SPEAKER: Ms Zeenat Parker

Zeenat Parker Founder and CEO, Warriors of Hope With 25 years of experience as a dedicated teacher, Zeenat has always been driven by a passion for empowering others. While continuing to teach, Zeenat ventured into entrepreneurship, balancing business ownership with further education. Notably, she completed a 5-year part-time Quranic studies program and a life coaching course, expanding her ski l set and spiritual growth. In 2012, Zeenat Parker founded Warriors of Hope, a three-tiered organization dedicated to education, life ski ls development, and menstrual health support. Under her leadership, Warriors of Hope has grown into a beacon of hope for countless individuals.
For the past decade, she has served as a chaplain at a children's hospital, providing emotional and spiritual support to paliative care patients and their families. This experience has deepened her understanding of human resilience and the importance of hope. In 2020 she had the opportunity to visit hospitals in the United Kingdom to engage with Chaplains internationaly.

Through her remarkable journey, one constant has remained: a commitment to inspiring and uplifting others. Zeenat’s unique blend of teaching, business acumen, spiritual growth, and chaplaincy experience has equipped her to lead Warriors of Hope in making a lasting impact." Committed to continuous learning and self-improvement, she has attended numerous masterclasses and programs to enhance her ski ls and knowledge.

Notably, she completed a mindfulness program, a train-the-trainer program, and a grief counseling certification, enabling her to support bereaved families with compassion and expertise.

Recently, she achieved accreditation as an International Mental Health First Aider, further solidifying her ability to provide critical support. This expertise has also enabled Warriors of Hope to launch its first non-profit Mental Health helpline, a milestone moment in the organization's history.

Through her dedication to personal growth and professional development, Warriors of Hope has become a beacon of hope for those seeking support, guidance, and empowerment.

I am a Registered Nurse, who has been employed at Groote Schuur Hospital for more than 26 years as an Oncology Specialist Nurse. I retired from GSH in 2019. My nursing career started in 1979. The knowledge, skills, and experiences throughout my career, cemented the foundation and love for nursing and sparked a keen interest in Oncology nursing. In the latter part of my career, I mainly focused on the comprehensive and supportive healthcare needs of patients with breast disease and breast cancer.

FACILITATOR: Dr Hafiz Reedwaan Ismail

Born and raised in District 6 until I was forcefully moved to Gatesville on the Cape Flats during the Apartheid era. Matriculated at Rylands High School and completed the memorization of the Quran under the tutelage of Imam Shamsudien Ebrahim who was the Imam at Addison Road Masjid in Slat River. Completed the Arabic language course at the King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. Completed the BA Hons. HDE, MPhil (Applied Linguistics and DTech (Tourism) at the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology respectively.

Dr Hafiz Reedwaan Ismail taught at Cravenby secondary school and thereafter started his tourism guiding business. He is also the founding trustee of the Hafiz Academy & Quran Literacy Trust. The Hafiz Academy produced a number of publications of which the Colour Coded Quran and Translation Colour Coded Quran is currently circulated globally. The Hafiz Academy also offers a number of online courses – www.hafizacademy.org

Dr Hafiz Reedwaan Ismail also lectured at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and is currently an Educator / Researcher at the Islamia College of Cape Town.

Currently, Dr Hafiz Reedwaan Ismail is involved in the following projects:

TOPIC: Introduction to WiZmed

SPEAKERS:

Ashraf Moosa is a fifth-year medical student at the University of Cape Town, pursuing an intercalated MBChB degree. He holds a BMedSc Hons in Neuroscience and Physiology, completed with First Class Honours in 2022. Alongside his academic pursuits, Ashraf is the co-founder of WiZmed, a medical supplies company dedicated to making quality medical equipment accessible and affordable. Under his leadership, WiZmed has achieved milestones such as becoming a 3M Authorised Distributor and launching a popular line of in-house designed medical scrubs. His future ambitions include leveraging digital solutions to improve healthcare delivery and enhance patient care. Outside of his professional and academic commitments, Ashraf is an avid runner and cyclist.

