BE Aware! Did you know?šŸš¶šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļøšŸš¶šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø

The average person walks around 7500 steps per day, thatā€™s equivalent to around 5 laps of the Earths equator in a personā€™s lifetime!

Our feet support the entire body and carry us day-to-day. Therefore it is crucial we take the initiate to look after our feet and ankles and not ignore problems if they arise šŸ™Œ

If you or anyone you know are experiencing foot or ankle pain, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic at 9434 4422 or follow the link in our bio to book online!

BE Aware

Rehab is often up and down, very rarely is it linear.
This is because there are a number of factors such as the tissue that is injured eg tendon, ligament, muscle, bone etc.
Generally connective tissues such as tendons/ligaments take longer to heal.Likewise, depending what is going on in your life can affect healing eg stress, sleep, occupation etc
So if you are feeling like things are going slowly, donā€™t be impatient itā€™s a normal part of the process.

BE Podiatry is back in action for 2024 šŸƒā€ā™€ļø

Please see above our 2024 clinic times across our 3 locations.

We hope that all of our patients and referrers had a very Merry Christmas and enjoyed the New Year break.

We are refreshed and pumped to get stuck into a big 2024!!

BE Prepared for summer! ā˜€ļø

Commonly we find over the summer time we neglect the things weā€™ve worked hard on through the year such as: *Letting our heels become cracked and calloused
*Wearing flat soled shoes which cause pain through our feet
*Walk barefoot through public areas like showers or bathrooms while at the beach
These common occurrences can lead to issues during and after the summer that can take time to recover from so remember to stick to the things that work over the summer and keep you feet feeling happy healthy and comfortable!

22/12/2023

BE Merry

BE Comfortable

If you suffer from pain down the side of your nail there is likely onychophosis present. Onychophosis refers to the build up of callus and debris in the nail sulci. If you have a curved or involuted nail it is more likely to put pressure and cause this hard skin to develop. A podiatrist is skilled at removing onychophosis with specialised tools which can greatly alleviate pain.

If you have a sore toenail please give us a call on 9434 4422 or book online to have it assessed and treated.

18/12/2023

BE Creative with padding

Podiatristā€™s love being creative with different padding materialā€™s such as foam, felt and EVA to help offload and deflect pressure that is causing pain or discomfort. These pads can be tailored to the individual and are usually custom made. For example, we can create a deflective pad to offload a stubborn Corn, or a pad to offload the ball of your foot if you experience pain there.

BE Careful of your toes to avoid Retronychia!

This condition of the nail can be caused from tight footwear compressing the back of the nail or even trauma to the area causing thickness, inflammation and infection to instil.

Unfortunately with this type of nail often we find conservative management is necessary very early to find results but in most cases this nail pathology ends with the nail having to be removed to prevent further pain and infection from occurring.

If you feel like you or someone you know has nails that look like this please donā€™t hesitate to give us a call on 9434 4422.

26/11/2023

BE Foot Strong

The toe pro is a handy tool we use in clinic to measure and record toe strength. Foot muscles are frequently overlooked when managing conditions of the foot and ankle with reduced intrinsic muscle strength contributing to foot dysfunction, poor balance/stability and development of foot deformities.

If you are struggling with foot pain or feel like your feet are weak, stiff or tight a foot strengthening program would likely benefit you. Please give us a call on 9434 4422 or book online if you feel like you would benefit from a thorough biomechanical assessment with our team.

BE Corn free šŸŒ½

Corns are a localised growth of callous which can be extremely painful to touch and walk on. They will often resemble a small yellow lump of thickened skin and contain and small hard core. Corns form as a result of repetitive pressure or friction in a specific location of the foot. They commonly occur overlying bony prominences on the top and in between the toes as well as underneath the ball of the foot. They may also develop underneath the nail or in the nail sulci. They are often caused by a combination of narrow or ill-fitting footwear and foot and digital deformities such as bunions, clawed toes and hammer toes. Podiatrists are skilled at debriding overlying callous and enucleating the hard central core of the corn which will help to alleviate pain immediately. Offloading strategies such as orthoses, padding, toe props/sleeves can also be used to reduce pressure to help prevent corns from developing or slow down their rate of return. If you suspect you have a corn book in to have it removed by one of our podiatrists today.

BE Aware - You donā€™t need to be in pain or have an injury to see a podiatrist

Podiatrists have a large scope of practice which helps to keep people healthy and active. Although a large part of podiatry relates to managing and treating foot pain our role as a podiatrist also includes educating, assessing and preventing issues from arising in the feet. A podiatrist can help with many different issues such as general skin and nail care, diabetes foot assessments, childrenā€™s feet and footwear advice.

If you are interested in having a foot health assessment to ensure your feet stay happy and healthy give us a call or book in online.

