Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day to reflect on our nation’s history and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice for all.
In the words of Opal Lee, often referred to as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”: “None of us are free until we’re all free.”
Let us use this time to honor the resilience and contributions of Black Americans and to commit ourselves to the pursuit of freedom and equity.
