

✍🏼: Alysa Evon from Simply Sacred Birth on Facebook

And for those in the thick of it, Remember: Breastfeeding is NOT all or nothing. Every teaspoon of has up to 3,000,000 germ-killing cells in it. You’re doing great 🫶🏽

The Birth of Isabella Rose ✨💓

I wasn’t sure if I was going to share this story sense it was very traumatic and disappointing at first. But, I’ve come to realize that I am processing it and finding a lot of little blessings in my birth story. By sharing it, I hope other moms realize that even though your birth might not have looked the way you wanted it to, there is still so much strength and light in your story!

On the afternoon of Wednesday June 28th my water had broken so I texted my midwife and she said to keep her updated and to let her know when contractions start. So me and Lucas finished getting the house ready for a home birth. I headed to bed to get a good night’s rest until labor started, but my contractions didn’t start that afternoon or night. So, Thursday morning I texted my midwife and she said to take the Labor Cocktail that consisted of Verbena Oil, Apricot Juice, Castor oil, and Almond butter. I took that around 10:30 Thursday morning and then contractions started around 1:30pm.I texted my doula to come over around 5pm that night. I labored that afternoon into the night and my midwife was at another birth so her back up midwife came and checked me. I was dilated to 4cm and she also did a membrane sweep. But, contractions were still spaced out pretty good so they told me to go get some rest with a peanut ball. Contractions were off and on the whole night and I really couldn’t sleep so I started bouncing on my birthing ball around 4am. I let my birth team sleep during this time and really just reflected on my time laboring in my home and spent time alone in prayer. Friday morning I took another labor cocktail and my doula started putting me in different laboring positions to get my contractions to ramp up. We did the cat cow position, flying cowgirl, kneeling with the ball, and so many deep squats. I was having contractions about 3-4 mins apart! Around 1pm my midwife checked me and I was still at 4cm maybe a soft 5. Our midwife advised us at this time that since my water had been broken for over 48hrs that I should transfer out of her care to a hospital but I did not want to do that just yet. So, instead my midwife gave me a preventative antibiotic to keep any infection from happening to me or baby girl. Friday afternoon the contractions had pretty much stalled out, so I took yet another labor cocktail and a labor tincture that was supposed to help bring the contractions on again. We were trying everything to get the contractions to come back! Laboring on the toilet, more squats, curb walking, sifting my belly, all the positions on the birthing ball, using the peanut ball, speed walking up the hill, nothing worked! By Friday night the contractions came back a little bit but they were still spaced out I had taken a bath to help relieve some pain and then we to sleep. Come Saturday morning, there were no contractions at all so we decided to go to the hospital while it wasn’t an emergency and I could still communicate with the doctors on what I wanted.

We loaded up and went to Deaconess Hospital and my midwife had warned me that they might not be happy that it was day 4 of my waters being broken and now transferring but they would be happy that I did have the antibiotic in my system. And, me and baby were perfectly healthy. I made sure that both the baby and I were healthy when I decided to labor at home one more day to try and do the home birth. I was very nervous and honestly felt so defeated walking into the hospital. But, When we got into the room I was very happy with my nurses and doctor, my nurse had been a doula previously for 9 years! My doctor read my birth plan and went over it with me and listened to my concerns and wishes! My doctor said “I know this wasn’t your plan so how can I still make you feel like your in control of your labor” and I just totally loved her gentleness and consideration with me after everything that had happened those 4 days. I told her that I would love to push my baby out in the position that I wanted and that my husband would help deliver our daughter if at all possible and that I wanted to labor as long as possible in the bath and she was totally okay with my wishes. So, we got me started on pitocin to get contractions started again. They started it a 1 and kept going up every 30mins, they only go up to 20 when someone doesn’t have a pain medication and they got me all the way up to 19 out of 20. I was laboring in the bath tub for most of that time from about 2pm to 3am Saturday I labored in the bed, bath tub, the birthing ball, pacing up and down. Around 12am I got out of the water I asked for Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) as a pain killer but all that did was make me light headed. Then I labored more on the birthing ball with so many double hip squeezes. I’m sure Lucas and Natalia’s arms were feeling it by this time! Around 1:30am I asked them to check me to see how much I was dilated because I figured with how strong and fast those contractions were coming I had to be more like 7-8cm by now.

Nope.

They checked me and I was still at a 5. Same as when they checked me Thursday night. I looked at Lucas and apologized. Really I was apologizing to myself though and asked for the epidural. When the anesthesiologist came and did my epidural I was still on 19 out of 20 of pitocin so those contraction were coming hard and fast and I had to get three epidurals because there was something called tissue pockets he kept hitting. And then after getting the epidural everything was numb except for my hip I was feeling all the contraction pain in my hip and then it moved to my butt so they had to give another little bit of the epidural until it finally gave me some relief. So, then everyone went to sleep.

