May 2024 be the beginning of amazing adventures, living passionately and creating something new!

We are excited to announce that as part of Sydney Dance Company’s tour of their new performance Ascent from 29 August to 2 September, Melbourne Dance Centre welcomes a touring Company member to deliver an incursion Workshop that complements their upcoming performance.

The Workshop is a unique opportunity to experience how the Company creates and performs new works. Dancers will be guided through Sydney Dance Company technique, taught repertoire from Ascent & will engage in Ascent creative tasks.

This is an amazing opportunity for dancers to work with a professional contemporary company and we can’t recommend it enough. It is going to be an amazing experience for all involved!

MDC ACADEMIES - CURTAINS UP 2023

WOW! Just wow is all we can say for what was an incredible Curtains Up 2022! So much talent, teamwork, energy, enthusiasm and intense passion was beaming on stage at the fabulous Clocktower Theatre. It’s no wonder our audiences were completely stunned and blown away, and we have been loving the incredible feedback we have been receiving from families and friends in the audience. Never have we seen the MDC Academies each present such a high entertaining performance as they did! Such professionalism not only for their love of dance but also the way they handled their stage craft. Most audiences do not see the going on back stage. The rush of adrenalin, the assisting of their fellow dancers in making that quick change, the rehearsing of the work to get it into their muscle memory and the encouragement to each other that they are going to just ROCK! And you all did! Wow! You bunch of rockstars! How exciting are you all for the future! BRING ON 2023!
Thank you to all our wonderful teachers & staff, for all your talent and hard work. Thank you to our fabulous parents who are just as crazy passionate for dance as we all are and most of all, thank you to our talented rock stars! We are just so very proud of you all!

MDC PRESENTATION DAY 2022!

Congratulations to MDC Academies on an amazing year of dance, performance and living passionately. What better way to wrap up 2022 by celebrating our achievements and love of the arts together as a community. Our first Presentation Event since 2019 was a hit and it was so wonderful to be able to celebrate together once again. After a pretty brilliant year, we can’t wait for 2023 and all that it will bring.

CONGRATULATIONS ORLA HARNEY!

Congratulations to long time MDC Academy dance artist and member of the Associate Performance Academy, Orla Harney on receiving her 10 year Award. Orla started off her training at MDC at just 4 years old in our Under 5 Jazz/Classical classes. Since then, Orla has grown to be a true triple threat, a versatile artist whose understanding of character and ability to show an emotive range in her performances has garnered some everlasting and memorable works. She has a bright future ahead of her and we are so proud to be a part of her journey!

‘Once Upon A Time’; an original ballet theatre piece created and choreographed by MDC Directors Alfie Scalia and Daniel Ryan with additional choreography by Natalie Lim, Jessica Fry and Evin Turan and inspired by the wonderfully talented Melbourne Ballet Academy students.

‘Once Upon A Time’, as a story ballet, was able to take audiences on a journey through many different fairy tales featuring an array of interesting characters, villains and heroes.

Filled with enchantment and poignancy, a touch of magic and a side of comedy, there was a beauty on display that also veered into an eeriness and a darkness.

‘Once Upon A Time’ showcased a stage full of stars and proved itself to be an audience favourite performance. The combined artist’s ambition and passion fully on display allowed Melbourne Ballet Academy to bring to stage one of the most perfect performances the academy has ever produced at The MDC Theatre.

Congratulations to all MBA staff and dancers! What a wonderful world you brought to the stage!

Melbourne Vocal Academy presented their inaugural performance of OPEN MIC!

Open Mic is an opportunity for each member of Melbourne Vocal Academy, the newest addition to MDC Academies community, to showcase their talents within the intimate setting of the MDC Theatre. Under the guidance of Vocal coaches Jessica Fry and Callum Warrender, the performers performed pop tracks as soloists as well as in duos and small groups. Members were able to showcase their interpretation and personal styling in front of a live audience. As well as their use of vocal and mic techniques worked on in their weekly private and group sessions.
OPEN MIC was a brilliant night for all and heralds in an exciting beginning for a new academy. We look forward to a future of new and amazing works from this talented group! Watch this space!

DAU SQUAD SHOWCASE 2022. Last Friday evening MDC Academies, DanceArts United, Associate Performance Academy and Melbourne Vocal Academy students performed in the annual troupes, groups and solos performance showcase. A night where students get to experience stage time as an individual performer or as part of a troupe in preparation for competition season as well. There is also an opportunity for senior students to develop and showcase, through combined effort, their own choreography in small groups.
Differing facets of performance is important to the MDC company ethos. Each performer was met with great enthusiasm from their audience and displayed fantastic professionalism as well as great passion for their work. Needless to say it was a brilliant and entertaining night of dance and vocal performance. MDC is a great believer in supporting and paving the way for future artists. Here are some fantastic shot of the night!

A big congratulations to the talented Young Artist Program students, who blew us all away during the Theatre Arts in-house Cabaret night ‘Me & The Music’ held at the MDC theatre. Students each showcased their self devised monologues along with a vocal solo performance, both under the direction and guidance from Theatre Arts directors Daniel Ryan & Callum Warrender. The Theatre Arts Cabaret gives members of the Young Artist Program the chance to express themselves as individual performers through their own scene into song, while telling their own small and unique story. The show was a great success, and it was so great to see the audience so captivated by the students periformance! We look forward to their end of year performances!

I AM SHE. What a triumph. A spectacle of youth talent and storytelling through dance.

The show was built around the idea of encapsulating the female spirit by asking the question “Who is She?” Using a variety of styles of Jazz dance ranging from Theatrical, Commercial to Funk and an exploratory form of Dance Theatre, and even including a quirky hand drawn animation by Director Daniel Ryan. The dancers leapt and turned, and poured their hearts into a 2 act physical performance that never let up.

The first act, Daniel Ryan’s “The Imaginarium”, proposed “She” was a multi-faced individual and showed her experiences throughout pivotal moments in her life. From a carefree individual, to becoming aware of the physical self, to a desire to find connection, and that perhaps, life didn’t quite pan out as “She” originally may have planned.

The second act, Alfie Scalia’s “She” used the experiences, the challenges and the dreams of the all female cast to create a production about breaking free of personal mental entrapment and embrace everything you are; to become the person you were born to be. Amongst the high octane Commercial and Jazz Dance set pieces were interviews, anecdotes and thought experiments, written and prepared by the female cast and edited together to create a singular, concerted voice by Director Alfie Scalia.

Held at the MDC Theatre, I Am SHE was the largest and most technically advanced and demanding dance piece to be put together by Melbourne Dance Centre’s Advanced Associate Performance Academy, offering a glimpse into the bright future of this Dance & Art specialised program.

Explore the identity and nature of “SHE”; her motivations, her fears, her frustrations, her celebrations.

I Am SHE is a double bill dance and theatre performance. Featuring two artistically contrasting halves choreographed by directors Alfie Scalia and Daniel Ryan. I Am SHE is the biggest dance performance Melbourne Dance Centre and the Associate Performance Academy have yet staged.
