I wanted to share this (not my words) -

"What kind of filter do you see the world through? Do you look for goodness or deceit, kindness or selfishness, intelligence or stupidity, beauty or ugliness?

The sage Ramakrishna told a parable that’s a great example of our ability to interpret the world according to our own mindset...

Four people were walking along a path one morning when they came across a man lying down with his eyes closed at the side of the path.

The first person concluded that the man must have been out gambling all night and fallen asleep on his way home. The second person thought that the man was unwell. The third was sure that the man was drunk. The last concluded that the man must be a saint in such a state of blissful samadhi that he was unaware of his surroundings.

We don’t know which person, if anyone, was right. They each saw a projection of themselves in the man. The person who thought the man was drunk was a drinker, the one who saw a saint was a saint.

One of the problems with our filters is that they are self-perpetuating. We don’t just focus in on the things that we are looking for, we filter out evidence of that which shows the opposite.

There’s an exercise that those of you who are teachers might like to try with your students that demonstrates this. Ask them took around the room and make a mental note of everything that is red. Then tell them to close their eyes and tell you everything they saw that was green (or blue or yellow or any other colour). People can often hardly think of anything because, even though they had just looked around, they had filtered out everything that wasn’t red.

When we realise how this works, the polarisation of our politics and the inability of people to see the other side’s point of view makes more sense. Especially when online algorithms persistently reinforce this polarisation, acting as a pre-installed, self-perpetuating filter on our world.

Yoga philosophy in general, and the practice of Swadhyaya, Self-Inquiry, in particular, is really about first recognising and then removing our filters, stripping our experience back to its truthful essence, free from assumptions and misconceptions.

Then we have a chance to return to our essential, filterless nature — freedom"

Love and Oneness 🙏🏼❤️

One of the 6 major obstacles to Yoga (or union) is over eating.
When the body is overloaded with food it becomes sluggish and mind becomes dull.
Over a period of time toxins build up, constipation sets in and the whole physical - mental system becomes blocked.
You won't progress as quickly in your Yoga if you are overeating.

When the mind and body are not functioning in harmony, there is a division between the physical and mental rhythms.

Which inevitably leads to sickness...

(Hatha Yoga Pradipika) verse 15. Page 51.

Food really makes a difference to how you feel you feel you attend a yoga class. From personal experience I don't eat 2 to 3 hours before a class which means my stomach is light. Empty and I can move with lightness. I also have more clarity and feel good mentally.

Also I rarely feel sluggish and am rarely sick. Because I eat 95% of the time REAL food.

We can't rely on just Yoga to improve our mental and physical wellbeing. We must look at what we are eating and drinking.....(amongst other lifestyle choices)

Beautiful Bird song for our Yoga class this morning.

It truly is a peaceful and beautiful spot in Nature.

28/05/2024

Yoga outdoors in Nature at Knoll Gardens starts Thursday 30th May, then every Thursday at 9am until the end of September.

Along with Jackie Hayfield Yoga we will be taking Yoga outdoors at the tranquil and stunning Knoll Gardens. I think what makes this a truly magical place is the well-kept gardens, the array of trees and plants and grasses. The walkways meandering around the gardens there is always something to see and find. But the fact is we have the garden all to ourselves for our session. Plus, if it's raining, we have a lovely marquee to practice under. We embrace nature and the weather and use it to guide our practice. You will leave feeling lighter, fresher, and calmer.

I did my three year renewal one day first aid course today and it's a reminder that everyone should invest in learning this. It's worth the money when you can help save lives... your friends, family and members of the public including my yoga students!. 🙏 you never know when you might need to administer anything covered in the training. In particular CPR!

I enjoyed some time out in Nature this morning on a walk and love it when I find a good tree🌲

Tree pose - replicates the graceful, steady stance of a tree.

Benefits
🌲 brings balance and equilibrium to your mind
🌲 helps feel connected to nature
🌲 helps improve concentration
🌲 helps strength and stability
🌲 improves balance
🌲 improves patience
🌲 cultivates inner peace

Incorporating Tree pose into your daily life will help provide stability and strength in your balancing both on and off your Yoga mat.