BE Summer Ready with Kerryflex!

Kerryflex is a useful treatment to help your nails look summer ready! Kerrylfex is a resin that we use to help cover the nails in order to create a ā€˜normalā€™ nail that can last from 3-6 weeks depending on care.
Kerryflex is quick to apply and as a cosmetic treatment is something we often use when looking to achieve a clean nail look, perfect for events!

19/10/2023

Be ready for Sweaty Feet!
Sweaty feet, what can we do?
Having sweaty feet can cause all sorts of issues from blisters, fungal infections etc.
For sweaty feet, try more breathable socks. Instead of cotton, try nylon/bamboo. These socks generally have moisture wicking fibres.
You may also like to try antiperspirant creams, deodorants and powders to dry your feet out.
Likewise, good hygiene is always important and ensuring you air your feet out on a regular basis.

16/10/2023

BE STRONG with the Fasciitis Fighter!
When rehabbing from heel pain, a handy tool that we use is called the fasciitis fighter. This small rubber device allows you to perform a calf raise which makes the exercise target the plantar fascia as opposed to a regular calf raise.
This does this by bending the toes back and winding up the plantar fascia. This device is based off a well known study which improved pain through calf raises on a rolled up towel. However, in our opinion the fasciitis fighter is much better.
They are available to purchase in the clinic if you are looking for something slightly more specific for plantar fasciitis!

BE Educated about running shoe features! šŸ‘Ÿ

Running shoes are designed to provide comfort, support, and protection for runners. Some of the most important features of running shoes include:

- Cushioning: Cushioning helps to absorb shock and protect the joints from impact. It is especially important for runners who run on hard surfaces.
- Strong fixation: Laces, velcro or buckles on top of the shoe is designed to hold the foot in place and provides extra support.
- Stable midsole: a stable midsole helps to control the midfoot area. This prevents flexibility within the shoe.
- Stable Heel counter: Having a strong heel counter means the heel is supported and not sliding out of the shoe.
- Width: The width of the shoe should be wide enough to accommodate the natural width of your foot. A too-narrow shoe can cause pain, blisters and corns.

When choosing running shoes, it is important to consider your running style, the surface you will be running on, and your budget. It is also important to try on a variety of shoes and walk or run in them before making a purchase.

03/10/2023

BE Supported!

Podiatrists are highly skilled at different taping techniques to help manage foot and ankle pathologies. Taping is an extremely effective and underrated treatment that can have an immediate effect and help reduce pain. Taping can be used for a variety of reasons which may include providing support and proprioceptive feedback, increasing stability and function as well as manipulating foot biomechanics. Podiatrists may use different types of tape such as rigid tape, K-tape and fixation tape depending on the desired outcome. If taping produces a positive outcome your podiatrist will likely be able implement a longer lasting solution through padding, wedging or a flexible insert to help keep you healthy and active long term.

02/10/2023

BE Speedy with your steps!

Running cadence refers to how many steps you take in a minute during your runs.
We often play around with running cadence when we want to adjust some running related factors for example: decreasing stride length by increasing running cadence to reduce over striding if this may be causing some pain or discomfort.
If you have been upping your running and aren't sure if your cadence may be affecting your ability to progress then don't hesitate to give us a call on 9434 4422 or book an appointment with our podiatrists today.

BE Efficient!

Running technique has been a battle ground for debate amongst athletes and practitioners over the past decade. While the topical nature of run technique has inspired fascinating arguments, it can often leave significant confusion for those wanting a clearer understanding of what's best for them!

One of the simplest ways to look at running is from the perspective that we're never taught how to run in the first place. Our brain and bodies have learned to adapt and problem solve to what is most natural to how we function. As a result, if we try to completely overhaul running technique, it can be a long and arduous process that may not result in any significant improvements in performance or reduced injury risk.

Therefore, when we look at run technique, our focus is on improving efficiency through strength work, drills or run specific movements. Improved running efficiency can help performance, injury management and have a positive impact on technique.

So, if you what to delve into running technique and performance, pop into the clinic and have a chat!

20/09/2023

BE Different!

Different running surfaces are not only a great way to make your training more enjoyable, it's a smart way to prevent injuries. Most running injuries are related to overuse. By implementing a change in surface, you are changing the forces underneath you foot, changing the position it lands in and continue to run with less speed bumps on your running journey. So if your training has been stale or you have a few niggles, try to go to an oval or trail instead of the pavement!

BE Mobilised šŸš¶ā€ā™€ļø

Foot Mobilisation Therapy (FMT) is a manual therapy which aims to improve foot function. Specific techniques are used to target stiff or restricted joints in the foot and ankle. FMT works by releasing tight connective tissues which can interfere with how our joints move and function. When combined with strengthening exercises FMT is a very useful tool to help reduce pain and improve mobility.
