Last week, the British High Commission Lusaka was delighted to join our Zambian and international partners at the Kenneth Kaunda Peace Training Centre for the closing ceremony of ZAMBATT X.
For the past 10 weeks, UK troops through the British Peace Support Team have been providing pre-deployment training to Zambian Defence Force counterparts ahead of their forthcoming year-long deployment to the UN peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic.
Alongside our US and French partners, the UK has been proud to work with Zambian troops on a range of mission-specific skills, including operation planning, female engagement, and medical training. We are supporting Zambia to play a crucial role in peace support operations across the African continent, working with the United Nations and the African Union.
We know the troops trained under ZAMBATT X will do Zambia proud.
We welcome David Lammy as the new Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Affairs.

The British High Commission in Zambia strongly welcomes the announcement at last week's G7 Leaders Summit of UK funding for the Zambia-Tanzania regional power interconnector.
Partnering with the World Bank and the EU to support African regional electricity transmission and strengthen climate resilience, £15m will contribute to the Zambian side of the Zambia-Tanzania Interconnector as part of a $300m project that will link the Southern and East African Power Pools. Leading with our development partners to invest in energy infrastructure in Zambia will aid the country to access clean energy. This is vital for poverty reduction and economic development.
This investment, alongside a £300,000 contribution for mapping by the British Geological Survey in Angola, will be crucial in supporting the economic development along the length of the Lobito Corridor.
Another great example of 🇬🇧-🇿🇲partnership in action.
Funding commitments show UK as force for global good at G7 Leader Summit The Prime Minister will make the case for a world economy that is more peaceful, stable, and prosperous and for bold reforms to global governance to make it more inclusive and responsive to citizens as he attends the second day of the G7 Leaders Summit in Italy today (Friday 14 June).
The British High Commissioner hosted a celebration of the Official Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III in Lusaka last week. A huge thanks to all our guests, sponsors and partners. We were honoured to have the new Zambian Minister of Justice toast the occasion, along with so many of our partners from present & past governments, business, media, civil society, international organisations and creative industry.
The High Commissioner's full remarks as delivered on Thursday 13 June are below:
Good evening! My wife Debbie and I are delighted to host you at our home, for what is my final official engagement here as British High Commissioner to Zambia.
And on behalf of the whole British High Commission and British Council team, thank you so much for joining us tonight to celebrate the Official Birthday of His Majesty King Charles III.
Because tonight is a celebration. Not just of His Majesty The King, but a chance to celebrate the partnership between Zambia and the United Kingdom and all that we have achieved together. A partnership that has developed over many, many years: from very different beginnings of course, which we must acknowledge; through the 60 years of Zambia’s independence, and to a future where our cooperation will – must - continue to grow and deepen.
And it has been the honour of my lifetime to have shared in the development of some small part of this longstanding relationship.
When I was first appointed High Commissioner, Theresa May was British Prime Minister and Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth was our Head of State. A lot has happened in the world in the five years since. Covid. Conflict. Climate Catastrophes.
Our two nations have experienced political transitions. Our economies have been rocked by global events. We have mourned the deaths of our historic leaders, including of course Dr Kenneth Kaunda who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. He was a regular guest at the Residence on these occasions, well into his 90s, and I am honoured that his children can be with us here tonight.
Through all this change, Zambia and the United Kingdom have stood together. We have worked side-by-side to tackle covid, cholera and climate change. We cooperate on nutrition, health, education, and social protection, so that the most vulnerable in society have the opportunity for a better future. We have supported local businesses, tackled debt, unlocked investment, and facilitated trade, to grow our economies and increase jobs and opportunities for our people. Agriculture, energy, conservation, policing, defence, security, governance, creative industries, scholarships, research, science and technology - I could go on - the UK-Zambia partnership is as broad as it is deep.
And when help is needed, we are there for each other: as now, in the midst of Zambia’s worst drought in a generation, the UK is helping the government to ensure that over six million of Zambia’s most climate-vulnerable citizens are getting the cash support they need to navigate their way through.
Our partnership operates at all levels. Government-to-government, institution-to-institution, and – above all – people-to-people. And it is underpinned by a common set of values, the desire that millions of our citizens share for respect of hard-won democratic rights and freedoms, and mutual respect for each other including our differences. It is incumbent on all of us, particularly those in leadership, to embrace and model these values, which represent the foundation of who we are and what our partnership is all about.
Umuchinshi. Kuzichepesa. Tuleisakamana. Tiyende pamdozi.
Honourable Minister, ladies and gentlemen. It just remains for me to say thank you.
Thank you hugely to all our sponsors tonight: UK businesses investing in Zambia, and Zambian businesses backed by UK investment, all supporting economic growth, job creation and tens of thousands of livelihoods. To our Gold sponsors FQM and Moxico; our Silver sponsors Prudential, Standard Chartered, and Zambia Sugar; and our Bronze sponsors, Kagem Mining, Knight Frank, KPMG, PWC, Diageo and G4S. Thank you.
My enormous thanks too to the whole British High Commission team including our colleagues at the British Council – everyone with whom I have worked over the past five years and made all our achievements possible. You, and the Zambians with whom each of you work, are the pillars of our partnership.
Thank you to my wife, Debbie, and indeed to all the partners of our High Commission staff, who are the army of unsung heroes behind our success. Debbie represented Great Britain at the ice-skating World Championships and had a highly successful career as a businesswomen heading Honda’s European sales operations, before giving that up to join me and our two children Jessica and Benjamin around the world. Many of our spouses have a similar story of sacrifice to share.
And, finally, thank you to everyone here tonight, whether Zambian, British or among our many international partners. I have hugely valued all of your advice, engagement and good cheer, and I know my successor - Sam Waldock for now, and the new High Commissioner when he – or she – arrives, can count on the same.
Thank you and enjoy the rest of the evening. Zikomo kwambili. God Save The King.
