Ausdance SA is the peak body for dance in South Australia. We represent dance, in all its varied fo
Ausdance SA - supporting the dance community
It is recognised as a leader in the field of dance through the provision of dance advocacy, activity, education, promotion and professional development for dance artists, practitioners and enthusiasts throughout South Australia.
Vacancy: President AusdanceSA
We are currently looking for a President to inspire, excite and draw the dance community together to move AusdanceSA forward. We need an individual who will lead our association in advocacy, support, and promotion for dance and the dance artists of SA.
The President will drive a vision for AusdanceSA, leading a committee who will respond to members needs and interests, while maintaining a connection with Ausdance National, Ausdance associations from other states and Arts advocacy groups across the nation. You won’t do this alone but will be supported by a committee of like-minded AusdanceSA members.
If this sounds like you, please contact us as soon as possible at [email protected].
AusdanceSA needs you now! To all Ausdance members and friends - we need you!
AusdanceSA, funded only by memberships, has been operating over the last few years on only good will and a passion for dance in this state. The number of volunteers and committee members to
make this happen, has gradually dwindled, and with that the responsibilities of keeping our organisation afloat is falling on only a few. We are struggling to keep the organisation going.
Ausdance is unique in embracing the independent, community, recreational, professional, studio and education dance sectors – we have a stronger voice together, but that voice is slowly losing
impact, despite our best efforts and intentions.
Right now, we need AusdanceSA members to be more involved, we need to increase our membership and we need more members to volunteer for the organising committee.
Whichever sector you represent, please contact [email protected] today, if:
you are willing to be on the AusdanceSA committee
need to renew your membership but are unsure how
have suggestions on how we can increase our membership, or
simply wish to show your support
The committee is currently looking for passionate people to fill the roles of:
President
Treasurer
Membership officer
Ausdance SA successfully organised the Dance Connections event, generously sponsored by Educators SA and Credit Union SA, with professional videography from Amanda Phillips and Alex Mitchell of Felicity Arts. This professional learning event was specifically designed for teachers, aiming to enhance student and teacher wellbeing through dance and arts learning strategies. Dance Connections event attracted dance teachers, practicing artists, and educators with diverse backgrounds in dance, specialising in working with learners aged 11 and under. The event featured workshops and interactive sessions focused on somatic movement, inclusive dance practices, Arts Movement therapies and curriculum resources for teachers and students, to integrate dance into studio and/or educational settings. The workshops aimed to empower teachers and dance educators with practical tools to promote positive student mental health and wellbeing and enrich arts learning experiences.
Here’s what our participants said:
“Great to connect mind, body and movement”
"Engaging and valuable”
"Great practices to avoid burnout"
“Really great resources”
"great ideas for professional development”
“More events like these”
Thankyou to Dragonfly Dance (Ausdance SA member Jo McDonald) for hosting the event at your beautiful studio space. We Thankyou our workshops speakers and presenters Angela McMillan Tanya Voges for your rich and informative sessions.
Participants left rejuvenated, inspired and equipped with practical tools and innovative strategies to nurture positive mental health and enrich arts learning in their classrooms. The resounding feedback underscores the event's success in fostering connections and empowering educators to continue integrating dance into educational settings.
***Dance Connections 2024***
Wednesday 26th June 9:30am-2pm
Supported by Dragonfly Dance and Felicity Arts
Sponsored by Educators SA, Credit Union SA
Meet Ausdance SA’s Guest Speaker and Workshop Presenters and find out what they will be delivering at Dance Connections 2024
***Guest Speaker - Angela Mc Millian
Feldenkrais and Somatic Movement***
Enhance your teaching repertoire with our upcoming workshop on Somatics, specifically designed for dance teachers. Led by Feldenkrais practitioner Angela McMillan, this session explores the profound benefits of somatic practices. While stretching and strength training often steal the spotlight in dance preparation, the Feldenkrais Method and Awareness Through Movement lessons offer equally significant benefits. These practices emphasize the subtleties of movement and perception, leading to subtle yet impactful changes in strength, balance, and range of motion.
***Tanya Voges- Workshop Presenter
Art of Movement***
In the Art of Movement workshop Tanya will share her practice as a Creative Arts Therapist, specialising in Dance Movement Therapy and as a teaching artist in schools and with young people. The focus will be on the psychosomatic connection that comes from movement practice, how we can use rhythm and play to regulate and how to create safe enough spaces for students to feel able to express themselves through movement.
***Billie Cook - Workshop Presenter
Inclusive dance practice for diverse learners and Recallibration for Teachers***
Teacher’s will be learning practical and easy to use techniques for preparation and planning that include workshop tools that support sensory awareness during learning, Dance warmup games that promote heavy sensory feedback and fun composition tasks for creating dance movement. Teachers will also find the program enjoyable as it is delivered through engaging activities and reflective tasks which are designed for teacher body and mind rejuvenation. At the end of this workshop teachers will also be taught a short, guided movement meditation that they can do as a rejuvenating morning practice on any day.
***Amanda Kimber - Workshop Presenter
Curriculum content and the Primary. Classroom***
In this session we’ll have a look at the current units of work and accompanying resources available to teachers in schools. Written by the Department for Education between 2020 and 2023, and available also to the Catholic and independent systems, these units are a ‘one-stop shop’ for teachers. Everything needed to deliver an engaging learning experience, in alignment with the Australian Curriculum, is there. Whether you want to teach the unit word for word, adapt it to better fit your students, or wish simply to use or be inspired by, a couple of the ideas, activities or resources, this session will show you what’s available and how to find it.

Dance Advocacy Update
Ausdance National were invited to represent at the Enquiry into the National Cultural Policy in July. Cathy Adamek (Director ACT) was able to attend with Michelle Silby (Director Vic) and delivered a response drawn from the original AN submission, recent consultation initiated by Julie Englefield (Director QLD) and a review of the government's Revive policy document with Jacob Williams (Chair AN).
A tremendous combined national network effort!
Our main objective was to draw to their attention the lack of reference to dance in the policy.
Read an excerpt of the Ausdance Public Hearing Statement:
We celebrate Australia’s new NCP – Revive, and we support its broad recommendations relating to all art forms. However, there are gaps we would like to see addressed:
▪️There needs to be more support for First Nations dance across the sector.
▪️ There is little reference to dance or language-specific references to dance across all pillars, which primarily emphasise visual arts and music.
▪️ Dance is a major contributor to cultural storytelling
▪️Dance is one of the most diverse art forms, and
is one of the top three most popular forms of physical recreation.
We ask that dance is explicitly recognised across the five pillars.
