When growing food in containers it’s important that each type of veg has enough volume of compost / potting mix to grow productively. As the potting mix contains both the food and water plants need, hungry - or thirsty - vegetables need a larger volume of soil to grow well.

For example, one tomato plant needs at least 10 litres of soil, often best in 20 litres of soil. While a squash plant usually needs 40 or 50 litres.

French, runner and broad beans on the other hand are less hungry. I regularly grow 12 beans in a 50 litre container - ie about 4 litres of soil per bean. Normally this works fine.

However, I’ve noticed that the beans pictured here are growing well but wilting on hot days (despite daily watering). On closer inspection I see that the container is not as full of compost as it should be - probably about 2/3 full or 30 litres. The smaller volume means it is drying out faster. To resolve this, I will top up the container with compost. This will hold additional water to hopefully sustain the beans for a full 24 hours.

Although the depth of container is sometimes important (particularly for some root veg), the volume of soil is normally the key factor. Many veg will grow happily in shallow containers as long as each plant has access to a large enough volume of soil.