It will help cultivate patience and focus.

Use Anjali mudra a gesture of reverence and presence...invoking a clear and centered state of mind.

And remember.. smile smile smile 😀
😀 relieves stress
😀elevates mood
😀 relaxes facial muscles

🙏

03/05/2024

A reminder on Bank Holidays Mondays there is no Yoga.
Its my chance to enjoy a three day weekend and spend quality time with family and the great outdoors. Hoping to have a sea dip weather and sea conditions permitting and I have my 5 year old Nephew staying over and I'm taking him to a family yoga class (I think I'm the more excited one out of us!😁) I start an online Yoga Philosophy course Sunday evening which I've been wanting to do for a while because I love reading and bringing in the Yoga Sutras into my daily life. 😀

I hope you have time to slow down and rejuvinate its so important to block out that time to nourish yourself. Recharge. ⚡🙌🙏

What are your plans this weekend? ❓

23/04/2024

Yoga isn't about what you look like it's about how you feel.

Notice, observe, just be with yourself and your body. Become your own teacher. Listen to what you need every time you step onto your Yoga mat

Tonight I went to a hot vinyasa class I know its a strong practice with one of my favourite and fantastic teachers Pip. I know the class will be flowing and challenging and there's always optional arm balances. Handstands. Forearm stands etc. But tonight I didn't have the strength in my body to attempt these. My body was telling me no.. not tonight.. don't force yourself into an inversion take a child's pose and regulate your breath. My breath was starting to become short and strained. I knew I was working too hard. Our yoga practice should be strong. Fluid and graceful and the breath steady.
Listen to your breath it will guide you. Listen to the sensations in the body it will tell you what to do.
In Savasana I felt peace and calm flood my mind and body. My breath was quiet. It was blissful.
Walking home I felt as light as a cloud. Relaxed and open.

This is my most valuable piece of advice for not just yoga students but for every body

Slow down. Sit in stillness and listen...be guided from within. Honour your body and mind. Take care of yourself.

🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏❤🙏

Wow January has flown by and classes this month have had an underlying theme with breathwork and movement to support Circulation. Digestion and for the next two weeks core strength.

By having a focus we can direct our energy and mind to a central point in our practice. Helping us become more present in the moment. Listening to the subtle signs of our body and nocticing the quality of our breath.

Asking ourselves
What do I need from my Yoga Practice today?
What will nourish my body and mind?

And off our Yoga mats
What do I need more of in my life to nurture positive wellbeing?
What do I need less of that isn't supporting my mind and body?

It's really important to take time for self reflection. Maybe keeping a journal to record thoughts and actions.

Sometimes we get caught up in auto pilot and then suddenly we come crashing down with illness and burnout.

By learning to recognise signs in your body and thoughts in your mind we can almost 'nip things in the bud' so to speak. And then add in or take away things in our life to bring about balance of effort and ease in body and mind.

Yoga helps us cultivate this mind body connection
Yoga supports us to bring our body and mind into harmony.
Yoga offers us the skills to navigate and live a joyful and easeful life.

Between me and Olly we have alot of books but they are all positive books mostly around topics such as Yoga and Personal Development. We love to learn and study. I often read a book once then go back to read it again and make notes.
I highly recommend the three books in the photo below....
🌟Happy Mind, Happy Life by Dr Rangan Chaterjee (also check out his podcasts!)
⚡The Monk who Sold his Ferarri by Rob Sharman
💪 The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod

Wow just inspirational books.. seriously powerful and life changing.

"Our mind is like a garden to flourish it must be nourished daily"

"When you master your mind you master life"

"Success on the outside begins with success on the inside"

"Saying you do not have time to improve yourself is like saying you don't have time to stop for fuel because you are too busy driving , eventually it will catch up with you"

"It's the repetitions of affirmations that leads to belief. Once that belief becomes a deep conviction things begin to happen"
