BRINGING NEW SPECIES TO LIFE The Discovery of the Grootvadersbosch Dwarf Chameleon
Krystal will discuss the basics of chameleon ecology and biology and will introduce South Africa's endemic dwarf chameleons. She will also touch on several exciting new discoveries and will shed light on how new species are confirmed and eventually named.
Prof Krystal Tolley is the research leader of the Leslie Hill Molecular Ecology Laboratory at the South African National Biodiversity Institute. She has worked on chameleons since coming to South Africa in 2001. Many hours have been spent studying chameleons in the field “and even more time in the DNA lab, uncovering the secrets of their evolution, relationships, and taxonomy.” Her book, Chameleons of Southern Africa, came about “because people had so many questions about chameleons that needed answering. These included – how many babies they have, how to tell males from females, and what they eat, among others". Also, “amazingly – there was no readily available book on the natural history of chameleons.” Krystal has recently described three new chameleon species, one of which is restricted to the Grootvadersbosch Forest.
