Ataraxia Wines

Ataraxia Wines

Our wines are handcrafted to reflect the origin and sense of place that this unique location offers,

Ataraxia was founded in 2004 by husband and wife team, Kevin and Hanli Grant, in partnership with a few friends, when they purchased 50 hectares of prime vineyard land behind the small coastal village of Hermanus. The landscape in which Ataraxia is situated is unique, lying as it does on the most elevated section of the Hemel-en-Aarde area. Nestled on this commanding rise beneath the soaring Babyl

Our story is one of soils. We are expressing the essence of the land and capturing that in each bottle. When you consider our slice of earth, no one else in the world has our unique combination of soils, slopes, altitude, and even the quality of sunlight. This uniqueness allows us to craft uniquely interesting terroir-driven wines. It is our job to understand our terroir and capture it through the correct choice of grape cultivar, the vehicle to express our soil in a bottle!

We're delighted that Kevin Grant of Ataraxia Wines will be over with us this month! Hailing from Blantyre, Malawi, Kevin is a master of making expressive, cool climate wines. The Ataraxia vineyards are situated in Hemel en Aarde, within the Walker Bay wine region. Hemel-en-Aarde lies west of Cape Agulhas, Africa’s southernmost tip. Orientated on an east/west axis it is approximately 35 kilometres long and covers some of the most dramatically beautiful terrain in the Western Cape. With its close proximity to the South Atlantic Ocean, the climate is particularly mild, ideal for growing cooler-climate loving grapes.

The action moves to the cellar as we head into towards the finish line of harvest 2024.🍷

Meticulous sorting of grapes, ever so gentle pressing and pump overs is fundamental to each and every bottle of wine that eventually leave our cellar.🍇

A rewarding cold beer is always a welcome replenishment after a hard day’s work for the cellar team!🍻

Many hands make light work. A saying we all know, and it rings the truest during the harvest hustle.🍷

The cellar becomes a cosmopolitan place with our Austrian harvest interns, Rene Dietrich and Mathias Ettenauer. A wonderful reminder that the timeless wine industry knows no bounds.

Meticulous precision.
We are excited for our first block of Pinot noir 2024 heading towards the cellar. 🍇

Meticulous precision.
We are excited for our first block of Pinot noir 2024 heading towards the cellar.

Our harvest team takes great care to pick only the healthiest bunches.

Our wines are born in the vineyard, nurtured by our ancient soils, the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge’s climate and the masterfully crafted in the cellar by our impresario Kevin and his cellar team.

Today is a cause for celebrations!

Today is a cause for celebrations!

Our 20th harvest kicks off on a picture perfect Hemel-en-Aarde Vallei day.

Only appropriate that we started with one of our organically grown Chardonnay blocks.

We are so excited, more so because of our romance with the soil, the grapes and the creative process seems to deepen with each passing harvest. Here’s to many more!

Join us in celebrating this special occasion!
