Australian Defence Magazine's 30 under 30 award is a prestigious accolade and a huge congratulations must go to our superstar communications consultant Emma Kennedy for her nomination.

Emma has supported her Defence clients to communicate strategically through the delivery of innovative campaigns that leverage the power of video, podcasting, augmented reality and events.

Being nominated is an achievement in itself and we're incredibly proud of Emma. She's a valuable part of the RD team.

What can you do after R U OK?

R U OK was designed to inspire and empower everyone to meaningfully connect with the people around them and start a conversation with those in their world who may be struggling with life.

Our team started meeting every Friday for a coffee and walk around Lake Burley Griffin to create a time and space outside of the office to get moving, check-in on our mates and enjoy the incredible sunrises Canberra has to offer.

Today we heard from communication consultant Tom Corrigan as he shared his battle with depression, as well as the importance of .

Tom said it's not just one day of the year we should ask that question, it's every day. He also explained the importance of knowing what to do if someone answers, "no".

Not everyone is professionally trained to help someone in need, but the best thing to do is listen. It's important to make that person feel heard. After listening and understanding it's time to find the necessary help which is readily available through a number of resources.

Communication consultant Emma Kennedy will fly to New York this weekend for the UNITE 2030 'Camp 2030', an initiative that brings some of the sharpest minds together from around the world.

Emma is one of just 160 handpicked individuals to attend the camp. She's tasked with pitching ideas to achieve the United Nations' sustainable development goals. And she has the opportunity to present that pitch to a panel of delegates and international business leaders in the UN!

Do you want to optimise your communication?

Colin Anstie and Tom Corrigan recently ran a 1 day communication workshop with a phenomenal Federal Government Department Geoscience Australia - we had the whole communication branch!

We did this through three interactive problem-solving sessions:

1. Create the ideal 'end-to-end' communication process.

In smaller groups, participants created their ideal 'end-to-end' work process. The outcome of this was brilliant! Several great suggestions were put forward by the group for Col and Tom to collate, summarise, and present an implementable solution.

2. Redesigning their project management tool.

It was clear that improvements could be made after a discussion within the workshop. Back in their smaller groups, they were tasked with redesigning the 'perfect' tool. The outcome of this was a number of practical suggested improvements and it provided plenty of clarity to the group about what could be better. We got to the actions and decided on dates to implement - ready for action.

3. Implement a 12-month calendar of major events, dates, and milestones for the department.

This was the quickest win for the group and allowed everyone in the team to clearly see landmarks, deadlines, and milestones they were previously unfamiliar with. The outcome was derived after listening to the group list major events, and the necessary time frames they need to complete tasks. Next, they selected a tool to be used as their calendar and stick with it so everyone is on the same page.

The bonus session of the day was completely organic - INNOVATION!

Throughout the day there was an emphasis on innovation. Everyone in the department was willing to try new things. We suggested as a follow up for the team to work on after the workshop, for all of the participants to take what they have learnt during the workshop and come up with two different ways of innovating their current practices, and tangible actions to inject innovation into every element of communication.

We thoroughly enjoyed the day, filled with energy, ideas, passion, but the results will speak loudest.
