What a magnificent boy! Onyx is so ready for his forever home! He is a five year old mixed breed male and he is fully vaccinated, microchipped and sterilised.
Onyx was surrendered to us as a victim of a nasty stabbing. HIs wound has healed perfectly and he is a sweet, friendly and playful dog who gets on well with other dogs and cats. He is healthy and happy, with a beautiful, sleek black coat. He would make a great family dog!
If you would like to adopt him, please call Sandy on 021 5107360 or email [email protected].

Help Us Protect Animals! 💪🐾

🌟 We have an incredible opportunity to make a huge difference in our local community! 🌟

We're raising funds to send our field worker, Michael, to complete an inspector's course starting on September 17th. Michael is driven & eager to make more of a difference. The course costs R6000 and we are hoping that we can cover the cost of some, if not all, of this vital course.

By having an inspector, we can enforce the Animals Protection Act where needed, easing the burden on other organizations and making sure there are more hands on deck to aid the suffering of those who need us the most.

Please consider donating towards Michael's course. Every contribution counts!

HAWK rescues - TWO fosters needed. 🙏🐕🐕 (Cape Town)

Max & Ruth are two of the animals uplifted during the HAWK intervention. We were lucky enough to place them into a foster home at short notice, however, their current foster cannot foster them any longer. They are both lovely natured dogs that deserve a shot at a happy ever after. ✨

They need to go to two different foster homes as this will benefit them in the long run. They will do well with another dog friend that they can learn from. They are still young and eager to learn all about being in a home environment that involves healthy boundaries and loads of love.

⭐Please help us to give them this chance so that they can find their forever homes soon.⭐

If you can foster either of them, please contact us on [email protected] or 021 510 7360

Happy International Dog Day! 🐕❤️

Today, we celebrate our beloved four-legged (and sometimes three-legged!) companions who fill our lives with joy, loyalty, and endless love. From the dogs with the top important jobs like sniffer dogs & guide dogs, to the dogs whose only job is to laze on your bed – they are all just amazing and so special. ✨

📷 Let’s BOMBARD social media today with pictures of your dogs! Share a picture in the Facebook comments or tag us on your Instagram story.

➡️🖼️Featured in this graphic is Onyx, a majestic medium-large-sized dog who is currently up for adoption! He was uplifted from Dunoon after he was badly hurt. It seemed that he was sliced with something very sharp and it required him to have a skin graft with many visits to and from the vet. Today he is healed, healthy and happy! He is waiting for his forever home that he so badly deserves. He is about 4/5 years old and good with other dogs. If you would like to find out more about adopting Onyx, please contact us on [email protected]

Recent floods and a fire highlighted some concerns at a local shelter. Irrespective of the floods and fire, which we understand is a huge blow for any organisation, it is clear that this shelter possibly can be dealing with chronic problems of over-crowding, lack of resources, proper housing for animals, medical treatment and much more.

Many organisations, forums and authorities such as SPCA are standing together to assist these animals and take action where need be. We would like to take in animals, and find them a permanent forever home. Despite our posts, no fosters have yet come forward. PLEASE help us to help them. We want to collect 3 dogs today, but cant if we dont have fosters. Please consider opening your home and heart to one of these animals.

The application process is easy and not time consuming, we will guide you through it.

The more fosters that sign up - the more we can help. There is over 260 animals allegedly - let us stand together to help.

We provide: Any medical care, food, bedding, parasite control and anything you may need. We support you throughout the process.

All we need: A loving (and approved) home where this animal can recover and heal. A care-giver who is willing to take the animal to vets when needed, take the animal to adoption fairs when required (usually once a month) and give lots of TLC.

What you get: knowing that we cant change the world, but you can change the world of one of these poor animals.🙏❤️‍🩹

Hard to watch ‼️ - but this is the reality 😞. African Tails, as well as numerous other organisations are working with the SPCA to reduce the suffering of these animals from this shelter. We would like to help as many as possible. See our post about Rayne posted earlier today on our timeline. She comes from this "shelter". The reality is, if we can not find fosters, we can not help. We are in DESPERATE need of fosters to help these animals. Especially for dogs at this stage.

We provide: Any medical care, food, bedding, parasite control and anything you may need. We support you thoughout the process.

