π·οΈπ Embrace Adventure, Confidence, and Calmness! ππ·οΈ
A young adventurer masters the spider web climber! Climbing builds courage and determination, while also offering a moment of calmness through proprioceptive input. Engaging big muscles fosters a state of alert relaxation, enhancing focus and resilience, and honing gross motor skills.
Want to enhance your child's playtime? Encourage them to climb similar structures at the playground. As they navigate the climb, they'll naturally engage their big muscles, providing valuable proprioceptive input for a sense of calm and focus, while simultaneously improving their gross motor skills such as coordination and balance.

π Let's Talk Sensory Fun! π Did you know that simple tools like STRAWS and POM POMS can work wonders in supporting regulation? Here's why they're our go-to goodies in occupational therapy! π
βοΈ Sensory Stimulation: Straws provide oral sensory input, promoting self-regulation and calming effects for children who benefit from oral motor activities. Pom poms, on the other hand, offer tactile feedback, engaging the senses and promoting focus and attention.
βοΈ Fine Motor Fun: Using straws to blow pom poms or other lightweight objects across a surface not only strengthens oral motor muscles but also targets fine motor skills like hand-eye coordination and precision.
βοΈ Visual Tracking: Watching pom poms move through the air or along a path encourages visual tracking skills, essential for reading, writing, and everyday tasks requiring attention to detail.
βοΈ Mindful Moments: Blowing through a straw to move pom poms can serve as a mindfulness activity, helping children focus on their breath and promote a sense of calm when overwhelmed.
βοΈ Creative Expression: From building patterns to creating art, the possibilities are endless with straws and pom poms! Encouraging creativity fosters self-expression and boosts confidence.
Ready to add a splash of sensory magic to your therapy toolkit? Let's dive into the world of straws and pom poms together! π¨β¨ ππ

π Embrace the Power of Play! π Did you know that playgrounds aren't just fun spots for kids? Playgrounds can be a goldmine for developing gross motor skills! Here are some key benefits:
1. Enhanced Motor Skills: Swinging, climbing, jumpingβthese activities challenge balance, coordination, and strength, promoting the development of crucial motor skills.
2. Sensory Stimulation: Playgrounds provide a variety of sensory experiences, from the feel of different textures to the sound of laughter and movement. These sensory inputs are essential for sensory integration and modulation.
3. Social Interaction: Playgrounds are bustling hubs where kids learn to navigate social situations, share, take turns, and collaborateβskills crucial for building relationships and developing social competence.
4. Cognitive Development: Negotiating obstacles, planning routes, and problem-solving on the playground all exercise cognitive skills, fostering critical thinking and spatial awareness.
5. Emotional Well-being: The joy and accomplishment of mastering new challenges on the playground boost self-confidence and self-esteem, nurturing positive emotional development.
So, whether you're a parent, teacher, or therapist, encourage kids to hit the playground! It's not just playβit's a powerful tool for holistic development. Let's swing, slide, and climb our way to stronger, happier kids! π€ΈββοΈπ§ββοΈ

πͺ Let's Fly High with our Trapeze!
π Our Director, Kelly is showing off the trapeze in our clinic. This fantastic swing provides so many benefits for our young friends, such as:
βοΈ Strength in Soaring: Trapeze work builds upper body strength! Gripping, swinging, and hanging challenges muscles, fostering growth in arms, shoulders, and core. It's a thrilling way to boost muscle tone and coordination!
βοΈ Balance & Coordination: Balancing on a trapeze bar demands focus, stability, and agility, honing essential motor skills. Whether climbing, swinging, or dismounting, every move sharpens balance and coordination, laying a solid foundation for daily tasks.
βοΈ Sensory Sensation: Trapezes engage the vestibular system with every swing. This sensory input promotes body awareness, spatial orientation, and self-regulationβkey elements for navigating the world with confidence!
βοΈ Confidence in Flight: Conquering a trapeze heightens self-esteem and fosters a "can-do" attitude. Overcoming fears, setting goals, and achieving these, empowering individuals to soar beyond limitations, both on the trapeze and in life!
Come try it for yourself and see the benefits of this humble piece of equipment used for OT!

