Diabetes Week | 14-20 July π
Worried about diabetes? Itβs hard to know if you are at risk of diabetes, with limited outward symptoms. During Diabetes Week, weβre shining a light on the importance of getting regular check-ups with your GP, who can organise the tests required to see if you are at risk.
Being pre-diabetic can be a wake-up call, but the good news is that with the right advice and support, you can make positive changes to stay healthy and avoid becoming diabetic. This week is a good week to make the time to talk to your GP.

Did you know there are Health Plans for chronic medical conditions? Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plans are available for individuals dealing with conditions that persist for at least six months, such as asthma, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, or stroke.
We offer care plans to all eligible patients who suffer from a chronic illness with little or no cost for Medicare card holders. If you require assistance in managing your condition, consult your GP to determine if a plan is suitable for you.
What is a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan?
The Australian Government introduced the Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan to provide extra financial support through Medicare for individuals dealing with chronic or terminal medical conditions.
You might be eligible for a CDM Plan referral if your chronic or terminal medical condition requires care from a team of healthcare providers, including your GP and at least two others.
A chronic medical condition is one that has been around for six months or more, like asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, musculoskeletal conditions, or stroke. There's no specific list of eligible conditions. The CDM Plan is designed for patients who need a structured approach, especially those requiring ongoing care from a team of healthcare experts.
Your GP can help determine if you are eligible for a plan.
Are you staying hydrated?
Your body needs water to survive and work properly.
Water is essential for:
π§ Digesting food and absorbing nutrients
π§ Moving our bodies well
π§ Getting rid of waste products
π§ Keeping our body at the right temperature
π§ Drinking water also keeps your teeth and mouth healthy
You can tell if you are well hydrated by the colour of your urine. If it's pale yellow or straw-coloured, you are probably well hydrated. If it's darker yellow, you need to drink more water ... see chart below π
If you are showing any signs of dehydration, drink some water straight away and seek medical advice if you still don't feel better.
Wishing you a wonderful festive season β¨

December is a time to celebrate π₯³π₯³
Many of us will be celebrating at work functions, end of year celebrations and catch ups with friends, which usually involves alcohol.
It's important for your health to drink moderately. In addition to monitoring how much you drink, it is important that you get yourself and loved ones home safely. This party season if you're choosing to drink, leave the keys at home.
The festive season has begun π
And also a perfect time to understand some effects alcohol can have on your body. Not many people realise that excessive alcohol can affect your health and impact the people around you.
If you have some concerns, now is the time to check in with your GP.
National Skin Cancer Action Week βοΈ 20-26 November
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with approximately 2 in 3 diagnosed with skin cancer during their lifetime. Sadly, around 2000 Australians will die from this disease this year alone.
Fortunately, most skin cancers can be prevented using the five forms of sun protection when the UV level is 3 or higher:
π Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
𧴠Slop on broad spectrum, water resistant SPF30 (or higher) sunscreen.
π Slap on a hat - protect your face, head, neck and ears.
π³ Seek shade.
πΆ Slide on sunglasses β make sure they meet Australian Standards.
Have you had a skin cancer check? Talk to your GP about it today.
November is Movember π§
Movember is about taking on the three biggest health issues facing men: mental health and su***de prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
Su***de. In Australia 3 out of 4 su***des are by men.
Prostate cancer. The most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Australia.
Testicular Cancer. The most common cancer in young men.
Let's support the men in our lives and encourage them to talk about their health and see a GP for a health check. Early prevention saves lives.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month π Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among Australian women and finding it early provides the best chance of surviving the disease.
You donβt need to be an expert or use a special technique to check your breasts. Here are some changes to look for:
π a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast
π a change in the size or shape of your breast
π a change to the ni**le, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion
π a ni**le discharge that occurs without squeezing
π a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling
π an unusual pain that doesn't go away.
Most changes arenβt due to breast cancer but itβs important to see your GP if you notice any of these changes.
