After a massive storm last night we are blessed with a beautiful day in Cape Town today. We hope the weather allows you to cycle this weekend. Stay Wider of the Rider sends out regular communication via the media asking motorists to share the road and to be cautious when approaching cyclists. There is no quick fix so we are continiously flooding other road users with safety tips and information in order to become more aware of how vulnerable cyclists are on the road.

If you are cycling along popular routes, please be mindful to stay single file and to obey the rules of the road.

We are asking other road users to respect us so please let’s do the same.

Please try not to cycle alone especially early mornings or in the evenings. Pedal Power Association arranges social rides on Saturday mornings and anyone is welcome to join. One social group starts 7h00 from Vida E Caffe Palmyra Junction, Claremont and will be doing a 75 km route which will include a Red Hill climb and another at 7h30 from the PPA office in Mowbray doing a 66km route that includes Boyes Drive. If you are looking for a group to join in other provinces send us a message.

📅 This iconic event, scheduled for 22 September 2024, offers riders the chance to traverse a breathtaking 100km journey from Uniondale to Knysna. ⁣

Along the way, participants pedal through the historic Prince Alfred’s Pass and traverse a diverse range of biomes, from the rugged beauty of the Karoo through lush river valleys to the famous Knysna forest near the coast. But, not before an epic evening of pure Karoo hospitality in Uniondale…⁣

The pre-event festivities as well as the 100km adventure (and the logistical challenge of your support crew meeting you in Knysna) is but one part of why riders (of all fitness levels) return to this event year after year.

PPA Memberships have now been formally opened for the 2024 / 2025 financial year. There are some great deals available when you renew your membership or join up. We have kept the fees as low as possible as we understand the economic pressures that many of us face.

The PPA is also working very hard to bring about the changes our members want to see and to remain relevant in an ever-shifting world. To this end, we have some exciting new events on the cards for members as well as focussing on the youth through our school programs, all with the aim of growing cycling in South Africa.

We really do value our member's (existing and new) annual membership contribution. It allows us to keep doing the ‘’unseen and sometimes complex’’ advocacy work to help bring about safer roads and more opportunities to hold fun and safe events that are more convenient to many of our members. Some of this does take time, but we remain committed to promoting cycling and the interests of all cyclists Nationally.

You also have the opportunity again to make a voluntary contribution towards supporting our Bike4All and Safe Cycling initiatives. The voluntary contributions is R50 for each of these worthy campaigns.

We believe that affordable, reliable and safe transport should be part of our democratic freedom in South Africa. A bicycle is a key element to those freedoms. The freedom to get to school and back, to get to that job interview and hopefully the freedom to sustainable earning opportunities.

So to celebrate the bike in the context of Freedom Day, we’d love all who can to join our Stay Wider of the Rider team on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟳 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 at 07h00 at the PPA Office for a 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲.

Our weekly 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀 will also take place on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟳 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 at 07h00 from the PPA Office. All three groups will join the Freedom Day Awareness Ride, thereafter the groups will extend their ride for a longer distance. This week is the final ride for the Short Ride before the Winter break.

Join our Stay Wider of the Rider team on 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝟮𝟳 𝗔𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 at 07h00 for a 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗼𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗲.

The group will leave the PPA Office and ride to Langa and back where coffee will be waiting. A support vehicle and bike marshals will ride with the group and all road rules will apply.

The Lions Club’s of Uniondale and Knysna invite you to enter the 2024 Lions Karoo to Coast MTB Challenge that takes place on Sunday, 22 September 2024.

The event welcomes riders with Mountain Bikes, Tandem Bikes, E-Bikes and Gravel Bikes to take part in the 100km challenge from Uniondale to Knysna, via the Prince Alfred Pass.
