Did you know early intervention is the key to helping a child succeed? Let's talk about it!

Did you know many adults have gone through school without getting their dyslexia identified?

Early identification of dyslexia helps children find effective instruction for their specific needs. The ADA states that earlier identification helps reduce the chance secondary effects setting in such as: frustration, social and emotional issues, low self esteem, and loss of motivation for learning. Children do not grow out of their dyslexia, which is why time is valuable when it comes to dyslexia and a child's positive self esteem!

Dyslexia is often stigmatized against. Let's change this together!

Dyslexia is often stigmatized against and is seen as a disadvantage in the world when the reality is that it's just a different way of thinking. Dyslexia allows people to be inventors, creators, and to be amazing problem solvers since they can think outside of the box.

Their superpowers allow them to see the world in a different way than most of us do which allows them to create solutions that others do not see.

The Phillips Fundamental Learning Center is a centerfold for helping children learn to use their superpowers to excel in the school system. Unlike many schools, PFLC does not focus on a lateral measurement of intelligence. We believe in letting your child's creativity and intelligence be explored! PFLC also educates teachers on dyslexia, helping them create even brighter futures for their students with reading disabilities!

The lack of recognition of dyslexia in Kansas is a social justice issue. Bringing awareness to this issue is the first step that we are taking to help improve literacy rates amongst children in Kansas. Seeing how there is a lack of diagnosis or recognition of dyslexia in children because of their skin color is terrible to hear. But, the Phillips Fundamental Learning Center strives to bring light to this situation and to improve the reading abilities of children coming from all backgrounds.

The Science of Reading (A Response to the New York Times) - International Dyslexia Association 01/06/2022

Phonics is outdated?

The NY Times has followed how Phonics has gone in and out of style for decades when it comes to teaching children how to read. Under President George W. Bush, phonics had a major push under a federal program called Reading First. Sadly, this program didn’t create the achievements that were originally planned for the program throughout America’s education system.

Schools are figuring out that phonics alone is not enough to help students become competent readers; they are now applying the “science of reading”.

In response to the New York Times, the International Dyslexia Association has written a response that holds instructions on becoming a Competent Reader. They emphasize the importance of applying the Science of Reading (“.. phonics instruction in isolation is insufficient.”).

The Phillips Fundamental Center strives to help teachers learn how to apply the Science of Reading to help their students that struggle to read become more proficient. We not only work with children with dyslexia, but can also help children without dyslexia become more proficient and independent with their reading.

Princess Beatrice says her children would be ‘lucky’ to have dyslexia 12/13/2021

Princess Beatrice is a person with dyslexia and was diagnosed at age seven. By keeping a positive mindset and focusing on what she “could do” rather than couldn’t do - Princess Beatrice has been able to master her dyslexia superpowers to help her excel.

In the article below, Princess Beatrice has stated that “As an older person looking back, it (dyslexia) has allowed me to look at things in a new way and come up with solutions - I always describe it like being able to think in a circle”.
Here, at the Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, we have the tools to help children tap into their superpowers and provide extra support just as the Helen Arkell Centre did for Princess Beatrice. The NHS describes dyslexia as a “common learning difficulty” but dyslexia is different from other learning disabilities because a person’s intelligence is NOT affected. According to the NHS 1 in 5 persons have dyslexia and at PFLC we hope to help those with reading disabilities learn how to navigate through life like Princess Beatrice.