Around 4am I felt pressure like a lot of it and so I asked her if she could check me and sure enough what I had been trying to do for the last 4 days happened in 2 hours I was at 10cm. So, the nurse told me that she’s going to call the doctor and get things ready. But, during that time the pressure got more and more intense and so I told the nurse it feels like the baby is going to come out and she said oh no first time moms normallly push for like 2 hours so we are going to do a practice push, I did one push and she told me to stop and that she could see the head. So, she got everyone up and ready and I pushed five times and she was out. But, then it got a little bit scary because I had been contracting for so many days, my uterus is supposed to clamp down after birth to stop the bleeding but since it was so tired it didn’t. And so they kept the pitocin on to help stop the bleeding and gave me two shots in my legs to clot the bleeding and some medicine in my cheek that had to dissolve. They did get the bleeding under control but I did loose 730ml of blood so I was feeling pretty crappy until they gave me the IV Iron and that gave me a lot more energy.

Overall bringing Isabella Rose into the world was a whirlwind of emotions of sadness, defeat, Joy, laughter, but most of all so much love. My birth team was absolutely amazing to the back up midwife Kayla Duval coming to check me late at night to give me peace of mind, to my midwife Rebekah Alice giving me care all the way up until my labor and then after. To my amazing birth team that didn’t leave my side the entire time Natalia and Lucas were my rocks. They kept my spirits up and reminded me how strong and fearless I was, even when we had to go to the hospital they never made me feel less than. This birth changed me and made me realize on a whole new level how kick-ass women’s bodies really are, we are stronger than we realize!

💛Aromatherapy During Labor💛

“Aromatherapy is a traditional and historical practice of using essential oils from plants in order to enhance well-being.
Ways of using Essential oils during labor could include:

✨Massaged into the skin
✨Given in a warm bath
✨Diffused into the air

You can use essential oils alongside of other medical practices. “It can also be used on it’s own or with other non-drug methods as an alternative during labor to pain medications such as an epidural”.
Essential Oils Especially helpful during Labor

🌿Rose plant-Reduced stress/anxiety, and lower pain
🌿 Salvia-Decreased length of labor
🌿Peppermint-Decreased nausea and vomiting
🌿Geranium-Decreased diastolic blood pressure

“Anxiety, fear and tension are linked to someone’s pain perception. So, often how much pain you perceive is related to how much anxiety you feel”. “On a scale from 0 to 10 with 0 being no pain and 10 being the worst pain possible, pain scores at the end of labor when women were 8 to 10 centimeters dilated averaged 6.7 to 7.9 among women in the aromatherapy group and 9.4 to 9.8 among people receiving the placebo”.

✨BIRTH VISIONS✨
When I imagine my perfect birth someday it would be in a birthing tub either in my own home or a birthing center.
I would like to have a low lighting, soothing vibe in the room where there is no rush for me to get my baby out. I can listen to my body and go with my bodies natural rhythm. I would like to delay cord clamping and leave my baby in what they come out. No bath right away, or medications.(Unless needed of course) I would love to have a moment with my family and skin to skin time with my child. And then transition into breastfeeding.

If you could choose how your birthing experience go or went how would you want it? Drop in the comments ⬇️ ☺️

This⬇️⬇️

"I'm going to check you"
"I'm just going to break your water"
"We're going to start an IV antibiotic"
"You really need to do this right now"
“You’re not allowed to (walk around, eat, fill in the blank…)"

None of these are examples of informed consent.
Informed consent is a legal, human, and ethical right - established by law.

It’s a discussion that includes:
1️⃣ risks (including future potential risks, i.e. repeat cesareans, post-episiotomy pain, impacting s*x life)
2️⃣ benefits
3️⃣ alternatives

Informed consent also includes the right to INFORMED REFUSAL.

That means you have a legal right to say NO at your birth to anything you believe is not in your and baby's best interest.

Your voice counts and what you say matters.

Being guilted into something or otherwise psychologically pressured is a violation of informed consent.

But violations are common and accepted. It’s common for a practitioner to say something like: ‘a good mom would do this’ and ‘you wouldn’t want to harm your baby’ or “I know this is what you want, but my job is to look out for your baby.” Legally YOU are the one who gets to choose for you and baby and LEGALLY that should be without repercussions to you regardless of outcome. YOU get to make the risk-benefit analysis, but that means getting educated ahead of time. And that’s what I’m here to help you do.

If you want to learn what your birth rights are, the difference between birth rights and hospital policy, and more on how to be your own advocate, I invite you to join my FREE pregnancy, birth, and postpartum course via the link in bio.

Once you join, you'll have access to the previously recorded videos (including the one on advocacy), in addition to supplemental PDFs and guided videos - and all of the ongoing classes coming up, plus the ongoing weekly support group.

Speaking up for ourselves, and speaking our truth makes a difference. It’s how every change in healthcare has actually occurred. And never doubt what s group of committed women can do!
