Brown's Mart is the oldest building in the city, being built in 1885! This beauty has withstood the cyclones of 1897, 1937 and 1974, Cyclone Marcus 2018, and the wartime bombing in 1942 and 1943!

Today, 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻'𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘁 has been operating for 50 years, creating and supporting the creation of new performance work.

Many of our amazing artists also hire the venue to showcase their work with the amazing support of Brown’s Mart and government grants.

Today is the 𝘽𝙤𝙢𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝘿𝙖𝙧𝙬𝙞𝙣 𝘿𝙖𝙮, and it has been 81 years since war reached Australian shores on 19th February 1942.

Please take the time for those who courageously defended our country, those who selflessly helped others, those who deal with the aftermath and those who lost their lives.

The annual commemorative service will be held today at The Cenotaph, Esplanade from 9am-11.30 by the City of Darwin and is open to the public to join.

If you would like to learn more about the history of Darwin, take a stroll along the seafront where you can read the stories of Darwin’s military and war heroes.

Today, we think nothing of flying from Darwin to London and back again. Think back 100 years ago and it was a very different matter.

In 1918, no aircraft had yet crossed an ocean and yet in 1919 the Commonwealth Government announced prize money - of what would be just short of $1 million today - to the first Australian to fly from England to Australia in 30 days or less.

The Great Air Race had commenced, and it was in December 1919 that Darwin was the finish line.
