🛑STOP🛑 WA SB 6236 from Lowering Reporting Age
Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,
Please tell the Senate Committee on Early Learning & K-12 Education that you oppose lowering the mandatory reporting age!
Specifically, please inform senators that you object to Washington SB 6236, which would place additional burdens on prospective homeschool parents!
This bill would require parents who intend to homeschool to file a declaration of intent (DOI) for some children who are not even compulsory school age! Under this bill, a parent would be required to file a DOI during the school year when a child turns 6 and again at age 7.
The Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee is scheduled to discuss this bill during a public hearing January 24 beginning at 10:30 a.m.
ACTION REQUESTED
1. Comment on the bill and let your state senator know that you OPPOSE placing burdens on parents prior to compulsory school age.
2. Find your elected official and email them your comments!
3. Contact members of the Senate Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and tell them you OPPOSE this bill!
4. Contact fellow homeschooling families you know and tell them about this bill so they can be informed and become engaged.
5. Consider testifying on January 24, and letting the committee know that you OPPOSE the bill. You can sign up to testify online or submit a written testimony here.
WHY WE OPPOSE THIS BILL
• It discriminates against certain parents. Parents intending to provide home-based instruction would have increased requirements, but parents intending to send their child to a public or private school have no such obligation.
• It increases the regulatory burden on parents and school administrators. This regulation would require two additional years’ worth of homeschool paperwork from parents, effectively increasing their regulatory burden by 30%. Failure to comply with these additional requirements would incur truancy charges. It also increases the amount of paperwork which must be processed by administrators, which often leads to delays and mistakes.
• It is a step towards lowering the compulsory school age. It is not a big step from this legislation, if passed, to lowering the compulsory education age in a future legislative session. If there is no compulsion to attend, there is nothing for parents to declare. These legislators know this, which indicates that their ultimate goal is lowering the compulsory attendance age.
