Behind the design, from the artist : When envisioning "The Light Has Come" the impression of the brightness of a night star arising from behind a craggy mountain immediately came to mind. There is something about the hidden light, blocked by trials or circumstances, that when the time is right it makes an appearance. In the fullness of glory. Really, nothing stops light from illuminating dark spaces but it can be obstructed. What is it that keeps us from experiencing the Light that has come in full abundance in our everyday lives?

Let’s step into the light! “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you” Isaiah 60:1

Take a moment each day for one week to pause and practice feeling gratitude. Write down 2-3 things you appreciate. Just one week! After 7 days, reflect on how this has impacted you. You just might want to repeat…

This is a common human experience - to look around and find it hard to be thankful. But practicing gratitude is not just for the big exciting things. In fact, exercising gratitude when the big things aren’t looking good can be a game changer. Gratitude also isn’t just painting all the hard things positively!

Gratitude is a simple discipline, feeling appreciation for goodness or beauty. Finding goodness and beauty amidst grief, loss, pain, or suffering can seem impossible. This is why we start with God - Who He is and His presence with us. We can always rest in this goodness - no matter what, God is with us. God’s stable character and heart of love give us a solid foundation to operate from.

Let’s practice: Find something in your immediate surroundings that you appreciate - your favorite mug, a blanket, your journal, something in nature - pause and notice why you appreciate this thing that brings you joy or holds beauty. Sit with that feeling until you can sense the gratitude in your body. Notice what you are feeling after this. Try to practice this regularly, and notice what shifts!

Gratitude sparks joy in our brains - when you are feeling down, gratitude can help you reset - to connect relationally with God and others. It is one of the most powerful tools to open our hearts to sense God and experience His peace.

Being thankful in all things, is not being thankful FOR all things. Thankfulness or gratitude has been scientifically proven to be good for us. God is inviting us to experience goodness! In all circumstances, we can be thankful for who God is and His love and grace shown through Jesus. We don’t have to appreciate all of our circumstances, but we can always appreciate who He is IN our circumstances!
