DONATION CALL OUT 🔔

We have an upcoming program on the 23rd-27th September, in Mutitjulu! The program is going to hold a fashion show where the kids will strut their stuff on the red carpet!

To make the fashion show possible, we are seeking donations of kids clothing...anything from t-shirts, pants, hats and shoes to long dresses and accessories. 👗🩴

If you have anything you would like to donate to the program, please send an email to [email protected].

Alongside the fashion show, the kids will be partaking in a range of healthy living activities. The activities will focus on physical and mental health as well as provide a space for kids to engage in their hobbies or interests.

The community of Mutitjulu requested a fashion show be a part of this program after gaining inspiration from Minjilang's program last year (pictured below).

We can't wait to share what we get up to!

Su***de Prevention Day 🌟🌏

Today is Su***de Prevention Day. It's all about raising awareness about the importance of reaching out for help and offering a hand to someone who might need it.

Today's a reminder that every single one of us matters, and there's always hope, even when things seem really dark.

It's important to remember that behind all those stats and news stories are real people. People with dreams, families, and yes, struggles too. Today is for them, for us, for everyone who’s had a rough go of it and needs a little light.💕

What can you do?

👫Start a conversation: the more we talk about it, the less overwhelming and scary it gets for everyone to ask for help when they need it.

🫶Reach out to someone: if you think someone is struggling, send them a message. A simple "Hey, how's it going?" can mean the world.

👂Listen: sometimes, what someone really needs is just to be heard. Listen without judging, just be there. Good communication is as much about listening as it is about talking.

❤️Encourage people to get help: getting help and addressing stresses and worries early is widely agreed to be the healthiest way to help prevent problems becoming more significant. Seeing a GP or speaking to a councillor can be a good first step.

Su***de Prevention Day isn’t just a date on the calendar – it’s a nudge for us all to look out for each other and spread a bit of kindness. Let’s make sure everyone knows they’re valued, and their stories are far from over.

These photos were taken 20 years apart in the beautiful community of Mutitjulu ❤️

The recent Storytelling/ Strong Young Women's Program was an opportunity for some of our Red Dust team to reconnect with community and reflect on the journey so far.

The song, named ‘Utulu Kutju’, is the embodiment of community in Utju, with the program's process unpacking ideas surrounding identity, relationships and connection to culture.

“On a visit with Red Dust to the remote community of Kintore, I (Andrew) was struck by the generosity of the elders in sharing their culture and their drive to support their younger generations. As one elder told me, “Red Dust is the one that cares, they visit and they stay”. We're delighted to make a bequest in our wills so that remote communities like Kintore will benefit through the good work of Red Dust.”

- Andrew O'Keeffe & Jude Tasker

If you're considering leaving a gift to Red Dust Role Models in your will, let us know and we'd love to chat to you about your intentions.

Today is Indigenous Literacy Day! ❤️ 💛🖤

Held annually on the first Wednesday in September, the day recognises and celebrates First Nations stories, cultures and languages.

To mark the occasion, we thought we would share the beautiful reading of Thomas Stevens’ book, ‘Wakalpayi Yirriṯi. Kuntilpayi Kuwarri’, read by Lorna Jackson. The book is a story on native Australian animals and traditional hunting.

The book Lorna is reading from has been illustrated with new drawings by the students at Walungurru School, on a Red Dust Healthy Living Program and has been read in Pintupi.

This project aimed to strengthen Pintupi language and pass down local stories.

When should I change my toothbrush? 🤔

To make sure our toothbrushes are best equipped for their daily 4 minute battle(2 minutes, twice a day), it’s an important question to consider!

The Australian Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush, whether manual or powered every three months or when when the bristles start to spread apart —whichever comes first. 🦷

Celebrating Connection and Culture in Minjilang

Mamaruni School students took the initiative to design and execute three murals that cover the school's art centre and library walls.

In creating the murals, the young artists of Minjilang were given the reins to steer their project. The students worked with local leaders and Elders to weave elements of culture, totems, languages, and symbols of their identity into the art piece in a significant yet respectful way.

Over the last three years, Red Dust has expanded programming in the Northern Territory's Top End.

Thanks to the generous support from the Insignia Community Foundation, our reach has extended into more remote communities, collaborating and building on relationships. Our expansion hasn’t just been geographical, it has celebrated and reinforced our commitment to local leadership and employment.

The IOOF Foundation will continue to support Red Dust through a new expansion program that focuses on building, supporting and sustaining a local Aboriginal workforce in remote communities and the urban hubs of Alice Springs and Darwin. Red Dust remains committed to nurturing and expanding these local employment opportunities and to developing programs that are sustainable within community. 🙌✨

Our recent music program in Utju was a collaborative effort shared between Elders and children.💛

During the week, we were fortunate enough to sit in on community choir practice at Areyonga School – a beautiful insight into how the women’s songs come together.

This year marks the 50 year anniversary for Yuendumu School and with that, we thought it would be a great opportunity to go down memory lane and share with you all some of the incredible music videos the community has made with us over the years. ❤️

Below is Yuendumu's 2018 music video - a dedication to Country and community. 🏜️

Here's a little behind the scenes of how a Red Dust mural comes to life. We start by putting our ideas on paper (or in this case on the Ipad!) and decide as a team, how we want the final piece to look!

The students at Mamaruni School created beautiful murals on the walls of the art room, brightening up the space. The murals act as an acknowledgement to the land, animals and Country that make up Minjilang. 🐢

Thank you Peppimenarti! 🌟

A non stop week of music with Junk Yard Beats.

Our young musicians discovered their own unique rhythms, transforming everyday items like buckets, pipes, and thongs into instruments.

To top it off, the kids used paint markers to bring a pop of colour to the pieces, making the instruments look as good as they sound.

Also...have you noticed the stunning mural in the background of one of the photos below? The art piece was created in our first program with Peppimenarti earlier this year!

This year, the Healthy Living Program has been supporting Areyonga School's 'Learning on Country' program with majority of the below music video being shot on Country whilst the kids are learning about land and culture.

The fantastic documentary, 'Like My Brother' premiered on Saturday at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

The film goes on the journey of four young women hailing from the Tiwi Islands - Rina, Freda, Juliana and Jess who seek to make it as professional athletes in the AFL Women's Essendon Football Club.

The film has successfully sold out two screenings and due to popular demand there is a third screening on the 24th August.

A massive congratulations goes to Freda Puruntatameri, Jessica Stassi and Arthurina Moreen, Sal Balharrie, Danielle MacLean, Tammy Abala, Shane Tipuamantamerri, TicTac Moore and Mushroom for creating such a beautiful documentary.

We are honoured to have supported the project and the opportunity for the women and their families to be in Melbourne for the premiere.

On a recent visit to Utju, we had the fun opportunity to work with the James Range Band and create a music video for their latest song, 'Kungka'. 🎶🎬

These young men play music that shares stories about family, culture and country, sang in Pitjantjatjara and English. They are working hard to inspire the young kids and keep their culture strong.

The band have been longstanding friendship with Red Dust and it's always pretty special when we get to collaborate with them.
