🔽 Spherical Bridge Bearings Vs Pot bearings (part1):
🔸The spherical bridge bearings are with a large rotation capacity more than other common bearings (elastomeric and pot bearings).
🔽 How it works?!
🔸Spherical bridge bearing is a structural bearing, which consists of :
🔸A precision-machined steel component assembly with a spherical concave and convex element in the center.
🔸The surface of the dome is polished to maintain the lowest possible friction, thus allowing rotation by bending and sliding.
🔸The spherical bridge bearing has a high-strength steel body and is designed for high vertical, horizontal and lateral loads, and where large rotational structural displacements need to be accommodated which is difficult for other bearings to work with.
🔸To provide movement capability, the bearings can be combined with flat sliding elements, guides and limiting rings.
🔽 The spherical bearing is composed of :
🔸An upper steel plate,
🔸A lower steel plate,
🔸A convex middle plate,
🔸 And two PTFE plates of different shapes,
🔽 When and why we use Spherical bearings instead of Pot bearings ?!
It depends on bridge high loadings, rotation and common temperature of climate this is obvious for:
🔸large-angle bridges that pot bearings can't work for
🔸wide-curved bridges,
🔸large torsion bridges,
🔸low-temperature bridges below -40℃, etc.
🔸 Longer service life
All these conditions make pot bearing not suitable for using cause its mechanism doesn't fulfil them 👆
🔽 Types of Spherical bearings:
🔸Same as (pot bridge) bearing, the spherical bearing has fixed type, guided sliding type, and free sliding type.
🔸Fixed bearing – vertical rotation performance
🔸Guided sliding spherical bearing – vertical rotation and longitudinal sliding performance
🔸Free sliding spherical bearing – Vertical rotation, longitudinal and horizontal sliding performance.
🔽 Difference between spherical bearings and pot bearings ( In brief ):
🔸Spherical bearing can take even higher loads, strength and rotation.
🔸There is no Elastomer sealing ring, rubber. etc like in pot bearings.
🔸 It is thinner than pot bearings.
🔸It takes less pedestal area than Pot bearings due to the strength of sliding material.
🔸Its typically a 8 mm thick dimpled sheet called UHMWPE -180 Mpa (twice of PTFE).
