Stool (3D Printed Models & Prototype)

Originally designed and developed for the MPavilion Chair Commission. We were unsuccessful with our entry into the MPavilion, but we thought the idea hd legs.. (four in fact). So we kept the ball rolling and made one for ourselves. It still needs some work, but we’re getting closer…

On a side note, we like that Italian architects have a crack at just about designing any object - It’s a bit of shame that we seperate the disciplines out so much here in Australia…

Molesworth, Tasmania (1hr North of Hobart)

‘The Corrugated Shed’ is both an Australian Cultural, and Architectural constant. The most celebrated Architect in Australia (GM) even found a way to glorify the shed in a way that was so profound that a the work became canonical, which is to say the built work represented true ‘Australian Architecture’, its true vernacular, rendering everything else false.

If you’re Architect, this is a very interesting debate.

In any case, the virtues of the shed remain fundamental to our thinking (I.e simplicity, economy) so when we were asked to design a new home for a young family in Molesworth, Tasmania it didn’t take long for intuition to lead us to the shed.

Sketches, Plan, Site Photo.

‘Kainga Residence’ - An Edwardian weatherboard Villa in Newtown (Geelong). [1904]

The home has undergone numerous small alterations and additions over the course of its 120 year history slowly causing the home to grow into a series of dark corridors and myriad of rooms.

Our approach was to utilise the same building footprint, but to reconfigure the spatial arrangement to better serve a contemporary lifestyle, with a particularly an emphasis on an establishing a strong connection to the garden.

Kainga (Māori)
1. (noun) temporary abode, temporary accommodation, makeshift settlement, camping ground.

Surf Retreat - El Sunzal, El Salvador. (Lot 2/3)

Single Dwelling with 2-Bedrooms separated by a single living space. The design features a rooftop terrace that is accessed by external stair.

The southern boundary of this lot is adjoined by another equally sized lot, however it will not feature any buildings. It is reserved for a garden, palms, hammocks and a mango tree.

Surf Retreats (Lot 1/3) - El Sunzal, El Salvador.
Near Punta Roca.

Over the Easter weekend, I overheard a family at a popular Geelong playground (Sparrow Park) talking about what’s it’s like to live in El Salvador… I thought I was going crazy.. but to my surprise, it was an aussie family back for the long-weekend.

“People meet in Playgrounds” should have been what we called our NGV Proposal last year…
Anyway great chat, hopefully we finish our Surf Retreats in the near future - there will be a cold beer waiting.

Lot 2 and Lot 3 will be a bit different. Single Home, maybe a Yoga Hut respectively.

2. A photocopy of a landscape… probably scanned and stored 15 years ago. The similarities between the images was unintentional, but a pleasant surprise.

Can’t remember what book the landscape was from… maybe a Luis Barragán monograph…

Wall Section Prototype - Lloyd’s Place (Geelong)

Construction will soon begin at Lloyd’s Place, a 4 - Level Hospitality Venue featuring a Rooftop Bar (L4).

When considering what might be an appropriate design to this small but significant building, we noted that many of Geelong’s heritage buildings had been stripped of their original ground level ‘solidity’ - with many replaced with wall-to-wall shopfront glass and aluminium. We wanted to avoid this, and instead wanted to emphasise the character of the building at the street level - Besides, who else looks up at buildings except architects… Finial anyone?

Surf Retreat (Concept) - El Sunzal, El Salvador (Central America).

Today marks a historic moment in El Salvador’s history as it is the first time that national’s living abroad are given an opportunity to vote in the presidential elections. In Victoria, the consulate to vote in person is located in St Kilda.

Our Director, Jose, was born in El Salvador during a Civil War. At that time, Australia, the USA and Sweden were the only three Countries offering asylum. Determined to get as far away from the conflict as possible, applications were made to Australia, and on the third attempt, asylum was granted - Jose (2) arrived in Australia as a refugee.

The road to peace and stability in El Salvador has been slow and rocky… it’s a work in progress.

Jose is grateful for all the opportunities that Australia has afforded since his arrival.

Today, the studio team consists of those born in Australia, El Salvador, Singapore, Philippines, Chile and Vietnam. And although not a country, one member is from the Gold Coast (QLD) which is a world apart. 😉

We look forward to visiting this retreat in time to come.

Henry Ford named the ‘Model-T’ after its position as the 20th design on the assembly line.

Despite Models A-S not making it past the parking lot, these apparent failures served as opportunities for trial and error. In the end, the iterative process led to the success of the Model T and revolutionised manufacturing with the assembly line, emphasising that each design was a chance to test, learn, and make incremental advances.

‘Urban Hopes’

A studio exhibition displaying small scale works-in-progress.

The exhibition featured models and plans of projects which were then, and still remain, unrealised.

Although not immediately obvious, each project ‘challenged’ the conventions of home and offered a digestible alternative…

These projects aren’t intended as universal solutions to the housing crisis [architecture can’t actually solve that], but as representations of ideas and ideals: in other words hope.

Exhibition was held at The KO Creative Space (Geelong).
