For Indigenous Peoples Day:
Akih was the undergraduate literary publication of York Junior College. This issue from 1963 contains poems, prose and short stories. We aren't certain why the booklet was named this-does anyone have a guess? There could be a very swell prize in it for you!
150 years ago today, the York Collegiate Institute opened. This rare photograph shows the original building. If you look closely, Rev. McDougal the first headmaster and why there is McDougal Lounge in today's Student Union, is standing at the entrance to the left of the gentleman in the stovepipe hat.
York Collegiate Institute became York Junior College in 1941.
Who are these people?
Photographs taken at the same event--looks like a debate, doesn't it? - appear in the 1982 yearbook on pages 2 and 3. It's unfortunate that there are no captions in that year's Horizon, because your YCP Archives would like to identify the occasion and the folks in it for digitization. We all think that the individuals on the right are students and those on the left are visitors to the campus. Anyone out there who might have more of a clue than we do?

Did you know that Country Club Manor dorms were originally apartments for York residents? York College purchased them in 1976 for $905,000 Check out this architectural drawing for the original complex courtesy of the York County History Center.

Check this out! Just added to the archives: The first issue of The Spartan which is dated March 20, 1972. Thanks to Jeff Remaly '74 for keeping this and 16 other early issues of the student newspaper. Donations like Jeff's help to enrich our collection.

Check out this vintage 'tweet' from nearly 70 years ago! It's a telegram to Dr. Robert Dawes, second president of York Junior College.
(And just for fun, here's the song Western Union from 1967, by the FIve Americans, a one-hit-wonder band.) https://www.google.com/search?q=western+union+five+american&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS1032US1032&oq=western+&aqs=chrome.0.69i59j69i57j46i131i199i433i465i512j46i131i433i512j46i131i199i433i465i512j46i131i433i512j0i131i433j46i131i199i433i465i512j46i131i433j0i271.4521j1j15&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 =ive&vld=cid:1f02be25,vid:Pd_9tC-jbsU
Check out this old tech! Any guesses on what these '60s & '70s machines did?
33 years ago the parking garage and Tyler Run apartments were under construction. This summer, the garage is being demolished. Do you remember looping around both levels, looking for a parking place?
Check out this excellent advertisement for our radio station from 1971 (the student newspaper was called Backpages, then). You will note that we were AM only. When did we go FM? The first person with the correct answer will receive a prize and congrats! Jeffrey Schiffman
Vintage Mechanical Engineers:
This photo was found in a 1936 issue of the York Collegiate Institute's student newspaper The Chronicle: Members of the Mechanics Club work on a combustion engine.
This neighborhood watering hole has been open for 47 years. Other than the prices, we wonder what's changed since then. Please post any photos and memories!
(This advertisement is from 1977.)
An interesting photo showing what would become York College's West Campus. Can you spot Country Club Manor Apartments? Does anyone know what business was in the building that appears in the foreground? Jim McClure
From our archives:
Who ARE these people???!
Found in our archives without any identification. Help us solve the mystery of the who, what, when, where, and why of this photo. We think it was taken in the early '70s. What do you think?
February 1974:
Seated in front of one its murals, students enjoy conversation in the Coffee House. The students are (l to r): Mary Jo Miggins, freshman art major from Mohopac, NY; Nancy Farverm freshman art major, Columbia NJ; Joe Semmelman, senior English major; Martha Hodges, senior, liberal arts; Jeffrey Belli, sophomore, management major, Frederick, MD; Ava Harrison sophomore, art major, Reistertown, MD.
Can you guess where the Coffee House was? Hint: It was on Main Campus. (You could win a very groovy prize if your guess comes close to the right answer.)
March 2, 1916: Exactly 106 years ago, there was a basketball game played between the York County Academy and the York Collegiate Institute. Those of you who are fans of YCP's history will know that these two schools--YCA and YCI--are the oldest in our lineage. They merged in 1929.

This 1968 photo shows the newly-installed portals at the entrance to campus. Does anyone know the year/make of the car?
Well, that was different!
This photo was taken in 1975. How many things have changed since then? What has stayed the same?
From our Archives:
This is one of the oldest photographs in our collection:
York Collegiate Institute, College Avenue and Duke Street. It was taken in 1873, shortly after the school opened (the second in our lineage) to primary and high school-aged students. It burned down in 1885 and was replaced by the building that would go on to be the first home of York Junior College.
Can you find the infamous Rev. McDougall?
