⚠️MATERNAL MENTAL HEALTH WEEK 2019

This week we will be taking some time to look at MUMS and specifically their well-being.

Kick starting with the post below. ‘Everyone wants to hold the baby, but who holds the mum?’ Powerful.

Becoming a mother, for the first time especially, but also after every subsequent baby, is a huge transition for a woman. Her life will never look quite the same again each time.

Inundated with visitors, trying to look like she’s on top of things, trying to get to know her new bundle, figuring out feeding, trying to keep the rest of the home running, smiling for people who come in the door, thinking of conversation, trying to have enough in the tank emotionally for her new baby, her partner, any other children, all while her body is exhausted and healing. It’s no wonder a mum’s emotional tank can run so low.

When you visit a mum, make HER a cup of tea. Ask her how SHE is, not just the baby. Give her a hug. Look into HER face and tell her how wonderful she is. Bring some cake or a treat for her. Don’t overstay your welcome, she will be exhausted no matter what she says! Bring dinner for her and her family. Bring a card saying ‘well done’. Bring flowers. If you are a close friend or close family member, offer to help around the house if she would find that a blessing (people vary, some might not but some would jump at the chance). Hang out her washing. Wash up. Encourage her to sit while you look after HER for half an hour. Come ready to bless her and serve her, not just to stare at this new babe.

New life is truly miraculous, but so is the one who brought it into being. The Mum. The one who so often gets missed in the aftermath.

The Birth of Indigo June - A surprise gender home birth 04/04/2019

https://www.facebook.com/23453312784/posts/10158275909507785/

Hey guys! I am so excited to share this REAL and RAW birth story with you today! If you are not comfortable with birth, and seeing birth do not look.

It was early in the morning on March 11th when I got the call that Vanessa was in labor with her second little one. I jumped out of bed and rushed over to her house when I heard how intense things were going. I entered the house to hear loud grounds and when I walked in the room I could see the intensity of the contractions radiating through Vanessa. Her doula, Desiree with sweet doula was there applying counter pressure as the birth tub was getting set up.

Mama labored on her hands and knees and moved to the toilet to labor her sweet baby down before getting into the pool. Once she entered the pool it wasn't long before Indigo began crowning and when Vanessa felt her right there a smile came across her face knowing that she was capable of birthing her daughter the way she wanted. It was a few short pushes later and Indigo's shoulders were out. Vanessa carefully lifted Indigo out of the water and brought her to her chest to finally meet her girl.

Birth is so transformative and incredible. Women are filled with such power and such strength. It is always an honor to be able to witness, document and share these moments

Have you heard of antenatal milk expression?
It’s the act of hand expressing colostrum once or twice daily starting at 36 weeks of pregnancy. Antenatal expression may be encouraged for women:
▪️who have experienced previous low milk supply
▪️who have breast hypoplasia (limited breast development)
▪️with polycystic o***y syndrome
▪️who have had previous breast surgery
▪️who have experienced diabetes in pregnancy (gestational diabetes)
Or for babies:
▪️with a cleft lip and/or palate identified during pregnancy
▪️with congenital conditions such as Down syndrome or cardiac complications
▪️diagnosed with intrauterine growth restriction
▪️who are born prematurely.
Many lactation professionals have reported that women who have done this during pregnancy seem to experience earlier and more abundant milk production after giving birth. You can express colostrum drops into a spoon and then use a small syringe to draw up the milk. The syringe can be frozen and given after baby is born, if supplementation is needed. Please note, if you’re on pelvic rest or have a high risk pregnancy, antenatal milk expression should be avoided and if you have any concerns, please consult with your OB, midwife or lactation consultant first.

Delaying Newborn Baths Boosts Breastfeeding Rates Delaying the initial newborn bath may retain the familiar scent of amniotic fluid for the infant, and normal temperature also is more commonly retained. The result? Higher rates of breastfeeding.
