APR2P Pacific Director Romulo Nayacalevu and Nikki Marczak Atrocity Prevention Coordinator were recently in Fiji workshopping the role of the NGO sector in Atrocity Prevention. Nikki seen below alongside Executive Director Emeline Siale Ilolahia from PIANGO and Minister Filimoni Vosarogo as reported in the Fiji Times.

Speaking at PIANGO’s regional meeting, Hon Minister Vosarogo reiterated Prime Minister Rabuka’s aspiration of a “zone of peace” in the Pacific which “necessarily encompasses the prevention of violence, conflict, and atrocity crimes”, and linked the Responsibility to Protect with the Boe and Biketawa Declarations, the PIFS 2050 Strategy and PIANGO’s Strategic Direction for a peaceful and prosperous region.

The Hon Minister added, “We view R2P as a vehicle to advance the Forward Fiji Declaration” signed earlier this year in an historic commitment to peace and democracy and marking “a new era of reconciliation between Indigenous Fijians and the Indo-Fijian community”.

“Fiji is taking on a lead role in promoting R2P including supporting other nations to prevent atrocity crimes.”

“This government, in its declaration of support for democracy and the rule of law, acknowledges the disunity and violence of the past and commits to working against racism and move towards respect for fellow humans and mutual awareness that whatever seems to unite us is far stronger than what appears to divide.”
