What is something a wise woman in your life has shared with you?
“Do what’s best for yourself.”
What is your experience with devised theatre?
“I have pretty good experience with devised work: I’ve done some devised work at a theatre company for children, which was fun. I’ve done a lot of devised work and I think it’s the best way to make theatre. Yeah, unarguably the best way to make theatre.”
Danielle:
What is something a wise woman in your life has shared with you?
“I’ve actually been thinking about this lately and I couldn’t narrow it down to just one – it’s kind this cacophony of different things that have been said to me over the years. I can’t quite narrow down to like ‘this is the phrase that was said by a wise, inspirational woman.’ Instead I’ll say that I’ve had three wise, inspirational women in my life – one of them is my mum, the other two were both my teachers when I was in VCE and they just gave us so much advice on approaching life when you’re a woman.”
What is your experience with devised theatre?
“I did VCE drama, which is all completely devised work, non-naturalistic. Also, I was part of a theatre company called Daring Greatly where, basically, every week we did nothing but devising and did nothing but non-naturalism so that’s probably my wheelhouse, I guess. That’s where I feel most comfortable, so that’s why I was really excited to be part of this project.”
We interrupt our usual "get to know the director" posts with a cheeky preview of what everyone has been working on. Last Thursday everyone came together with snacks and creative minds to show what great ideas the devising process has thrown at them. While these are nowhere near the finished products, what we saw made us so excited to see how the plays develop and blossom!
Adelaide:
What is something a wise woman in your life has shared with you?
"My mum’s best friend Pam from school, her little line is ‘onwards and upwards’ and I’ve always really loved that as a motto for life. She’s been through some not great things and has always pulled through with a smile on her face with that attitude, so probably ‘onwards and upwards.’”
What is your experience with devised theatre?
“I haven’t really done any since high school, in drama class, but everything I’ve done since then has been script work and Shakespeare and prewritten texts so it will be very interesting to see where this goes.”
doctor, doctor
Hey! Want to help out with Old Wives Tales but don't know how? Have a weird/terrible/absurd story about that one time you went to the doctor? Here is a message from one of our directors, Jean:
-I'm directing one of 6 other brilliant pieces for Tallulah Theatre, and the one I'm doing is on how gendered expectations in the wider world filter into the healthcare system. If you have some time and/or an itch to share your experience, I would love to hear from you!
Please feel free to share as much detail as you are comfortable with: your contributions will shape the final story we tell, but all responses will be kept absolutely anonymous.

docs.google.com Hi there! If you identify as female/wom*n/trans/non-binary, we'd love to hear about your experience with the healthcare system. We're currently collating experiences for a piece of theatre we're doing on how gendered expectations in the wider world filter into the healthcare system. If you have some…
Jean:
What is something a wise woman in your life has shared with you?
"A very wise and talented person in my life said to me that if I know what I want I should just ask for it. I thought that was very useful because so often we kind of know what we want but we don’t admit to ourselves that we do. And in terms of artistic process that is a very useful thing to remember – that you actually do know what you want and you can actually ask for it and you can actually get it.”
What is your experience with devised theatre?
“I’ve devised a couple of smaller works, one of them was my own work and one was with someone else. So this is my first devised work where I am directing the devising process and getting a cast together and devising something from the ground up. There’s a very broad groundwork but there are no specific limitations which is quite exciting, so I think it will be quite an ensemblish exercise.”
Jess:
What is something a wise woman in your life has shared with you?
"How to apply for a grant.”
What is your experience with devised theatre?
"Very limited and that’s part of the appeal because I always like to do things that I haven’t done before.”
While our wonderful women are off making art, we can meet the creative brains behind it all.
Joanna:
What is something wise a woman in your life has shared with you?
"I come from a family of very very intelligent, outspoken women, and lot’s of them. So, the most inspirational things that they have told me are stories about themselves and other women from generations back in the family. Stories about all the women in my family told by the women in my family"
What is your experience with devised theatre?
“I have done a lot of textual work, a lot of work with solid, heavy scripts, a lot of classics. Then I did a devised piece as Petra’s assistant director for the major Union House Theatre production first semester of 2015 and I also did a devised production of Medea in Edinburgh with a physical theatre company called Paradok. I really enjoyed both those experiences. I’ve used devising as a way of working with text but this is my first real devised piece that I am in charge of by myself, so I’m really excited.”
A HUGE thank you to everyone who came along to the auditions last Saturday! Everyone was amazing. The pieces are now cast and rehearsals are underway! We can't wait to show you all what we're working on
