Captain James Rakich has issued a heartfelt statement about the condition of the vessel and the challenges we now face in repairing the extensive damage to the masts, spars, and rigging. We remain hopeful as we begin the process of derigging the ship to ensure its safety and assess the full extent of the damage.

Hello friends and family of Leeuwin,

It is with a heavy but hopeful heart that I write this, after Friday’s incident where the vessel was dismasted whilst alongside at B Berth. I’m thankful for the medical care and support provided to our two crew members aboard at the time, and the outpouring of support from throughout the Leeuwin community - asking how can they help.

I feel the shock that each and everyone of us go through, seeing a vessel we believe in, live aboard, make friends on, be a part of reduced to a state that is familiar, but barely recognizable. The masts, spars and rigging have all been significantly damaged, with the masts all having fallen most of the way to deck, still under tension. On Saturday, surveyors and I were able to access the vessel and inspect the interior of the vessel, it appears the vessel’s watertight integrity has been maintained. We have closed underwater valves and watertight doors, and the ship appears for the time being safe in its position alongside B Berth.

We are continuing to monitor our drafts and mooring lines to ensure the safety of the vessel, and attention now draws toward the task of derigging the vessel to make it safe for access and to then determine the full extent of the damage. I must stress that this is a high risk / low frequency event (look it up, it’s good watching). Our priority is to avoid injury to workers and further damage to the vessel.

I am overwhelmed by the eagerness of volunteers old and new to support the vessel in any way they can help. Please continue to reach out to our office - we may not respond immediately but we are listening. In time, we will get the vessel ready to sail once more. I can’t tell you when or how long that will take, this early after the incident, but know that when the times comes the whole Leeuwin family will be instrumental in our return to sail, and I’ll be with you and the ship every step of the way.

PRESS RELEASE:

The Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation would like to thank the public for their messages of support since the incident on Friday in which the STS Leeuwin II was damaged in a collision in Fremantle Harbour.

We are pleased to advise that our two crew members who were on board the Leeuwin at the time of the collision have been discharged from hospital and are recovering.

We would like to pay thanks to the first responders and hospital staff who treated our crew professionally and with compassion. We request that our crew’s privacy continues to be observed as they recover.

This morning our Captain and surveyors boarded the vessel for the first time since the incident.

They secured watertight bulkheads, isolated valves and other key systems onboard to ensure the safety of the vessel.

Whilst it is too early to determine fully the extent of the damage, it appeared the hull was intact but there was catastrophic damage to the rigging, masts, spars and equipment on deck. This damage is consistent with a dismasting.

We will now formulate a plan for derigging the vessel safely.

The Leeuwin appreciates that there is a strong interest in the future of the program and we are aware that the ship has touched the lives of many thousands of West Australians. We will endeavour to keep everyone updated as we determine the next steps for our beloved Leeuwin.

There is a long road ahead for us to get the Leeuwin back to her formal glory, and we need the support of our loving community during this time.

Get a taste of life at sea with our Adventure Leadership Program! This unique voyage combines leadership theory with practical, hands-on experience, teamwork, and learning the values of good leadership.

THE PROGRAM

• Day 1: Join us at 10:00am, get allocated to your watch team, and explore the rigging. After dinner, participate in a workshop to set personal goals for the weekend.

• Overnight: Take part in night watch rotations, ensuring the ship’s safety.

• Day 2: Start with deck exercises, then dive into a full day of activities like setting and furling sails, steering the ship, team sports, and problem-solving exercises. Depending on conditions, we might stay at sea or anchor overnight.

• Day 3: Continue with watch rotations and activities before returning to port around 2:00pm. Reflect on your experience and what you’ve learned about leadership and teamwork.

Participants will face challenges, achieve goals, and leave physically tired but emotionally charged. Plus, this voyage meets the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Bronze Award – Adventurous Journey.
