The School of Indigenous Studies at UWA aims to achieve excellence and equity in all aspects of high
We provide a number of offerings, from pathway and diploma courses for Indigenous students, to undergraduate and Master degrees offered to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. Certain undergraduate units may be taken as broadening or elective units. All undergraduate students are able to enrol in two majors as a part of their degree. They can choose either the major in Indigenous Knowledge

UWA 14-week Aboriginal Orientation Course 2024/2025 β Applications Open!
The Aboriginal Orientation Course is a free, full-time 14-week course that prepares Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students for entry into most undergraduate degree courses at UWA.
Regardless of your age, background, or past educational experiences, we strongly advise mob to get in touch with us to plan your path into university. Our 14-week enabling course is taught at Bilya Marlee, the home of the School of Indigenous Studies at UWA, and is an opportunity for students to develop the essential study skills for undergraduate studies and the journey of life-long learning.
Applications are now open for the Semester II 2024 and Semester I 2025 courses.

Are you passionate about education and empowering others? Do you value cultural understanding and supporting success? If so, we invite you to consider becoming a tutor with the Indigenous Tutorial Access Scheme (ITAS) at the University of Western Australia.
ITAS tutors play a vital role in supporting the academic journey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students at UWA. You'll provide one-on-one tutorials in a range of subjects, helping students develop their academic skills, confidence, and understanding. As a tutor, you'll become a trusted mentor and build positive relationships, fostering cultural connections and creating a sense of belonging within the university community.
ITAS Tutors are paid a casual rate of $55 or $60 per hour, depending on your academic background.

Earlier this month, a number of UWA School of Indigenous Studies staff were acknowledged through the Vice Chancellor's Research Awards.
Erica Spry, a proud Bardi Jawi woman, was awarded the Vice Chancellor's Award for Indigenous-led Research Award. Erica has contributed to collaborative regional and state-wide diabetes and child/maternal health projects. She advocates for improving screening for blood glucose in pregnancy and reducing adverse birth outcomes and is passionate about improving health for all. Well done Erica!
The Vice Chancellor's Award for Collaborative Indigenous Research Partnerships was also announced, with a number of notable UWA School of Indigenous Studies academics being recognised for their impact in the medical and dental professions. Winners include Kate Smith (School of Indigenous Studies), Dr Dawn Bessarab (Medical School), Dr Zoe Hyde (Medical School), Alex Lalovic (School of Indigenous Studies), Dr Elise Alexander (School of Indigenous Studies), Dr Athira Rohit (School of Indigenous Studies), Glennette Dowden (School of Indigenous Studies), Lyn Yappo (School of Indigenous Studies), and Christianne White (School of Indigenous Studies).

Our flagship Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Scholarship is valued at over $50,000 per annum and is available to all eligible Indigenous students enrolled in an MPhil or PhD program at the University of Western Australia.
Both the Master's and PhD programs are designed for students to undertake research in an area that they are passionate about. With guidance from world-class experts in the field, students are supported at every step of their research journey.
The School of Indigenous Studies also provides dedicated support to Indigenous Higher Degree Research Students at the University of Western Australia. Some of these include:
- 24/7 access to study spaces at Bilya Marlee (the home of the School of Indigenous Studies)
- Tailored support provided by the Indigenous Higher Degree Research Coordinator

Do you know any Year 8 teachers who would want to provide their Indigenous students with a taste of university?
Through the Year 8 Discovery Day, students will have a one-day experience to introduce students to the university environment through a diverse range of hands-on activities at different departments on campus. This could include testing someone's athletic ability like an AFL talent scout, applying plaster to a forearm like a doctor, or working out what minerals are used to make a car like a geologist.

A huge congratulations to all of our current UWA School of Indigenous Studies students who competed at the Indigenous Nationals at Monash University last week.
After some highly contested battles against the other 33 Australian Universities, the Western Waagyls finished in 6th place, making it to the quarter-finals in Basketball and Touch, as well as the semi-finals in Volleyball.
Kyiah OβDonohue, who is currently studying a Bachelor of Science (Sport Science and Exercise and Health) won MVP for Basketball after exhibiting phenomenal athletic and leadership skills on the court.
A huge shout-out to current student Kahlie Lockyer - Aboriginal Artist who designed The University of Western Australia Indigenous Nationals uniforms for 2023.

A huge achievement by School of Indigenous Studies student Robert Hansen Jr who has signed a contract with North Melbourne in the mid-season draft!
Robert was completing the Orientation Course at the School of Indigenous Studies when he was selected by North Melbourne as pick No.2 in the mid-season draft.

Current School of Indigenous Studies student Shahnaz Rind recently visited The University of Melbourne for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Eye Health Conference.
Shahnaz is currently completing her Doctor of Optometry at The University of Western Australia and her work was recently published in the book 'Minum Barreng: The Story of the Indigenous Eye Health Unit' alongside a number of phenomenal Indigenous academics, scientists and community leaders.
We are all very proud of Shahnaz's achievements so far and are looking forward to the impact she has on her communities in the future!

In collaboration with our friends at we always aim to make sure that we book in time to visit schools outside of the Perth region. Many of our students travel away from home to pursue their studies, so it is very important to us to keep the connection with these regions to support more students wanting to study at The University of Western Australia.
Our team has been running a number of aspirational activities with the students, providing them with an insight into our personal journeys to university and letting them know the wide range of pathways available at The University of Western Australia.