Please help us to find a foster for Rayne - a sweet German Shepard cross female. 🩷

Recently, a shelter was badly affected by floods as well as a fire which sadly led to the loss of some animals as well as infrastructure. Upon further investigation, it was uncovered that the shelter was overwhelmed due to the high volumes of animals and other organisations have been trying to intervene to alleviate the pressure. Apart from this, the matter is being dealt with by the correct authorities & channels.

➡️➡️To start with, we would really like to help Rayne. 🥹

She is one of the dogs discovered on the property and we need to find her a foster home as soon as possible. Currently she is safe & being cared for by her finder until we can find a foster home. However, this needs to happen as soon as possible.

Rayne has been tested with other dogs, cats and even ducks, and she seems to be absolutely fine! She is a sweet sweet girl that is estimated to be around 7 years old. She is currently being treated for mange (it is already healing), an ear infection and arthritis in her hip. She is responding well to all treatment and African Tails will continue to cover all costs for any treatment. (as well as food, bedding & anything else needed for this girl)

We can’t wait to find Rayne the home she deserves, but for now, please let us know if you can foster her.

If you can help, please contact us on – [email protected] or whatsapp - 060 976 7790

Today is 'International Homeless Animals Day'. 🌍🐾

Every third Saturday in August is a day set to shine spotlight on the countless animals in need of our help. There are so many dogs & cats without homes, yet there are still individuals that continue to breed or buy. 😔

Here’s how you can promote responsible pet ownership 👇

🔸Sterilize Your Pets! Help to prevent the birth of more dogs & cats which will alleviate pressure on an already highly pressured animal welfare system. Give animals in shelters/foster homes, a better chance at finding loving homes.

🔸Adopt, Don’t Shop! There are so many wonderful animals waiting for a second chance. Shout it from the rooftops and never stop promoting adoption.

🔸Microchip Your Pets: This is a small, easy & afforadble step that can help you be reunited with your missing pet. Some pets are reunited months later because they were microchipped.

🔸Be a responsible pet owner by providing your pets with training, mental stimulation, and physical activity. Spread this information with friends & family that get a new pet. A pet whose basic needs are met is less likely to end up in a situation where they need another home, or where they are struggling to fit into their environment.

Apart from the expected mental & physical stimulation that all pets require regardless of the situation, professional help from trainers & behaviourists should be seen as part of the integration process and not as a last resort. Just like we would seek professional assistance for a child in need, it is our responsibility to make use of those options when integrating a new pet into a household.

🔸Support animal welfare by volunteering, fostering, adopting or donating to local shelters and rescue organizations. Your support helps us to continue to help more dogs & cats in need.

If you would like to find out more about African Tails or to sign up to volunteer or foster, you can contact us on 021 510 7360 / [email protected]

To donate, please follow- https://africantails.co.za/donation/ or to find out what goods we currently need, please email [email protected]

Thank you for the support! 🙏🐾

UPDATE: FOSTER FOUND 🙏🙏🙏

🚨 Urgent Foster needed for this sweet girl 🚨

Please share or reach out if you can help - As is often the case, we’re short on time to find a solution.

This girl was rescued in Mitchells Plain while she was scavenging for food. It is clear that she has been bred, however there is no evidence that she currently has puppies that need to drink. So far we have been able to establish that she is friendly and well-mannered. She is good with all people including kids! She seems to be fine with other dogs. Cats are unknown.

She is house - trained and just an overall affectionate and well rounded girl that just needs a CHANCE.

Fostering details- What we provide & what we expect:

African Tails cover all food, bedding, medical expenses, and anything else she needs while in foster care. All we ask is for a safe & loving foster home & for the foster to attend dog adoption days for maximum exposure. To also be able to take the foster dog to a vet if needed or bring her into our office when she is due to be spayed etc.

If you can help please contact us on the below:

📧 Email: [email protected]

Please help us to help her! 🙏

**** If you recognise this dog, please contact us asap on the contact details above.

This is a story of love & loyalty, featuring two exceptional dogs, and the hope to reach a special human/family. 🙏💖

Tiet’s & Flippie 🐕🐕

Tiets (Brown/ginger female) & Flips (Black & Tan male) both belonged to homeless individuals (two separate homes) and they ended up in our care. After failed attempts at finding them foster homes, they ended up staying at the office, and the rest is history…It was never the intention that they became ‘office dogs’, however it is not uncommon for animal welfares to end up with an office animal or two. They became the best of friends. The local community know them well and enjoy them, the fosters, volunteers & all who pop by, just love them. Tiets & flips love all the attention and spoils. They enjoy having us around every day & they have their routine as they sit & wait for treats or lay at our feet. They are so loving and also so protective.

