Schools for Children prides itself in creating school communities that are responsive to the individual needs of its students. Since no one model best matches the needs of all students, we have strived to create distinctive schools characterized by varied learning methodologies targeted to specific student populations.

Each of the five schools currently under our umbrella represents an effort to transform learning by offering programs that constitute the right fit for its unique set of students.

12/16/2023

Another service offered by Schools for Children is Transition Support for our HS students as they go off to college, careers, and beyond.

For this we established The Everest Program at Dearborn Academy and the Different Choices Fair, a virtual fair that focuses on meeting the needs of students with IEPs, 504s, learning disabilities, and mental health conditions.

Different Choices Fairs have collected a variety of webinars and interviews that help students and families explore options from colleges to alternative learning programs, to gap years, apprenticeships and services.

We hope you will support Dearborn Academy, a Schools for
Children school.

We create distinctive schools characterized by varied learning methodologies targeted to specific student populations, because we know that no one model best matches the needs of all students.

Dearborn Academy focuses on a population of students with behaviors that are not disruptive to the learning environment, and who have painful struggles with mental illness that result in avoidance of school and related activities. Our calm milieu and expert staff help students practice strategies to more fully access their education.

Our donors support this work through enrichment
initiatives and activities such as athletic teams, technology, special workshops, field trips and more.

Dearborn STEP Program

Dearborn STEP (Short Term Educational Placement) provides an intensive clinical, therapeutic assessment to students in Grades 5-12 for up to 45 school days. These students may have struggled to be successful due to social-emotional challenges, learning challenges, attendance challenges, and suspensions. Additionally, some students are referred to Dearborn STEP because they are in need of a hospital step-down to help them become re-acclimated to a school environment.

Here are just a few ways your gifts have helped the Dearborn community thrive so far this year:

● Joining in the nationwide craze, Dearborn students of all grade levels have found joy in playing pickleball with our brand new equipment.
● If you walked in the auditorium on Friday afternoons, you would be greeted with contagious
laughter and joy coming from our new partnership with the theater program Company One.
● The front of our building now has flags and a sign that proudly announces our presence on
Washington Street.
● A 12th grade student has taken the initiative to start a Book Club ⎼ each student in the club can receive a fresh new copy of the books they choose to read!

Thank you for everything you do to support our special community.

While legislators and parents around the U.S. organize book bans and challenge curricula that mention race and lgbtq+ issues, John Charow is ensuring that Seaport Academy students study the good, bad and ugly parts of American history.

He believes learning history, including conflicts among people, countries and regions, helps students realize that keeping the lines of communication open strengthens relationships that, in turn, lessen conflict.

Who Decides What History Is Told? | Schools for Children 06/28/2023

Today, national debates rage about what students can be taught within the study of history, particularly as it relates to disenfranchised populations. At Schools for Children, we speak of the importance of inclusivity throughout our schools. That’s not just about who walks our hallways. It’s about whose story gets told.

Who Decides What History Is Told? | Schools for Children While debates rage about what students can be taught within the study of history, Schools for Children celebrates inclusive history.
