The first was Finland's Oskar Wetzell, who competed as a diver in the 1908 and 1912 games held in London, England. While he didn't bring home a medal, Oskar won an impressive eight Finish national championships in diving and was a founding member of the Finnish Deaf Sports Federation.

Bone conduction is not only used to treat hearing loss. This technology plays a fundamental role in military communication. Soldiers need to communicate in a safe way, both in presence of high levels of background noise and in quiet environments. That’s why they often use bone conduction headsets, usually integrated into their helmets, to receive military commands. In this way – with open-ears headsets – soldiers are aware of important sounds around them!

Scuba divers use bone conduction technology to communicate underwater. To ease underwater communication, divers can clip special, wireless bone conduction devices to their masks. These devices pick up what the diver is saying and transmits their voice via ultrasound through the water.

Do you know how hearing works?

Through the ear canal, sound vibrations go into the middle ear, vibrate the eardrum and the three ossicles that connect it to the inner ear and, eventually, reach the cochlea – the snail-shaped part of the inner ear. With the help of hair cells, the cochlea converts sound vibrations into electrical impulses, which are sent through the auditory nerve to the brain, allowing us to hear.

But this is not the way hearing works for everybody. Sound vibrations can also reach the cochlea via the bones of the skull, by using the natural sound conducting properties of bones. And this is called bone conduction. This process is used in bone anchored hearing devices, as the device sends vibrations directly to the cochlea, bypassing problems in the outer or middle ear.

Animal Hearing Fact 4: Bees communicate through vibrations... by shaking their bodies!

It’s one of their natural, simple and effective methods of communication. Every time honeybees want to send a message across the hive, they simply shake their bodies for a few seconds and send the vibrations. And then other bees are encouraged to work harder and become more productive in the different daily activities.

At the Expo 2015 in Milan, at the United Kingdom pavilion, visitors had the chance to experience bees’ dancing and shaking through a bone conduction device. By using a small stick and placing one end into the device and biting the other end, bees’ vibrations were transmitted directly to the visitors’ inner ear.
