Tom Bowen knew his stuff...

Did you know? Beetroot is gaining popularity as a performance enhancer for athletes. It's consumed in various forms like juice, powder, or whole.

Tom Bowen recommended beetroot to his clients. He saw thousands of clients in Geelong (VIC) and worked with football and other sporting clubs from the 1960s-1980s. His recommendation was two slices of raw beetroot or a quarter of a cup of beetroot juice daily as a kidney tonic.

Studies show it can improve performance, particularly in endurance sports, by extending time to exhaustion and covering more distance. Benefits are mostly seen in recreational athletes, not elites or sedentary individuals. Beetroot's high nitrate content helps by dilating blood vessels and delivering oxygen to muscles efficiently.

Possible downsides include red urine and upset stomachs. While beetroot can give a small performance boost, maintaining a balanced diet and proper training is crucial.

It is the pauses between "moves" that sets Bowen apart, giving the body time to register the healing about to occur. As always I jusr have to add that Bowen is one of the most powerful modalities I've come across. It never ceases to astound me in sessions with clients.

The pauses in Bowen Therapy are 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙚𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙘.

They allow us to relax and get into our parasympathetic state where healing can occur.

A little bit of my favourite topic....anatomy! 😍

The deltoid muscle is a triangular-shaped muscle located in the shoulder joint. It is composed of three distinct fiber groups: the anterior (front), middle (central), and posterior (rear) deltoid heads.

📍 Origin:
The anterior deltoid head originates from the lateral third of the clavicle. The middle deltoid head originates from the acromion process of the scapula. Lastly, the posterior deltoid head originates from the spine of the scapula.

💪 Insertion:
All three deltoid heads converge to form a single tendon that attaches to the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus bone.

🤜 Actions:
The primary function of the deltoid muscle is to provide great mobility and stability to the shoulder joint. It performs several key actions:

1️⃣ Shoulder Abduction: The deltoid muscle initiates and assists in raising the arm outwards from the body, allowing us to perform movements like star jumps or lifting objects to the side.

2️⃣ Shoulder Flexion: The anterior deltoid head facilitates bringing the arm forward, to reach for something in front of you.

3️⃣ Shoulder Extension: The posterior deltoid head assists in pulling the arm backwards, such as during rowing exercises.

4️⃣ Shoulder External Rotation: The posterior deltoid head aids in rotating the shoulder outwards, like when throwing a ball

5️⃣ Shoulder Internal Rotation: The anterior deltoid head contributes to rotating the shoulder inwards, such as during activities like throwing a punch.

Something I've always said....taking care of yourself is a necessity not a luxury. Have Bowen regularly even when you're feeling great.

Don't wait until you're sick/sore/stressed/injured for Bowen Therapy. Preventative healthcare can nip things in the bud before they become bigger issues.

A couple of weeks ago I posted that I had started reading Gabor Matè's book - When the body says no - the hidden cost of stress. I am just about finished reading it and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Written with compassion, wisdom and clarity, this book is an intelligent exploration of the relationship between stress and disease. Something we should all read about....whether in good health or not.

Bowen therapy is perhaps one of the most powerful modalities I work with. It's benefits within a very short space of time are almost magical. If you suffer from any pain, anxiety, muscular or postural issues, physiologial symptoms....Bowen is non-invasive, gentle and phenomenal. It's great for kids and cancer patients experience enormous relief from their chemo and radiation side effects.
