Last week’s Mineral Auction was a sparkling success! With over 200 mineral samples auctioned, we raised over $4000 for the Edward De Courcy Clarke Earth Science Museum. 🌍💎 We hope everyone is thrilled with their new additions to their collections! The night ended on a high note with a live auction featuring six incredible samples. Huge thank you to the executive committee, namely Dion Edelsten and Mikaela Tannert, for spending many sleepless nights to ensure the event ran smoothly. Every bid helps preserve earth science history and education. Swipe through for highlights from the night!

This rock contains a high amount of red garnet crystals (0.5-2mm).

Garnet is produced when sedimentary rocks rich in aluminium, like shale, travel deep into the earth on a subducting plate (metamorphism). The very high heat and pressure in these conductions break the chemical bonds in the rocks, prompting minerals to undergo recrystallization.

Australia produces almost half of the world garnets with the largest garnet mine being discovered in Port Gregory, Western Australia during the late 1970s. This is currently the largest source of industrial garnet in the world.

Pictured is the incredibly unique rock - a selenite gypsum, also known as the Desert Rose. These evaporites form through crystal formation, resulting from the inflow of water containing dissolved calcium sulfate, balanced by an outflow of water due to evaporation. Such minerals serve as indicators of arid climates during their formation period.
