Reddam House Umhlanga turns 21! 🎂✨💙💛
From its humble beginnings as Umhlanga College, nestled amongst the surrounding sugarcane fields, Reddam House Umhlanga has officially come of age. Yesterday, we celebrated our 21st with a Reddam Reunion Day assembly held in our enormous Muir Auditorium. Now with well over a 1000 students from Stage 1 to Grade 12, we celebrated the journey of growth and learning that has made us who we are today. As a school that can compete against the best on the sports field and on the stage, and with our consistently exceptional academic results, we love the all-rounder we have become.
Highlights of our 21st celebration included a moving rendition of Circle of Life by our combined Prep and College Choirs, followed by a tree planting ceremony on our newly named Founders Lane. Two of our Stage 2s and our Matric Representatives, Jess Pooler and Walther de Bruin, were there to share in the celebration of the two trees donated by the ELS and the Matric group of 2024.
Happy birthday Reddam House Umhlanga! Here’s to the next 21!

The JP hockey players had an eventful week, seeing our Grade 1 and 2 hockey players competing in our mini hockey festival on Friday afternoon where much fun was had by all. There was so much excitement around the afternoon, everyone involved thoroughly enjoyed themselves. ✨
The Grade 3s had a tough Saturday morning, starting their first games at 7.30 in the morning. The boys and girls persevered through the heat and were able to showcase their improving skills which they work on so tirelessly throughout the week. 🙌
Our crosscountry runners endured a tough course at Redwood last week. They had to dig deep to achieve their desired results and goals.👟
The hockey boys and girls produced good results again. They continue to train hard to keep meeting their opponents week after week.
The girls went and played DGC, unfortunately we lost all the games, however the girls learnt a lot and enjoyed playing against different opposition.

Grade 10 Ndlela update🏕️
Group 3:
With enthusiasm and resolute spirits, the students departed from Bushwillow camp, making their way to base camp — affectionately known as ‘home.’
They embarked on a demanding 19km trek, navigating steep inclines and rugged terrain. However, the journey was brightened by stunning vistas and sunny weather. While it was a hot day, they all kept hydrated and had a comedown with sprinkler shower when they arrived at Shawswood.
Through teamwork, solid leadership and unwavering determination, they reached base camp, set up their tents in the orange orchard, and entered their period of solitude.
Equipped with heartfelt family letters and a (very!) modest supply of food, they now spend this time in reflection, contemplating their journey, their lives, and their loved ones.
Grade 10 Ndlela update 🏕️:
Group 2: Isolation
After 24 hours of isolation, surviving on rations of Provitas, cheese, and an orange, the group emerged with assured, heartfelt smiles, confident that they had successfully accomplished yet another challenge laid before them.
Armed with their response letters to their loved ones and future selves, the group returned from isolation and went into a brief debrief with Rod before being led into the dining area for what was arguably the best-tasting hamburger ever, accompanied by potato salad and a few glasses of Coke.
Following lunch, the group enjoyed the rest of the afternoon as free time. Some played in the sprinklers, a welcome relief from the hot sun, while others retreated to shadier spots to catch up on isolation stories.
The evening debrief began with a few rounds of “Guess the Song and Artist,” and the main discussion centered around “being a hero in the small things.” The group reflected on the key lessons they had learned about themselves during the trip. They had pushed their boundaries, done exceptionally well, and gained a deeper understanding of those less fortunate than themselves.
With the activities day ahead, the group settled in for the night, looking forward to a well-deserved night’s sleep.
Grade 10 Ndlela Update🏕️
Group 1: Day 7 Activites day
Today's word of fhe day was "team work" and "adaptability". The students tested their abilities to adapt to situations and how to work effectively as a team to accomplish a common goal.
This was achieved by completing a number of team building activities such as A frames, half pipe, obstacle courses and bridge building.
The students were challenged as they had to collaborate and share different ideas, as well as effectively communicate instructions. Each student showed their own style of unique leadership and learnt alot about effective communication and leadership. The day ended with a positive debrief, reiterating the idea that anyone can lead.
The students look forward to their work day tomorrow.
Grade 10 Ndlela update🏕️:
Group 3: Hike to Patozi
Yesterday group 3 set out on the first of their four days of hiking with the transit from base camp to Patozi.
The group mantained a steady pace as they navigated their way through the forest. There were some strong debates over when to rest and which route to take during the hike. These were valuable lessons on team work and conflict management. Four and a half hours of walking later they arrived at Pitozi, our overnight stop. This was the first time for some of our students sleeping in the bush and there was a sense of excitement and uncertainty in the air.
Day 4 tested the group both physically and mentally. Our student leaders had their hands full in keeping the group on the right path but also keeping their spirits up. After a long day on the road there were some tired bodies.
Grade 10 Ndela Update🏕️
Group 2: Potozi to Bushwillow
Today’s word of the day was “attitude”. After a chilly night, Group 2 headed out of Potozi Forest and hit the road towards Bushwillow at the foot of Mt. Gilboa.
The day proved challenging. Spirits were high at the start, but as the day wore on and the sun beat down a little stronger, energy levels steadily dropped, and our brisk walk turned into a gentle trudge. Despite this, the group stayed positive and kept going.
There was huge relief upon seeing the sign for Bushwillow, only to realize that the driveway was a 1.2 km hill. On the verge of a sense of humor failure, the group managed to bounced back after a period of solitude, especially once their tents were set up on the lawn.
Tonight, the group will sleep well after a long day in the sun. As night fell, the mist rolled in, and although a gentle rain followed, it did not dampen the group's spirits. There is much excitement for our hike up Mt. Gilboa tomorrow!
Grade 10 Ndlela Update🏕️
Group 1: Mount Gilboa Hike
After a restful night, Group 1 began their day, knowing a tough challenge was ahead of them: submitting Mount Gilboa.
The hike was both physically and mentally demanding, a steep climb to KZN's second highest peak. The group showed impressive perseverance and character, tackling the tough climb and supporting each other through the challenge.
From the base, the summit seemed out of reach, but reaching the top brought a sense of pride as they enjoyed lunch and reflected on their achievement. The descent was just as difficult, requiring intense focus and mental strength.
Returning to camp, the group enjoyed some reflection time and their first shower. A few games of uno and mafia were enjoyed by torch light before the group turned in for the night.
What a week for our soccer teams - they have done us proud!
Significantly, our Girls 1st XI beat DGC 4-2 and then continued their winning streak with a 3-0 victory over Felixton 1st XI.
Our Boys 1st XI faced formidable opposition this week and held both Glenwood 1st XI and Clifton 1st XI to goalless draws.

The Grade 10s are well and fully settled in their campsites as they navigate the early days of the Ndlela Outdoor Challenge 🏕️🥾✨
After spending the night at Potosi, everyone was geared up for a new day full of challenges and activities!
Their days have been filled with exciting activities like obstacle courses, bridge-building, and creating bamboo stilts, along with various team-building games. The focus was on adaptability and teamwork, skills that will be essential for the rest of the camp.
Students also embraced the theme of “Gratitude,” engaging in tasks like clearing orchards and raking leaves to learn the value of hard work. Their efforts were rewarded with a celebratory braai broodjie feast, teaching the importance of wise choices and appreciating their efforts.
