πΎWe are so happy to honor Maddox and his July birthday by making goodie bags filled with a toy and treats for the sweet pups at the Kansas Humane Society who have found a loving home! Maddox's therapy work with KHS was something he loved doing and cherished seeing all the children he interacted with! Maddox's legacy is one of kindness and love and we are thankful to get to still be a part of giving back in the community! ππ

"He's not your kid."
As I tuck him in every night.
"He's not your kid."
As I make my breakfast, I scramble him up some eggies and make sure he gets the most important meal of the day.
"He's not your kid."
As I do my laundry, I make sure his blankets/jackets and beddng (he still sleeps with us every night in OUR bed) are also clean.
"He's not your kid."
As I nursed him back to his optimal health the first few months I had him.
"He's not your kid."
As I just changed my entire career and life so I could be home with him more during the days and save for our future because I was sick of seeing him so sad on the furbo.
"He's not your kid."
As I hang his coat/blanket (one of many) on the coat hanger next to ours.
"He's not your kid."
As I pick up all his toys and place them back on his bed for him to through them everywhere as soon as he waks up from his nap.
"He's not your kid."
As I take him out yet again to play and run in the snow while my fingers are numb but he's only a puppy for so long.
"He's not your kid."
Yea, he's not my kid.
He's my heart. My world. My baby.
And for those who can't see the similarities between a puppy and a child and for those who really think a dog is really "just a dog," you must never have found your heart dog and I pray one day, you do.

Well said!πΎ πΎ
Good morning! This is Christy, the ED of WAAL. You know, there's a lot of administrative work when it comes to running a rescue. Paying bills, writing grants, communicating with donors, making vet appointments, and the constant perusal of intake requests/shelter reports, etc.
As I sat here yesterday working on various things, I kept getting email alert after email alert. While I was hoping for notifications on a grant or a new foster application, alas, they were all owner surrender requests for both cats and dogs. Dozens of them... in one day.
Now, to be honest, I'm torn. I'm happy that these owners are trying to do the right thing and find a safe place for their animals to go. I'm happy that they aren't dumping them in the country or randomly giving them away to anyone looking for a "breeding dog," but I will say that many of the reasons given are reasons that could be addressed by the owner. Sadly, our society has very much taken the "disposable" mindset when it comes to pets, and people just aren't willing to do what it takes oftentimes. This often includes when we offer assistance. We have SO many programs designed to help people keep their pets.
Now, before anyone starts yelling, there ARE legitimate reasons to rehome a pet. I'm not denying that, and we try our best to help those families. But the vast majority of the requests we are getting don't fall into that category:
1. I have no time (please see the graphic).
2. I adopted the dog three days ago and my other dog hates him (please see graphic).
3. I'm a dog breeder and I can't get rid of my last puppy.
4. My cat keeps having kittens and we don't know what to do.
I think I can safely say that all of us in animal rescue are begging you at this point. Please think twice before rehoming. There is NOWHERE for them to go. Your 4-year intact Black Lab, who once used to be a commodity, is now at risk in an incredibly overburdened system. PLEASE consider resources that may be available to you. PLEASE commit to doing what your animal needs. PLEASE spay and neuter! PLEASE do not get a pet unless you can commit for their entire lifetime!
πΎ It is amazing how much love and laughter dogs bring into our lives. A strong bond between a person and their dog can be life changing. π©΅π

π£Gemmaπ£
Meet Gemma, a sweet, little 4-year-old Chihuahua. This girl was in some serious trouble when it was found that she had a bowel obstruction and then also discovered she had perforations as well. She needed immediate surgery to remove the obstruction, so her loving mom reached out for help for her life saving surgery. The surgery was quite extensive, with having to remove 8 inches of this tiny girl's bowels, as well as being very close to her pancreas which posed additional problems. Gemmaβs veterinarian was able to successfully navigate through the surgery and we are happy to report she is now home and recovering! Her mom tells us she is doing so much better but has a bit of a road to recovery ahead.
~THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! We are forever grateful for your team in being a pillar of Gemmaβs lifesaving surgery and recovery. ~Gemmaβs Mom π©΅π©΅