You may think, but then why try and find them a home? Well, this has been a VERY difficult decision & it has not been taken lightly. We have reached out in the past with no luck but we thought we would give it another go. The reason we want to try and find them a home (together) is because they are now seniors & they deserve even more TLC. They get the best food and medical care that we can give them, but they are alone at night & Flippie has also developed fear of the thunder. We really, really want them to have a gentle place to grow old. They deserve the best possible retirement home with soft dog beds inside the house and humans that are there to notice if they get scared at night. As they get older, it is even more important to keep a close eye on any possible changes in health.

We want to know that they are always safe and secure. They love going out for walks & to the beach and we would love for them to have more of that.
We ourselves would take them in a HEARTBEAT but it just so happens that each of us have dogs with ‘special needs’. 🙃

They are well trained - They walk right next to us when they are taken on walks, so they can be safely walked off-leash in an area that allows that. They are so well-natured and so protective of their humans. They deserve those passing-by ear scratches. They deserve regular evening walks & beach visits, and a sneaky dessert snack in the kitchen when dinner is done!

They are around 10 years old (you would never say, they look & act like 6/7 years old), they are in good health. Tiets is the leader and Flippie follows her lead. They are great with other (friendly) dogs, but they do chase cats so cats are a no go. Flippie is addicted to head scratches, and when you start, he will gently nose bump or paw you for more! All the kids that have visited the office have stood scratching him while he stands dead still enjoying every minute. He is such a gentle and soft natured boy. Tiets is curious and excited about everyone & everything. She is such a sweetheart and a loyal protector & leader.

If you decide to reach out & you can give them the home they deserve, we are willing to contribute to any medical expenses (within reason), and to continue to supply their food. Ideally, we would want a family willing to cover their costs, but we are happy to contribute as we know that some might be nervous about taking on two ‘senior’ dogs.

Our ask? A great home, together. A forever home to grow older, wiser and eventually leave this world knowing what a real family & home environment feels like. We would also love to visit them & have them visit us and even spend some days at the office if possible. - We cannot imagine not seeing them! We know that there is a cape-based family who wants these absolute beauties in their home.

👉 Please reach out if you are that special home! You can contact us on - [email protected]

Giant thank you to Emily from Fur'tos for capturing these beautiful pictures of them. 😍

And thank you to Kim Stephens for helping us find the words. 🥹

🐈 Happy International Cat Day! 🐈‍⬛

In celebration of our feline friends, we’re shining a spotlight on some of our long-standing cats who are still patiently waiting for their forever homes. These beautiful cats have so much love to give and are ready to make your life a little more purr-fect! ❤️

Here are some fun facts about cats:

🐱 Cats and humans share nearly identical sections of the brain that control emotions. They truly get us!

🐱 Whiskers are their superpowers! Cats use them to gauge if they can fit through tight spots.

🐱 Cats spend about 1/3 of their lives grooming themselves. Some might think they're a little OCD, but at least they're clean ;)

🐱 They love to talk! Cats can make over 100 different sounds – which one is your favorite?

NB: Remember, adopting a bonded pair can make a world of difference. These cats comfort and support each other, and they'll thrive best when they can stay together in their new home.

Starting out life on the dusty streets of Du Noon township in the city of Cape Town, African Tails was born in 2006 after the founders saw it was raining with unwanted, neglected and abused cats and dogs here.

Twelve years later, African Tails has since worked in many other townships up and down the Western Cape that have the same issues, and has since sterilised 11,000 animals.

14,400 --> The approximate total number of unwanted animals African Tails have helped to prevent from being born (based on each female having an average of 100 babies).

Everyone at African Tails is bound by their love for the uniquely African dog, known as Canis Africanis, frequently found in rural areas and on the streets of South Africa's informal settlements. This unique breed of dog, is known to be very robust, low on vet bills and extremely loyal and loving.
