Meet William!

We're proud to introduce our first dual trade apprentice, William Forrest, an MTA Apprentice who is hosted at McLaren Vale Auto Electrical.

William started his induction this week as a dual trade light vehicle and auto electrical apprentice, and was congratulated by MTA CEO Darrell Jacobs and Acting Skills Commissioner and former MTA CEO John Chapman OAM.

William said, "Having the dual trade will allow me to work in almost any workshop. If I ever want to move or travel, I can always pick up a job anywhere in the country. It's very handy to have knowledge of light vehicle technology and auto electrical systems, especially with the rise of newer electrical cars."

He added, "It's only an extra year, and you get a whole other certificate out of it. It's just worth it and makes sense."

Expressing his gratitude, William said, "I'm very happy to be here. Thank you to the MTA, my Employment Officer James Reimann, and McLaren Vale Auto Electrical for hosting me."

The MTA 2024 Automotive Awards and Graduation Ceremony showcased the best young talents in the industry!

MTA SA/NT CEO Darrell Jacobs emphasised the importance of trade skills and continuous learning, stating, "The rapid growth of EVs and hybrids, which now make up a quarter of new car sales, shows the need for skilled apprentices. By equipping apprentices like Eli Moss (2024 Apprentice of the Year) to work with the latest technology, skills and knowledge, we prepare them to become leaders in the industry."

Minister for Education, Training, and Skills, Blair Boyer MP, who awarded the graduating certificates, added, "The work that the MTA does and the jobs that are available in automotive are a fantastic example for young people."

Meet Ajay, a first-year MTA apprentice training to become an Automotive Body Repair Technician at Rhino Crash Repair Group.

Ajay's journey into automotive body repair started when he connected with our recruitment team at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. Within weeks of that initial conversation, he secured an interview and began his work experience, eventually leading to his apprenticeship.

He shared, "The MTA has been fantastic and everything fell into place so quickly. I'm excited to expand my skills and become an expert in my trade. So far, my favourite aspect of the job is dent pulling because it's so satisfying." πŸ”§

Meet Quinn, a second-year MTA apprentice training to become a body repair technician and spray painter. Hosted at Gawler Bodyworks, Quinn has a deep passion for transforming cars.

β€œThree years ago, I was working in childcare, but I always had a passion for cars without knowing exactly what I wanted to do. With my partner's support, we explored different career options and realised my creative side was perfect for painting cars. I instantly fell in love with it.”

Quinn’s fascination with Japanese cars sparked her passion for the Miata, turning a small project into a full-scale restoration. Inspired by Aston Martin, she transformed her Miata into a stunning pearl-white beauty in her boss’s workshop, while he encouraged her to work on the car and enjoy the learning process.

The restoration from February to March was a labour of love. Her favourite feature on the car is the pop-up headlights. Now, she's planning to boost the Miata's performance with individual throttle bodies (ITBs) and uniquely designed heart-shaped exhaust tip.

The MTA had the privilege of hosting Federal Minister for Skills and Training, Brendan O'Connor MP, at our Royal Park Training Centre. During his visit, the Minister announced that $10,000 apprenticeship incentives under the New Energy Apprenticeships Program would be expanded.

Joined by Motor Trades Association of Australia Chair and MTA SA/NT Chair Frank Agostino, MTAA CEO Matthew Hobbs, MTA SA/NT Deputy Chair Mark McGuire and MTA SA/NT CEO Darrell Jacobs, the Minister confirmed that in response to our industry feedback, the incentives will be opened up to even more young people considering a career in automotive.

Lucy, an MTA Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology student, expressed her excitement about the incentives, noting that this will inspire more students like her to choose a career pathway that is at the forefront of Australia's transition to clean energy, focusing on servicing and supporting the country's expanding electric vehicle (EV) fleet.
