OPTUS IN COURT | ACCC - "Many of the impacted consumers were First Nations Australians from regional and remote areas or people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds."
We’ve commenced proceedings in the Federal Court alleging that Optus engaged in unconscionable conduct in contravention of the Australian Consumer Law when selling telecommunications goods and services to hundreds of consumers, that they often did not want or need, and could not afford, and in some cases then pursuing consumers for debts resulting from these sales.
Our case involves allegations that Optus acted unconscionably in its dealings with about 429 consumers. Many of these consumers were experiencing vulnerability and/or disadvantage.

3G will be switched off forever on Monday, 28 October.
We’ve discovered that some online retailers in Australia are today STILL selling outdated phones that soon won’t function on Australia’s 4G and 5G networks after that date.
Consumers can check whether their existing mobile phones will be impacted by texting ‘3’ to the number ‘3498’.
We've already received complaints from seven consumers who spent a total of $4,646 purchasing imported refurbished devices from online Australian retailers as recently as two months ago that will become unusable after the 3G network closure.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection Trish Blake anticipated more complaints could follow once consumers discover their devices no longer work.

As a tenant, you may have been asked to use a third party service to pay your rent, but did you know this means you might not be protected by WA law should something happen to the real estate agent’s business?
The same goes for landlords who may be receiving payments from their real estate agent via a third party payment platform.

Just when we think scammers can't go any lower...
The National Anti-Scam Centre is warning that criminals are impersonating charities and offering fake financial assistance schemes.
They also fake emergency relief services, rental assistance, and programs.
The aim of these scams is to steal money and often personal information which is valuable to criminals to help them perpetrate other crimes. With information such as myGov usernames and passwords, bank account details, or driver licences or passports they can assume false identities and commit other crimes with less opportunity for detection.

A pair of car sellers who rolled back the odometers on two vehicles by more than 200,000 kilometres each have been convicted and fined a total of $51,000 by the Joondalup Magistrates Court.
"Odometer tampering is a dangerous practice that puts the community at risk while lining the pockets of those who engage in it at the expense of consumers they are ripping off," said Commissioner for Consumer Protection Trish Blake.
A Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) check can reveal whether a car has been stolen, has money owing on it or has been a repairable write-off, and sometimes may include an odometer reading check so you can cross check - it only costs $2 from ppsr.gov.au

🚨Public warning - Light-up shoe charms and accessories
Our friends at Consumer Affairs Victoria have issued an urgent public warning about light-up shoe charms and accessories that contain button batteries.
Button batteries pose a serious health risk to children and other vulnerable people who may ingest them. They can burn through the oesophagus (swallowing tube) in just two hours, causing internal burns, severe bleeding or death.
⬇️See the post below to check if your shoe accessories are affected.⬇️
Our Director is warning consumers to be aware of potentially dangerous button batteries contained in light-up charms which attach to children’s shoes.
Our inspectors have seized examples of the products which don’t have the batteries sufficiently secured, and lack the required warning information.
Button batteries can injure or kill, especially children and other vulnerable people who may ingest them.
