As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are hearing from some of our leaders to share what's your favorite tradition from your Hispanic Heritage! "Food and family are everything to me! I have a deep love for Puerto Rican cuisine. Growing up, we would travel to Brooklyn, NY, once a month to visit my grandmother, aunts, uncles, and cousins. She would prepare the most delicious meals I've ever tasted, and those gatherings left a lasting impression on me. The joy of eating and spending time with family is something I cherish. Whenever I enjoy Puerto Rican food in York, it instantly transports me back to those cherished traditions." ~Brian Grimm

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15, is a time to recognize and honor the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities across the United States. This month serves as a reminder of the vibrant traditions, history, and resilience of these communities, and it also presents an opportunity to reflect on the challenges they continue to face. In Pennsylvania, where the Hispanic and Latinx community is growing rapidly, these challenges are particularly pronounced, especially for ALICE households, or Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it's crucial to acknowledge these barriers and work toward creating a more equitable society by removing obstacles to wellness, economic stability, and social inclusion. Learn more about barriers for Spanish-speaking communities in Pennsylvania in our latest blog post. https://buff.ly/3ZD607u

Yesterday, our VP of Impact and Strategy, Laura O’Grady, was invited to speak at the White House for the National Rural Childcare Forum. She was joined by Katie Caples, Director of ECHO at Community Connections for Children, and Brendan Salyard, Economic Initiatives Manager for the York County Economic Alliance, to share the work that ECHO is doing to double the number of children from low-income families in York County who receive high-quality early childhood education.

While the ECHO initiative is tailored to the specific needs of York County, this was an amazing opportunity to share with peers and government officials the lasting impact that ECHO will have on the childcare crisis in our community with the intent to drive meaningful, sustainable, and replicable change.

For many Americans, the quest for affordable housing now requires considerable patience, resourcefulness, flexibility, and competition. For the Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed (ALICE) - which as of 2022, was 25% of the US population, not including those earning below the federal poverty level - this goal often remains perpetually out of reach.
