WHAT IS SUGAR ADDICTION?
The relationship between sugar, dopamine, and cravings is interconnected and rooted in how the brain's reward system functions.
When you consume sugar, it triggers a series of reactions in the brain. Sugary foods are highly palatable and often provide a quick source of energy, which the brain recognises as rewarding.
Consuming sugar stimulates the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward, in the brain's reward pathways, particularly in the nucleus accumbens. This release of dopamine gives you a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction.
The pleasurable feeling from the dopamine release reinforces the behaviour of consuming sugar. Over time, this can lead to cravings for sugary foods as the brain seeks to recreate the pleasurable experience. The more frequently sugar is consumed, the stronger these cravings can become, potentially leading to a cycle of sugar dependence.
For some individuals, the relationship between sugar and dopamine can resemble addictive behaviour. The brain can become conditioned to expect the dopamine boost from sugar, leading to increased cravings and consumption, similar to how other addictive substances work.
Overall, the relationship between sugar, dopamine, and cravings highlights the powerful impact that dietary choices can have on brain chemistry and behaviour.
If you would like assistance in combating your sugar cravings, book an appointment with a PPN Dietitian 🔽

With the 2024 Paris Olympics nearing their end, let's give a shout-out to our amazing gymnasts!
Behind their stunning routines, there’s a lot of hard work—and some common injuries to watch for 🤸♀️
💪 Upper Limb Injuries: Wrist strains, elbow issues, and shoulder pain are common from the intense gripping and impacts. Male gymnasts might also deal with “pommel arm” (medial epicondylalgia) too!
🦵 Lower Limb Injuries: Ankle sprains, Achilles tendinopathy and Severs Disease are prevalent due to the large landing and takeoff forces. Plus, knee injuries, ACL tears, and conditions like Patellar Tendinopathy, Osgood-Schlatter’s are also risks.
👎 Spinal Injuries: Stress fractures in the lower back can lead to long-term issues - but with strong core control, gymnasts are well-equipped to protect their spines.
A Physiotherapist with gymnastics expertise can help keep athletes' injury-free and performing at their best. Since gymnasts are often young, it’s especially important to address any injuries that might impact their growth plates to prevent future issues.

How tight are your hip flexors?
We spend a lot of time during the day in a flexed hip position, which can lead to tight hip flexors. Whether it’s sitting at your desk, driving, or even doing squats at the gym, these activities can contribute to tightness 😬
Tight hip flexors can cause or exacerbate lower back pain, groin pain, and hip pain, particularly in runners and cyclists 🚵
Often, we don't realize just how tight our hip flexors are until we stretch them.
If you’re looking for exercises to help loosen your hip flexors or suspect they might be contributing to pain in other areas, reach out to the experts at Peninsula Sports Medicine Group who can help you avoid injury.

With the cold weather settling in this week, many arthritis sufferers (about 20% of the population) might be noticing their symptoms worsening 😓
While cold weather doesn't directly cause arthritis, it can intensify the pain. Lower temperatures have been linked to heightened pain sensitivity, decreased blood circulation, and muscle spasms, all of which can aggravate arthritis discomfort 🥶
It's crucial to remember that arthritis isn't just an age-related condition; it can affect individuals of all ages, including children.
At Peninsula Sports Medicine Group, we understand that managing arthritis requires personalised treatment plans tailored to each person’s needs.
If cold weather is making your arthritis pain worse, strengthening the muscles around your joints can help reduce pressure and enhance mobility 🙏

As students gear up for the next semester at school or university, they'll soon find themselves spending hours in front of computers or buried in textbooks 📚
This daily routine can wreak havoc on our upper backs and necks, often resulting in tense muscles, headaches, and discomfort 🤕

⏰ Take regular study breaks: These breaks can enhance concentration and reduce the likelihood of back and neck pain.
🚶♂️Incorporate stretching and mobility exercises into your study breaks: These activities boost circulation and alleviate strain on joints and muscles from prolonged desk work.
🏋️ Engage in regular physical exercise: Physical activity not only enhances concentration and memory retention but also helps in preventing headaches, back pain, and neck discomfort.

· HELLO SCAPHOID 👋 ·
Say hello to the scaphoid, that tiny wrist bone that can cause big problems! It's easily fractured from falls onto outstretched hands or direct impacts 🖐️
This injury is often seen in young adults, but it's less common in kids and the elderly.
Wondering if you have a scaphoid fracture? Look out for these symptoms:
☑️ Wrist pain
☑️ Weakness and tingling
☑️ Swelling and bruising
☑️ Skin discoloration
☑️ Difficulty moving your wrist or hand
Scaphoid fractures are notorious for their tricky healing process due to limited blood supply and frequent misdiagnosis. These complications can really slow down your recovery and impact wrist function 💁♂️
After six weeks in a splint or cast, physiotherapy can ease pain, reduce stiffness, strengthen muscles, and address secondary issues like shoulder pain or headaches, making it crucial for optimal recovery from a scaphoid fracture 👍

World MS Day, observed on May 30th, is a global awareness event dedicated to everyone impacted by multiple sclerosis (MS).
Living with multiple sclerosis (MS) can be challenging, as it affects individuals differently and there's no known cure. However, there are ways to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Physiotherapy is one such option, offering relief and support for those with MS 🙏
Physiotherapy aids in pain reduction by stretching and strengthening muscles, tackling joint and muscle-related discomfort head-on. It's not just about pain relief; physiotherapy also targets fatigue, a common and debilitating aspect of MS. By gradually increasing functional capacity, individuals can combat the overwhelming exhaustion that MS brings.
Balance and coordination issues are common with MS, but physiotherapy can make everyday tasks like walking and standing easier through tailored exercises focusing on core stability. Furthermore, by building strength and muscle mass, individuals can counteract the loss of muscle function often associated with MS, improving overall mobility 🚶♂️
In the journey to manage MS, physiotherapy stands as a vital component alongside medication and lifestyle adjustments. If you're living with MS, consider discussing the benefits of physiotherapy with your healthcare provider to see how it can complement your treatment plan and improve your quality of life ✨
