We hope nobody needs to be scanned on Saturday when the Springboks play, but if they do, the Butterfly Network, Inc handheld ultrasound will be there for at it's best. Thank you Mr First Aid (Pty)LTD for making it happen.
The Butterfly Network, Inc handheld ultrasound probe has an automatic bladder volume calculator. Every reading that should be thinking “say that again?”. So, let’s say that again! In a single sweep, the + can automatically calculate the bladder volume (and provide a 3D graphic of one’s patient’s actual bladder) in a few seconds. Imagine being able to perform a safe and accurate post-operative balder retention assessment in your rooms.
For all the naysayers, take a look at the video below.

“The Wits Students Surgical Society was founded in 2010 with the assistance of the Department of Surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand, this society is a platform for medical students and aspiring medical specialists in the art and science of surgery. We are currently a sub-committee of the Wits MSC and a member of SASSIT. We are passionate about the world of surgery, and we work closely with the Wits Surgery Department to ensure that we always deliver enriching experiences. We further enjoy collaborating with the other medical societies at Wits, such as the Physician and Pathology Society.
The Wits Students’ Surgical Society is divided into five different portfolios namely skills, events, outreach, public relations, and most recently research. Our skills workshops are highly anticipated and range from basic suturing skills to more niche ones like anastomosis, intercostal drain insertion, and laparoscopy. Our events committee actively works to provide wits medical students with events, activities, and experiences that will enlighten and develop them as they pursue careers in surgery. These events are annual and include lecture series and a range of panel discussions which provides a platform for relationships to develop between students and surgeons. Our outreach is primarily involved with nearby schools, the Smile Foundation, and Surgeons for Little Lives. In addition, some of the activities we host include blood, blanket, women, and easter egg drives. We also visit various children and women’s shelters in Johannesburg.
We aim to help guide, explore, and further the education of those students who choose to join us as members or as attendees at our various events. We strive to provide a learning platform that goes beyond the classroom and medical curriculum.”

A snippet from JA Slabbert in SAMJ in 2012 still remains as relevant, if not more so in 2024:
“Reviewing the management of sudden cardiac arrest on the football field, Kramer et et al. made recommendations for the on-field emergency management of these cases. While some international sports governing bodies, for example FIFA, have started to introduce these measures, it has not become common practice in South African schools, universities, clubs and institutions dealing with young athletes.
We are therefore of the opinion that most young South African athletes practise and participate in sport without adequate contingency plans in place that will ensure early recognition of cardiac arrest, initiation of immediate chest compressions, and defibrillation within 3 - 5 minutes.”
ZEBRA MEDICAL have the solution – CellAED – the world’s first handheld, smart, personal AED.

Mental health is a critical component of overall well-being, particularly for healthcare practitioners (HCPs) who are constantly exposed to high-stress environments. The demanding nature of the medical profession, coupled with the emotional burden of patient care, can significantly impact the mental health of HCPs. Ensuring mental well-being is not only crucial for the practitioners themselves but also essential for the provision of high-quality patient care.
