Today is International Lifeguard Appreciation Day.

Lifeguards are the heroes of our beaches, rivers, lakes, water parks, and swimming pools, watching over us, and proactively preventing accidents and supporting safety and fun.

Lifeguards play a crucial role in accident prevention by completing preventative actions, understanding safety rules, monitoring conditions, and providing response to emergencies. Their skills include rescuing swimmers in distress, performing CPR, and managing potential hazards to ensure the safety of all visitors.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional injury and death worldwide and a leading cause of death for children, so it is hard to overestimate the importance of lifeguards who contribute significantly to drowning prevention.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to all the lifeguards who work tirelessly to keep us safe every day. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

If you know a lifeguard, make sure you show your appreciation today!

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK • This week we kick off National Volunteer Week 2024, recognising the diverse passions and talents of the people in the business of volunteering. 🤝

This year’s theme is ‘Something for Everyone’ and if there’s anything volunteering in lifesaving is, it’s diverse!

There is over 43,000 members supporting their lifesaving clubs around Australia. More than 6,000 volunteer lifesavers and lifeguards protect our beaches each year but there are so many other volunteering roles we rely on.

It’s the parents supporting our Nippers and development camps, the officials refereeing and coordinating lifesaving sport, the university students and professionals that offer their learned skillsets to educate peers, the Rescue Crew covering the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopters and educating school kids in water safety messaging and the locals cooking the snags at our fundraisers.

The vast skills and expertise of our volunteers are a credit to the impact they have in our community.

THANK YOU to all the volunteers that make lifesaving so vibrant and transformative.

Thanks for your patience while we waited for water quality results to determine the impact of a sewer spill in the area.

We’re sorry for any inconvenience this event may have caused your organisation over the last few days.

Original post: Monday 12 February (PM)

We’ve had a sewer spill into Tanti Creek on Monday 12 February (PM) with overflow reaching Mills Beach, .

The spill was unfortunately caused by a failed sewer pipe connected to one of our pump stations in the area. Our crews are on site and responding.

We’re sorry for the mess, any potential smells and the closure of Mills Beach.

We’ll continue working to contain the spill and will monitor the area to reduce any impacts on the environment.

As a precaution, we’re asking you (and your animals) not to use or handle the water in Tanti Creek and Mills Beach, Mornington.

Advisory signs are in place until we receive water quality results for the area.

We’ve also let the Environment Protection Authority Victoria know about the spill.

A DAY ON PATROL • Is always fun when your friends are on as well ❤️💛

25/01/2024

Be Safe this Long Weekend.
Download the Beach Safe App for details on patrolled beaches over the long weekend.

Mills Beach will be patrolled Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 11.45am to 6pm.

While temperatures might be mild heading into the long weekend, it’s important not to be complacent while enjoying our beautiful waterways.

Recent tragic drownings are a timely reminder to know and stick to your limits in the water.

Go to a patrolled location and swim between the red and yellow flags.

🚩 Assess conditions before entering the water
🚩Actively supervise children,
🚩Wear life jackets when boating or fishing
🚩Postpone alcohol consumption until after water-related activities

By making informed choices, we can all contribute to a more enjoyable public holiday long weekend and arrive home safely.

AUSTRALIAN POOL LIFESAVING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024 • A MASSIVE good luck to Massimo & Seb Lancia and Oscar & Milla Skehan for this weekends Pool Lifesaving Championships 🏊🏻‍♀️🏊🏼‍♂️🏊🏼‍♂️🏊🏼‍♂️💚🤍
Conducted in various forms since 1965, the inaugural Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships (APLSC) were held in 1987 in Alice Springs and remain a highlight of the Australian lifesaving sport calendar, rotating to a new State or Territory each year.

The 2024 Championships will be hosted at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre from Thursday 18th January to Saturday 20th January 2024.

The APLSC brings athletes, teams, volunteers and staff together from across Australia for three days of competition both in the water (speed events) and out of water (initiative tests and CPR). While many compete for Championship titles, the APLSC also provide a unique opportunity for our Royal Life Saving members to come together in celebrating their extensive contributions to the lifesaving movement and friendships made along the way.

Individuals and teams vie for prestigious Championship trophies from Under 14 to Masters divisions, with each trophy named after a pivotal member of Royal Life Saving (UK and Australia) who helped support and teach others the importance of rescue skills that we still practice today.
From first-time pool lifesavers to lifeguards, from ‘clubbies’ to the Australian Lifesaving Team, the APLSC draws lifesavers from across Australia.
To participate in the Australian Pool Lifesaving Championships, competitors must hold a Bronze Star (15 years and under), Bronze Medallion or equivalent lifesaving award (Surf Rescue Certificate, Surf Bronze) and be a current financial member of Royal Life Saving or Surf Life Saving Australia.
