We had a fantastic day at GTK Brisbane with Roseanna Tegel (Permobil) diving deep into two of Permobil’s Blue Pathway courses!

We explored the crucial differences between custom configured and custom-built frames and how these impact functional mobility, ADL participation, and posture. Attendees got hands-on experience with various setups, understanding the biomechanics of the user and the importance of an individualised fit. We also delved into the world of power assist devices, exploring how these devices can enhance independence. Through case studies and practical sessions, participants learned about the installation, benefits, and clinical reasoning behind choosing the right power assist for each individual.

Car travel can be an exhilarating experience, granting us the freedom to explore and engage with our community and beyond! However, it is essential for children with disabilities and their families to have the appropriate equipment to ensure safe access to vehicle transportation. Interestingly, many families prefer to receive transport information from their Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist, but surprisingly, up to 70% of families have never received any information on this topic. That's why it is crucial for Allied Health Practitioners to learn and support these children and families in this critical aspect of their lives.

This workshop will outline the necessary considerations when working with children and their families in the area of transport. We will explore how to establish a safe transport plan, including what needs to be involved in one, in order to ensure children are well supported for travel and community access. This Rifton Pacer gait trainer is almost ready for delivery. This week in Brisbane, Ed Milner (Medifab), our own Kate Pain and the GTK Brisbane team presented our Advanced Seating Assessment and Prescription two day workshop. During the workshop, we covered the seating assessment process, MAT evaluations, assessing biomechanics, translating assessment findings into product needs, using clinical reasoning for seating prescriptions, going through complex case studies to expand our knowledge and getting hands on with tools to set up seating systems and make adjustments. Sometimes people think that the larger wheelchairs must be the hardest to work with, but it's usually the smallest chairs that present the most challenges. There's just not that much real estate available on the frame for mounting things like hip belts and other postural supports. Which is why we're so thrilled that our team has been able to mount the Todo power assist device on this paediatric Ki Mobility Little Wave Clik manual wheelchair.

The Todo and the Clik work so well together, as the dynamic 5th wheel on the Clik helps keep the chair stable and stop it tipping back when the power assist is in use as it's always in contact with the ground. Without the 5th wheel, we'd have to move the axle back to achieve stability which would affect the user's position and ability to propel the wheelchair. The Todo will help this wheelchair user to get around all areas of their home, community and school easily and confidently.
