The Fourth of July—also known as Independence Day or July 4th—has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. Stay safe as you celebrate our independence 🇺🇸

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It is a day to reflect on our nation’s history and the ongoing journey toward equality and justice for all.

In the words of Opal Lee, often referred to as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”: “None of us are free until we’re all free.”

Let us use this time to honor the resilience and contributions of Black Americans and to commit ourselves to the pursuit of freedom and equity.

-Dr. Antonia Monk Richburg, CEO

Last week, in partnership with the Campus Kitchen at Wake Forest University and Harvest Table Culinary Group, United Way’s Partnership for Prosperity volunteered for a community space renovation that encourages play areas for kids, nutritious eating through planting garden beds, and community building through assembling picnic tables. This was such a wonderful opportunity to help revitalize a neighbhorhood east of Highway 52, and we are so grateful for everyone who came ❤️😊