Waheed Amanjee is an aspiring clinician-scientist-entrepreneur dedicated to advancing healthcare and research in Africa. Currently in his fourth year of medical studies at the University of Cape Town, he holds an intercalated BMedSci (Hons) in Bioinformatics (Cum Laude). Waheed is a co-founder and 2024 President of the African Research Society, a student-run NPO promoting inclusive African-centric research. Notable achievements including successfully hosting Nobel Laureate speakers and pioneering opportunities for students to get involved in research.

As a co-founder of WiZmed, he channels his passion for entrepreneurship to democratize access to medical equipment for students, of which now has grown to become South Africa’s leading Littmann distributor, Alhamdulillah. As a UCT Global Surgery Research Fellow and member of the Reach Alliance, his research focuses on the unhoused crisis in the Western Cape. In his spare time, he enjoys experimenting in the kitchen and volunteering at the Eskom Expo. Waheed’s goal is to blend his passions for medicine, research, and entrepreneurship to contribute meaningfully to Africa’s development, inshaAllah.

TOPIC: Navigating University as a Muslim Student - Preserving Identity, Prioritizing Faith (Student Session)

SPEAKER: Aalima Taahira Patel Saloojee
As a dedicated and passionate individual, Taahira Patel-Saloojee has defied conventional paths to achieve her goals. Despite not completing traditional schooling, she pursued Islamic studies and became an Aalima, teaching students of all ages for 15 years. She also acquired skills in graphic design and IT, and later completed her matric at 30. Currently, she is a first-year student in Emergency Medical Care (paramedic) program.

Taahira's diverse background is complemented by her physical pursuits, including a black belt in karate, running, swimming, and gym enthusiasts. Her true passion lies in empowering women and girls, particularly Muslim females, to embrace their identity and modesty while succeeding in their endeavors.

Taahira currently teaches a monthly online Tafseer class exclusively for ladies, sharing her knowledge and insights into the Quran's teachings.

As a public speaker, Taahira has graced various radio and TV stations, and serves as a PR representative for a humanitarian organization. Recently, she joined the Students of the Islamic Medical Association (SIMASA) as a marketing and fundraising representative.

Taahira's remarkable journey and achievements make her an inspiration to many. Her dedication to healthcare, education, and empowerment is a testament to her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact.

This presentation will be be done by Badr Dramat and Maryam Badsha, the chairperson and vice chairperson of SIMASA Tygerberg. We are currently in MBChB IV at Stellenbosch University. Our journey with IMASA started in 2022 when we volunteered at an elderly screening program, and were moved by the impact we made just by showing a little kindness and listening to their concerns.

We are both passionate about helping others and giving back to those around us. This is evident in our dedication and Involvement in societies such as the MSA and other outreach projects.

We are grateful for this opportunity to share our experiences and hopefully encourage others to get involved with this wonderful initiative.

*SPEAKER:* Dr Zara Ismail is a registered dental practitioner under the health professions council of South Africa and provides quality healthcare to all patients. Born and raised in Kwa-Zulu Natal, she discovered her passion for health care early on, inspired by engaging within communities as a school volunteer. Several years later, she was able to grow on this platform of cultural enrichment and develop this naturally into her professional career. She pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of the Western Cape, where she excelled academically. She is a member of the Golden Key Academic Achievers International Society and has also annually been placed on the Dean’s merit list. Whilst a student, she was a member of the ELP which advocates for youth empowering sustainable development goals and enhancement of communities. Whilst also being a participant of the Japan-Asahi Exchange Programme and the International Bridging the Gap course that collaborated worldwide health goals. Driven by her desire to serve her community she completed her degree with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and earned the best achiever in Endodontics within her class of 2023.

She is currently completing her community service year at Parys District Hospital in the Free State, where she is applying the invaluable experience gained as a student in managing a diverse range of oral health conditions and developing strong patient relationships. Dr Ismail believes in treating each patient as a whole person, not just addressing their oral health care needs but also their holistic state of health and well-being. She values building trusting relationships with her patients and colleagues based on mutual respect and empathy. Thereby, cultivating interdisciplinary health promotion. Hence, she believes that by using the IMASA platform she can engage students in expanding their knowledge in the context of our faith in Islam and personal growth.
