Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated each year from September 15 to October 15, is a time to recognize and honor the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities across the United States. This month serves as a reminder of the vibrant traditions, history, and resilience of these communities, and it also presents an opportunity to reflect on the challenges they continue to face. In Pennsylvania, where the Hispanic and Latinx community is growing rapidly, these challenges are particularly pronounced, especially for ALICE households, or Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it's crucial to acknowledge these barriers and work toward creating a more equitable society by removing obstacles to wellness, economic stability, and social inclusion. Yesterday, our VP of Impact and Strategy, Laura O’Grady, was invited to speak at the White House for the National Rural Childcare Forum. She was joined by Katie Caples, Director of ECHO at Community Connections for Children, and Brendan Salyard, Economic Initiatives Manager for the York County Economic Alliance, to share the work that ECHO is doing to double the number of children from low-income families in York County who receive high-quality early childhood education.

While the ECHO initiative is tailored to the specific needs of York County, this was an amazing opportunity to share with peers and government officials the lasting impact that ECHO will have on the childcare crisis in our community with the intent to drive meaningful, sustainable, and replicable change.

Today is Women’s Equality Day, the 104th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, giving women the right to vote. This is a day that celebrates and honors the women’s suffrage movement and acknowledges the hurdles that women have had to overcome in their stride toward equality and progress.

This morning, United Way of York County staff attended the District Employee Wellness Fair at Central York High School. We are sending well wishes to all of the York County teachers, staff, and students who are going back to school this week!

Yesterday, our Women United group had the pleasure of hearing from Erica Townes, Associate Attorney at Snyder during our "Interviews with Inspiring Women" Series. Thank you to everyone who came out for this great discussion and conversation!

Yesterday, some of our United Way of York County team members attended the Volunteer Appreciation Game at the York Revolution! We enjoyed watching our President, Brian Grimm, throw out the first pitch, celebrating our amazing volunteers with a pregame parade, and getting the crowd excited for Live United, Give Local: A Day of Action in collaboration with Give Local York. Special thanks to Shipley Energy for letting us borrow their awesome suite!

July is Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) Mental Health Month. Yesterday, members of our Impact Team attended the YWCA York’s BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Symposium and met Dr. Lakita Davis-Jones, the Secretary of the Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) of Pennsylvania.