INTEROCEPTION AND OUR BODY π€²πΌ
Can you think of the last time you felt your stomach ache? Or butterflies in your tummy? Or your heart begin to race? Or your chest feeling tight? Or your palms sweat? π°
How is it that our body feels these feelings?β¦Thanks to one of our bodyβs hidden senses, interoception, we are able to notice these feelings.
Interoception helps us know what is going on in our body such as if we are hungry, full, need to use the bathroom, hot/cold, thirsty, nauseous, anxious or itchy. Interoception also helps us interpret and understand our emotions.
For many of our young friends, interoception is a very important sense to learn about as they may have difficulty noticing, or understanding their body signals, causing challenges with their emotional and/or physical experiences.
This workshop is designed to inform our young friends of their interoception sense and help support them in increasing their interoception skills through a variety of fun activities such as body experiments engaging all of our senses, stories, and mindfulness. This oneβs highly recommended for all our young friends to attend. ππΌ
Come and connect your mind and body with us in this workshop! π₯°

Let's take a closer look at our Holiday Programs! π₯°
Asian Adventures Cooking Class π±π£π₯
Prepare to take a trip over to Asia for this Asian-inspired cooking workshop. Weβll be engaging all of our senses in this fun-filled sensory experience, exploring different smells, tastes, sights, sounds, and textures whilst also thinking about our 3 hidden senses. Weβll be digging our (clean) hands into the dumpling dough and pressing on the dumpling presses to receive some great proprioceptive input, helping us self-regulate whilst we make some delicious dumplings. Weβll also be making our own sushi rolls, encouraging your child to try a variety of different fillings, whilst exploring the unique texture and smell of sushi rice and soy sauce! Itβs important for our young friends to keep hydrated so we thought weβd add a popular Asian drink to this workshopβs menu. Can you guess what it is? Clueβ¦it contains popping pearls! π§
Even if your child is a fussy feeder and doesnβt eat these foods, they can still gain lots of benefits and take their makings home for the rest of the family! Itβs a sense-ational experience! π
Due to the popular demand of our cooking groups, we have decided to run two separate Asian Adventure time slots. Our morning will be available for our 4-7 year olds and our afternoon is available for our 8+ year olds.
Come join us for this Asian-inspired adventure and explore your senses with us!

Autumn has arrived here at the Learn Sense Grow clinic with leaves falling and covering almost our entire outdoor area! Some of our OTs took some of their own advice and had a lunchtime movement break of raking leaves. π
This is a great Autumn activity that provides lots of heavy work to our body through the pushing, pulling, bending, and scooping up movements involved in raking leaves. Weβd highly recommend having your child help rake leaves at home. Such a fun way to provide our young friends with proprioceptive input to support regulation, with the added bonus of a cleaner outdoor area! Whilst outside add an extra sensory element by encouraging your young person to enjoy the great outdoors.
Ask them to:
π listen to the sounds of nature by finding 5 things they can hear,
π touching 5 natural textures
π smelling 5 fresh scents of nature
π looking to find 5 different shaped or coloured leaves
π or just spend time counting the leaves you see fall as a mindfulness technique.
Autumn is a beautiful season to enjoy! βΊοΈ
Did you know βBaciβ in Italian means βkissesβ. So today to celebrate Valentines Day with our Learn Sense Grow family (aka staff!) we shared Baci chocolates. For those who are not familiar, these are delicious chocolates (be aware, they do contain nuts!) that when you open them they share a message or love/friendship note.
My message was:
βLove me when I deserve it the least because thatβs when I need it the mostβ! β₯οΈ
This was such a profound statement that I took some time to deeply reflect on it. How true this is in our practise and for the children and families we work with. I felt I needed to bring some awareness and draw your attention to sit and reflect on this yourselves. Many of our young friends experience difficulties and challenges that can at times be hard as a parent, an educator, a friendβ¦.to work through or watchβ¦. but remember, as quoted by Dr Ross Greene, βkids will do well if they canβ. Itβs not intentional but a cry for help. So love them more and support them at this time. They need you.
Happy Valentineβs Day β₯οΈ
