If you have blood flow problems anywhere, you have blood flow problems everywhere.
Discuss.
ADMIT IT!! admit that you are bone numbingly WORN OUT, utterly OVERWHELMED AND in complete DENIAL
(Defeatist OR Liberation-ist?? OR... NEVER SURRENDER??)
Life is so much fuller and enjoyable when you're..
PRESENT
But that can be INTENSE and DRAINING. Is that why we fight it so?
Between humans and computers, there are SIXTEEN types of memory storage capabilities.
Why the eff are we constantly forgetting and making the same mistakes over and over again.
Do you think you're clear thinking, fully rational and IN CONTROL?
If not, help me understand how not?

The Canadian Massage Conference is taking place in 1 days.
In my 12 year Massage Career I have attended it 6 times. 5 times as a participant and Once as a Speaker.
This year, I am speaking again but I am also attending.
There are still tickets left and I would like to see all of you there.
So, over the next 5 days, I am going to share some of my thoughts on what sessions I think would be the most worthwhile and what I've learned about the topic over the last 12 years.
Recommended Session 5:
𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘆 | 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲 | 𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
We Manual Therapists interact with the sensory nervous system in order to influence the motor nervous system.
But could we be more 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘵 about it?
Diane Jacobs popularized a concept called Dermoneuromodulation where you simply stretch the skin over cutaneous nerve endings to achieve similar results to much of the back breaking, spine splitting deep tissue massages that we do.
No pain No gain, it turns out, is more like: more pain, more pain.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽:
1. 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Neuroplasticity, Pain Receptors (Fast pain, Slow pain), MechanoReceptors, Thermal and Chemical Receptors can all influence our motor system and cause dysfunction.
2. 𝗣𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: In a recent study, patients given positive expectations before their treatment had better outcomes then those given negative or no expectations.
3. 𝗧𝗿𝗼𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲 went from working with Olympic Athletes to Treating pediatric populations in India and has taught at hospitals and Universities around the world. (I'm secretly going to tickle his palm when I shake his hand for the first time)

I started listening to David Goggins recently and he awoke something very urgent and primal in me. To place yourself in uncomfortable physical situations in order to callous the mind so that you can prepare for the hardships that life inevitable brings you. But I digress. Inspired by Goggins I started taking cold showers and I noticed that within seconds I would stop being able to breathe and that I had to force inflate my stomach just to breathe. My ribs were just not moving.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽:
1. 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲: Breathing pattern disruption has been shown to disrupt many physiological functions. Everything from airway obstructions to nerve conduction issues to mouth breathing can all reduce the impact that we can have with our patients.
2. 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 = 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 : There is often a correlation between pulmonary volume and thoracic exapnsion. Research linked below
3. 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗯𝗯𝗲𝘆 is a published researcher popularizing a very important concept of ligamentous issues that mimic muscular issues. I am excited to learn from him

Recommended Session 2:

𝗠𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴
I discovered cupping at a physiotherapy conference where I also discovered Dermoneuromodulation with Diane Jacobs and Simple Contact with Barret Dorko. Over the years I've learned from many different cupping teachers and each time I have marvelled at how useful this modality is.
To clarify, Massage cupping is very different than TCM cupping. Usually, the cups are not left in place and thus there is no angry bruising or bleeding of any kind. Cupping creates incredible shearing forces which seem to help in ways that massage doesn't. I'll let Paul address the science but also:
If you haven't had a cupping session, try it! And see how it changes your body.
𝗥𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽:
1. It's EFFECTIVE: There is evidence that Cupping Therapy can influence the nervous system and has been shown to influence research subjects' perception of pain
2. It's ERGONOMIC: Cupping does all the work so you don't have to.
3. Patients love it: Since Michael Phelps popularized cupping, there has been steady growth of patients asking for cupping. Therapists in our clinic who offer cupping have a steady flow of patients asking for it and the results they reports are fantastic..
