After nearly two decades in foster placements as a child, Isaiah Dawe is doing everything he can to change the lives of young Aboriginal people in out-of-home care in Sydney. A proud Butchulla and Gawara saltwater man, Isaiah was taken into Australia’s child-protection system as a baby and placed with 17 different foster families until he was 18. He endured racism and physical and emotional abuse and, apart from his sister, had no connection with family, culture or his land.
In 2019 he founded ID. Know Yourself, an Aboriginal-led, Redfern-based not-for-profit mentoring program supporting Aboriginal children aged five to 19 in out-of-home care. “We provide a platform that creates love, hope and belonging so these kids can live fulfilling lives,” says Isaiah. “Hope gives them strength and courage and the sense there is a better future ahead of them.” Approximately 20,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are in out-of-home care in Australia, and Isaiah aims to build a national program helping everyone. “Family is the most important thing, but, for our kids, they've been taken from that relationship,” says Isaiah. “At ID. Know Yourself they've got their chosen family, they feel empowered and healed because of the people they have around them. That’s the difference we're seeing in the kids' lives.” This week marks the start of National Reconciliation Week - a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation.
