2021 JayDoc 1st year Pharmacy Student of the Year: Lupe Fraire

“The opportunity to serve my community and gain interprofessional clinical experience that ensures the improvement in our patients’ quality of life is why I devote my time to JayDoc. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills taught by my school and thoroughly enjoy being able to apply this safely and effectively, while continuously learning from both patients and peers to provide quality care to those in need.”

2021 JayDoc Premedical Student of the year: Mary Horban

"I volunteer for JayDoc because it is the only organization in Wichita that offers medical students clinical hands on learning while serving the indigent population of Wichita.
I think this organization has been very beneficial to me as a pre-med student because I get to see how medical students are trained to think and how attendings use established processes and patient interactions to push students to use critical thinking each visit.

I would recommend other Wichita Students volunteer for JayDoc because it is the only way to see all the information you learn applied in real life settings. These appointments are not simulations, they are real people who have come to seek care and it is the student's responsibility to provide this care under the supervision of the attending. As a pre-medical student you are able to see how trust is built between the Medical student and their patient. This trust is the foundation of continued care and determines if the patient stays on track with the prescribed plan.

I am excited about JayDoc because the work is very meaningful and unique! It's just a bonus that all the Medical students and attendings are very helpful and really want you to get what you can out of this experience. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in becoming a medical student and serving the indigent population of Wichita. I am so honored and grateful to be chosen for this program!! I hope I get to come back again next year as a medical student."

2021 JayDoc 2nd year Pharmacy Student of the Year: Dylan Moore

"I am excited about JayDoc because it gives me a chance as a student to positively impact our community with some of the patients who need care they might not receive without JayDoc. It also gives me as a student the opportunity to learn outside the classroom and interact with fellow healthcare professionals in my area to improve the health of our community.

I think that volunteering as a pharmacy student is beneficial because it gives the medical students another viewpoint as a tool to help our patients. Our pharmaceutical knowledge relieves them of the burden of having to look that information up during an appointment, and allows them to better care for the patient. During JayDoc I’ve had several medical students thank me for my advice regarding diabetes, cholesterol, and blood pressure drugs, in order to help our patients."

"“I think the interdisciplinary nature of JayDoc is very important for providing excellent patient care. We have done this for years in the hospital setting, but it is fairly new in ambulatory care in this state. Having Medical and Pharmacy students working together to treat ambulatory patients improves patient outcomes and is also educational for the students.”
