James Harrison's Momentous Achievements - Exhibition
Contact information, map and directions, contact form, opening hours, services, ratings, photos, videos and announcements from James Harrison's Momentous Achievements - Exhibition, The Geelong Showgrounds, Geelong.
A rare collection showing Geelong inventor James Harrison as a brilliant untrained scientist and engineer, and a visionary leader who benefited humanity by discovering how to make ice in quantity.
The Geelong and Region Branch of the National Trust (GRBNT) is supporting the Pioneer Museum at the Showgrounds and the early refrigeration machines that they hold with Timeline Panels about James Harrison’s life, his pioneering adventures as the founding Editor of the Geelong Advertiser 1840 - 1865, and as a world-beating inventor.
The panels were prepared for Geelong’s UNESCO Design Week event in March 2021 about The Unpredictable James Harrison (1816-1873).
In 1854, James Harrison, Geelong’s inventor of large-scale ice-making machines, invented the world’s first refrigerators capable of commercial ice production, and patented them in Victoria and England.
In 1863 his Beer Preserver won a medal at the Geelong and Western District Pastoral and Agricultural Show.
Capable of chilling quantities of beer during production, his machines revolutionised beer production world-wide.
A great opportunity for show-goers -

Also do visit the Pioneer Museum (corner Carr St and Breakwater Road); it has an amazing array of early and vintage machinery.
Many will be working, powered by enormous restored steam engines.
Their early refrigeration machines include a 1900s compressor manufactured in Humble’s Foundry, Ryrie St, now Harrison Place.
That was where many refrigerators to Harrison’s specifications were made after 1858 when, having perfected his machine with precision engineers in England,, he returned to Geelong with a machine costing 1200 pounds (about $120,000 today) and capable of processing 3000 kg of ice a day.
With it he set up the world’s first ice works at North Geelong in 1859.
By 1900, machines that were simpler and smaller like the Humble machine displayed were able to produce ice. Also on show (r) is a 1920s domestic Hallstrom refrigerator.
But all refrigerators and air conditioners still use the principles that James invented in 1854 at Rocky Point beside the Barwon River.
Every time you switch them on you should say ‘Thanks, James’!
