The Transvaal and eSwatini Borders Grand Temple held its Annual Grand Session in Nelspruit from 14-17 December 2023 under the theme “Don’t give up!” - Hebrews 39-40.

Greetings, Brothers and Sisters! It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of the Past GTS of the NORTHERN GRAND TEMPLE,

Independent Order of True Templars (I.O.T.T.) tribute of the late Bro Rev Newman Sazi Lukhele, Past Grand True Templar (P.G.T.T.) of the Transvaal and Swaziland Borders Grand Temple.

Bro Rev N.S Lukhele, affectionately known as 'Mkhulu' was a formidable character within the Order of True Templars, particularly within the Transvaal and Swaziland Borders Grand Temple.

Having served in the following offices within the Order:

1. Grand True Vice Templar (G.T.V.T)for much of the years between the 70s and 80s.

Here he demonstrated his ability to maintain order of the Grand Session, in charge of the Inner and Outer Guards, and the Marshalls, whilst supporting the GTT in the sacred rituals of the Order. Early accounts from members those days illustrate what a diligent servant he was. Strict, precise and slow to react. In his autobiography, he confesses that this was one office he particularly enjoyed.

2. Grand True Counselor (G.T.Co). 1989-1993

The late 80s and early 90s saw Bro Rev N.S Lukhele ascend to the office of Grand True Counselor. Here he was tasked with the important role of supporting the GTT (Bro. T.L.T Msi) in fulfilling his duties within the Grand Temple.

Bro Rev N.S Lukhele was a devoted Methodist, having been an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament for the Methodist Church of Southern Africa since 1962.

As a true Servant of God, the Rev Lukhele was elected to the office of Bishop for the Highveld and Eswatini District, the first Black person to occupy this high position within the District.

In 2000, at the 53rd Annual Grand Session held in Bushbuckridge, Bro Rev N.S Lukhele was elected to the Highest Office of the Grand Temple, to be Grand True Templar (G.T.T.) a position he held till he retired in 2011.

During his tenure as G.T.T. the following was achieved:

- Expansion into the Republic of Mozambique
- Establishment of Summits
- Comprehensive synergy of Youth and Juvenile Departments
- 60th Anniversary of the Grand Temple
- Repositioning the Order in the 21st Century
- Healthy Financial Records

At the 33rd Qadrennial Right Worthy Session held in Botswana in 2010, Bro Rev Lukhele was appointed as a Commissioner of the Heritage, History and Archives Commission. Here he was tasked with the difficult task of compiling the IOTTs history and heritage from its establishment in 1875 to date. This task culminated to the publication of two books released in 2013 and 2020. Both publications independently written, researched and edited by Bro Rev Lukhele.

True to his Temperance conviction, he remained a True, Grand and Worthy Templar to the end.

He remains the Past G.T.T of our Grand Temple, an honorable seat he took pride in.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Lukhele, Lushaba and Kubayi family as they mourn the untimely death of Bro Rev Lukhele.

A Gentleman. A Man of God. A True Templar to the end!
