๐ Collaboration and Teamwork in Neuro Respiratory Physiotherapy ๐
In the field of neuro respiratory physiotherapy, collaboration and teamwork are crucial. Many physiotherapists work in isolation, whether in acute hospital settings or community roles. This isolation can limit access to valuable information from a patient's broader care team, including carers, disability support workers, and general practitioners.
๐ฅ Unlock the Power of Teamwork ๐ฅ
Failing to utilise the insights of a patient's care team can lead to missed opportunities in managing daily challenges. These team members are vital in providing comprehensive patient care.
๐ ๏ธ Embrace a Multidisciplinary Approach ๐ ๏ธ
Involving all relevant stakeholders ensures a holistic approach, empowering everyone involved to contribute effectively.
๐ Enhance Your Collaborative Skills ๐
At the Neuro Respiratory Physiotherapy Academy, we offer resources and training to help physiotherapists improve their collaborative skills and knowledge.

Your role in patient care, especially for those with neurological disabilities, is crucial. Failing to see the full scope of your impact can lead to missed opportunities for enhancing patient outcomes. Not fully acknowledging your contributions can limit your effectiveness, potentially leading to inadequate care and poorer recovery for your patients. Recognising the importance of your role empowers you to advocate for necessary interventions and collaborate effectively with the healthcare team. This not only improves patient outcomes but also elevates the standard of care in your practice.

Research shows that whilst CPGs, in theory, should provide busy physiotherapists with easy-to-use tools that support efficient access to current best evidence in ways that inform their daily clinical practice decisions, their uptake rarely occurs at the speed of evidence production.
Lack of time along with lack of resources, lack of skills to access and understand research evidence, misperceptions of EBP, lack of managerial support, lack of generalisability of research and what constitutes quality evidence are all consistently reported to be major barriers to effective uptake of research evidence into clinical practice.
We all have dedicated our lives to caring for others. We are busy, pulled in many directions and despite this always reflecting and striving to be better, so that we can positively impact peopleโs lives. As a neuro respiratory physiotherapist who has worked in this space for 18 years, there are some overarching principles backed by the latest research and I am here to simplify it for you.

"Transforming practice one course at a time. Our students are gaining the confidence and knowledge to excel in their field. Weโre so proud of their progress."
๐ง ๐ฌ๏ธ Reflecting on the importance of challenging the status quo in clinical practice, it is crucial for physiotherapists to critically evaluate the care plans inherited from colleagues. Often, we may find ourselves continuing with established protocols without considering whether they are truly the best approach for the patient at hand. ๐ฉบโจ
In clinical settings, this pattern can result in stagnation or deterioration in patient outcomes if no one reassesses the situation. The problem arises when we fail to cross-check and challenge existing interventions, thereby limiting their effectiveness and potentially doing a disservice to both patients and our roles within the team.
Consider these steps:
1. Evaluate the Plan:
When encountering a new patient, take a moment to critically assess the current plan. Reflect on whether it addresses the patientโs unique needs and circumstances at that moment.๐ค
2. Seek Support:
If uncertain, consult with a more experienced colleague to discuss clinical reasoning and develop a comprehensive plan. This collaborative approach ensures that interventions are well-informed and effective.
3. Commit to Growth:
Recognize the responsibility to enhance your skills and knowledge, empowering yourself to make independent decisions and challenge the status quo. This commitment ensures that you provide the highest level of care and efficacy in your practice. ๐๐ช

1. ๐๐๐ฅ๐-๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ: Are the decisions truly in the best interest of the patient, or do they stem from a lack of confidence and understanding of the necessary assessments and red flags?

There is weak consensus against PEP devices for cough and secretion clearance in people with SCI that have expiratory muscle weakness (this includes use of oscillating positive pressure devices).
In other words, positive expiratory pressure devices should not be provided to improve secretion clearance in people with SCI who have expiratory muscle weakness.
So what are the respiratory interventions recommended in the recently published SCI clinical practice guidelines and how do we implement them?
